EDITOR'S SUMMARY

In an interview with the special section guest editors, Ronald L. Larsen, dean of the University of Pittsburgh's School of Information Sciences and chair of the iCaucus, discussed the origins and goals of the iSchool movement, starting in 2005. Larsen explained key differences from traditional information science programs as institutional interest and doctoral programs that reflect intense academic research, paired with core values and expertise to support evolving demands in an increasingly digital world. Criteria for recognition as an iSchool or school of information include expertise or a solid foundation in all forms of information, its use and users and information technology applications. Multidisciplinarity is a strong attraction for many faculty and students. As of early 2016, 65 iSchools existed, over half being outside North America. The iSchools consortium sponsors annual iConferences and has been formalized as a corporate entity dedicated to global recognition, educating information professionals and exploring the effects of information and information technologies.

The 16th Annual IA Summit and the 7th Annual RDAP Summit are resting on the May horizon, ready to bring together their respective communities of practitioners, researchers, teachers and students for a look at the latest news from their fields. Each group meets in Atlanta beginning on May 4 at the Omni Atlanta Hotel at CNN Center.

The 16th IA Summit will focus on digital spaces that are becoming ever-more interactive and less page-based. Cross-channel, data-dependent, multi-platform, context-aware content has become the norm. New technologies like internet of things devices and voice-driven gadgets continue to capture our imagination and fuel innovation across industries. In this environment, the intentional design of information environments for findability, understanding and adaptability has never been more important.

Today, everyone who contributes to the creation of these spaces needs to understand information architecture. Information architects are part of an ever-growing landscape of roles responsible for structuring information spaces. As technology evolves, so must the practice of information architecture.

The 2016 IA Summit will gather a diverse collection of voices from within the discipline and beyond to address the continued evolution of IA practices. With material appropriate for all levels and running the gamut from the theoretical to the immediately practical, the 2016 IA Summit will truly showcase a broader panorama.

Following two days of optional pre-conference workshops, the full three-day schedule will begin on Friday, May 6, and continue through Sunday, May 8.

For full details on the 16th Annual IA Summit, please visit the website at www.iasummit.org/about.

The RDAP16 Summit caters to the interests and needs of data managers and curators, librarians who work with research data, and researchers and data scientists. Practitioners and researchers from academic institutions, data centers, funding agencies and industry will attend the Summit. They represent a wide range of disciplines from the life sciences, physical sciences, social sciences and humanities.

Among the panel session titles in the two-day main program, May 4–5, are Engaging Liaisons, Sustainability, Building the Research Data Community of Practice and How Are We Defining Success? In addition to panel sessions, attendees will enjoy poster sessions, lightning talks, roundtable discussions and numerous networking opportunities during social events.

RDAP16 will close with a two-day Data Carpentry Workshop on May 6 and 7, for which separate registration is required.

For。

EDITOR'S SUMMARY

The journey of the University of Zadar's Department of Information Sciences to iSchool recognition reflects the challenging requirements for an academic institution to attain that status. The department was accredited in 2014, with undergraduate and graduate programs evolving from the Department of Librarianship, accredited since 2005. The department co-publishes a scientific journal, organizes professional conferences, operates a joint graduate program with other universities, promotes active involvement in international professional organizations and encourages collaboration with universities around the world to promote student exchange studies. Admission requirements, curricula and professional competencies follow recommendations for all levels of study, with special focus at the doctoral level on supporting Croatia's written heritage. Having demonstrated institutional dedication to the field of information sciences and support of robust academic study, the department's sole remaining obstacle for full recognition as an iSchool is stable research funding.

Strategic Planning for Research Data Services
Pub Date : 2016-05-05 DOI: 10.1002/bul2.2016.1720420411

EDITOR'S SUMMARY

Libraries are increasingly being asked to provide data management support of various types. Without a single approach or standard, each institution must devise a strategic plan for data management support in terms of local requirements. A strategic plan helps to align available skills and services with the needs of users and to build critical support. Planning must start with research on user needs and any pertinent unique local information. Based on an explicit need, the plan should specify a vision for data services using identified resources for a specified time period. A strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis can help to identify internal and external factors to be considered. Actionable and reasonable goals should be formulated and outlined. The strategic plan should encourage stakeholders to work in concert, include outcome metrics and be updated every few years.

EDITOR'S SUMMARY

The Asia-Pacific iSchool regional chapter, initiated in 2014, consists of nine of the 11 iSchools across Australia, China, Japan, Korea and Singapore. The curricula and research areas of the iSchools in the region vary widely. Sungkyunkwan University in Korea offers a general B.A. in library and information science and a more technical B.S. in data science, as well as master's and doctoral programs geared to research. Other schools in the chapter offer programs ranging from publishing and e-commerce to software engineering and information systems. The vibrant young chapter is working creatively on mutual support, outreach and funding. Member schools agree on a number of agenda items to strengthen the chapter, but, without a shared body for collaborative work, most maintain stronger partnerships with institutions in Europe and North America.

Nadia Caidi 2016 ASIS&T President, Associate Professor

EDITOR'S SUMMARY

Building connections between ASIS&T and other information-oriented organizations is progressing through collaborations with the Society for the Social Studies of Science (4S), the Council of Scientific Society Presidents (CSSP) and the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE). With data management a critical issue for scientific societies, the CSSP will focus its spring meeting in May 2016 on theoretical and practical issues around data, having ASIS&T and 4S jointly present the opening session. ASIS&T president Nadia Caidi serves on the CSSP executive board and co-chairs its scholarly publications and data committee. ASIS&T ties with ALISE are growing stronger through their joint hosting of a Presidential Session on Accreditation at the ASIS&T Annual Meeting in Copenhagen in October 2016. That meeting will also feature sessions on diversity and inclusion and opportunities to meet journal editors and to hear keynote speakers exploring bridges between industry and research. Other upcoming meetings include the ASIS&T Regional (East Coast) Meeting and ASIS&T Taipei Chapter workshop, both in April 2016.

EDITOR'S SUMMARY

Started in the late 1990s by deans of three library schools in the United States, the iSchool movement has grown to include 16 European institutions. The expansion required revision of the original North American model, assumptions about academic positions and funding. Among the European schools, some differences exist in curricular focus, though funding needs may reinforce subject area overlap. As an example, the Berlin School of Library and Information Science offers multiple programs at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels, with varying curricula focusing on practical librarianship, computer emphasis or extended research. The curricula at other European iSchools, their research pursuits and employment opportunities for bachelor's and master's program graduates vary widely. Most attaining a doctorate degree go into management since academic positions are limited. European iSchools collaborate through planning, exchange programs and a shared doctoral colloquium, and funding sources reward cooperative institutional efforts and geographic diversity.

One of the highlights of each year's ASIS&T Annual Meeting is the presentation of the prestigious ASIS&T Annual Awards.

Michael E.D. Koenig, professor at Long Island University, is the 2015 recipient of the ASIS&T Award of Merit, the highest honor presented by ASIS&T. The award goes to an individual who has made a noteworthy contribution to the field of information science, including the expression of new ideas, the creation of new devices, the development of better techniques and outstanding service to the profession. The jury noted enthusiastically how fully and successfully Mike fits all the criteria outlined for this prestigious award.

Mike's breadth of experience in educational, social and political processes has affected many facets of the information science profession. His experience is in the academic, international, technical, commercial and theoretical realms of the profession. Few people have touched as many lives or mentored as many people as has Mike. In his gentle and unassuming way he has made the profession a better place to practice. He has bridged the cultural gap between distinct areas of computer and information, between commercial and academic sectors. He has proven that the theories he has taught can work in the real world. His productivity in the field is impressive. He represents the best in information science research, teaching and practice.

For these reasons and more, Michael E.D. Koenig receives the 2015 Award of Merit.

ASIS&T's Watson Davis Award recognizes the contributions of someone who has shown continuous dedicated service to the ASIS&T membership through active participation in and support of programs, chapters, SIGs, committees and publications. In 2015, the person who most effectively lives up to that ideal is Michael Leach.

During his 20 years of active service to ASIS&T, Michael has led student chapter activities at Simmons College and regional chapter activities in the New England Chapter; he has served on committees and juries at the local and national levels; and he has demonstrated association-wide leadership working on strategic plans for ASIS&T and serving as ASIS&T president. Currently, Michael is Chapter Assembly director; member of both the leadership and membership committees; and leader of the Strategic Planning Task Force.

In his many roles, Michael's service to ASIS&T has been selfless, consistent and effective. He has assumed diverse leadership responsibilities and consistently done them well, providing the voice of the information professional while including other views.

For these and many other reasons, Michael Leach is the honorable and worthy recipient of the 2015 Watson Davis Award.

The 2015 Thomson Reuters Outstanding Information Science Teacher Award goes to Denise Agosto, Drexel University. Dr. Agosto has an impressive record of teaching excellence. She has received a

Karen a . 2015年最佳JASIST论文奖授予Frans van der Sluis, Egon L. van den Broek, Richard J. Glassey, Elisabeth M. A. G. van Dijk和Franciska M. G. de Jong,他们的论文“当复杂性变得有趣”(第65卷,第7期)。
