A simple and practical method of planimetry of the real-time sonographic unit was used to evaluate the fasting gallbladder size and its contractility. The results were compared to analyse the correlation between sex, age, height and weight. Forty-six healthy subjects entered this study, including 27 males (aged22-32 years) and 19 females (aged 19-36 years). After overnight fasting, the gallbladder area was 11.4±0.6 cm^2 in males and 9.0±0.6 cm^2 in females (P<0.05). There were no correlation between the area and age, height or weight. The gallbladder size decreased 34.1±1.8% at 30 minutes and 47.4±2.2% at 45 minutes postprandially; there was no significant difference between males and females. Gallbladder contractility appeared to be independent of the fasting gallbladder size and the height or weight of the subject.

A high incidence (64%) of muscle cramps was found in 112 cirrhotic patients, as compared with 17% in 169 hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) negative healthy persons, 8% in 13 asymptomatic HBsAg carriers, 8% in 12 patients with acute hepatitis, and 28% in 25 patients with chronic hepatitis. The cramps were characterized by severe pain with more than one episode per week which occurred mainly during sleep in the lower extremities and lasted for few minutes. Besides the use of diuretics and the presence of peripheral edema, no definite etiologic factors could be found. The underlying pathophysiology of muscle cramps in patients with chronic liver disease remains obscure. However, the strikingly high incidence of muscle cramps could be recognized as a symptom of cirrhosis.
