Freudenberg Sealing Technologies has developed a way of reliably sealing busbars – a system of electrical conductors used in electric vehicles (EVs) for collecting and distributing current. The impermeable rectangular busbar over-mould creates a reliable seal and helps prevent damage to the vehicle’s sensitive power electronics. It also reduces the complexity of production processes by combining the busbars, seal and guide in a single, complete package that is ready for installation on the assembly line.

As consumers expect ever more sophisticated assistance systems and increasingly depend on cameras and sensors in the context of autonomous driving, the performance and reliability of these components have become critical to road users’ safety and comfort. To seal electronic products, manufacturers have traditionally used preformed, moulded or pre-punched gaskets, or the installation of elastomeric strip profiles or self-adhesive foams – all of which have clear downsides. Liquid gasketing approaches overcome these drawbacks by offering reduced tooling and inventory costs, easily accommodating component design changes and part variation to provide more design flexibility.
