Trauma, Multimodal Mental Imagery and Intermediality in Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things 阿兰达蒂·罗伊《小事物之神》中的创伤、多模态心理意象与中介性

Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things has been effectively described by N. Rokotnitz as a narrative that accesses and arouses sensory modes of reception and perception, infiltrating reader’s preconscious and subconscious levels of understanding and thus enhancing the vividness of immersion in a text that ultimately renders its moral code physically tangible. This use of multimodal mental imagery, which per se vouches for a transmedia understanding of narrative as a “multimedia construct” (Ryan 2004), is an integral part of a literary representation of trauma that also integrates explicit reference to other media, namely cinema and traditional dance performance. The essay addresses the role of these media within the socio-cultural frame of Roy’s novel and interrogates their function in shaping the literary narrative of trauma and healing, integrating the writing’s multimodal imagery and contributing to the reader’s emotional and intellectual responses.

Pub Date : 2022-12-19 DOI: 10.30687/tol/2499-5975/2022/01/015
P. Puccini
Through his works, Celestino Testore gave an important reflection on the construction of otherness by the “natural definition”. The missionary discourse ends up confirming or invalidating, through the play of representation, the identity of the young protagonists. In order to understand the linguistic and cultural issues of missionary discourse in a given intercultural context, this article is centred on a corpus of 23 missionary narratives for youth. These texts – published in Quebec and edited by l’Apostolat de la Presse – present a classical ethnological approach for which the identification of the Other results in a closed network of meanings that use comparisons based on an ethno-centred perspective. However, in this kind of discourse we can also observe some unexpected signs of interculturality.

Narrer la Négritude de façon transmédiale : le cas du rappeur Youssoupha 以跨媒体的方式讲述黑人:以说唱歌手Youssoupha为例

French rap music provides an original contribution to literary exposition, redefinition and re-adaptation. As a postcolonial product, rap music rehabilitates the memory of an often forgotten colonial past and offers a new transdisciplinary and post-colonial perspective on contemporary French society. Through his music, French-Congolese rapper Youssoupha enters into dialogue with French Martinican poet, author and politician Aimé Césaire, one of the founders of the Négritude movement in Francophone literature. Through the analysis of the albums Sur les chemins du retour (2007), Noir D**** (2012) and NGRTD (2015), the purpose of the present study is to investigate how Youssoupha unfolds and actualizes Césaire’s works and the concept of Négritude across multiple media channels.

Antigone Power: una straniera alle frontiere dell’Europa 安提戈涅权力:欧洲边境的外国人

In many respects, classics may be considered as a language, that was aptly used to legitimate the imperialist exploitation of white people over the so called “Third World countries”. My paper is aimed at understanding whether and to which extent the Greco-Roman Antiquity as such can become a tool for telling a submerged history and for bringing forth its non hegemonic subjects. I will take into consideration a collective experience conducted by a theatre company in the south of Italy during the summer of 2018. Through a workshop involving immigrant people in the city of Palermo, Ali Farah, a Somali-Italian writer, staged an experimental rewriting of Sophocles’ Antigone, which starts from the telling of personal stories of migration through the Mediterranean sea. Grounding my analysis in the comparison between Antigone’s defiance of the power and the crossing of borders, I will underline the revolutionary message that the rewriting of this myth in contemporary Fortress Europe delivers.
