yā b. Ādam b. Sulayman (d. 819) had addressed the subject of taxation long before, so compiling a handbook on the matter was not necessarily a response to civil war. Nor is it obvious that the precedents al-Balādhurī recorded closely resembled the situation in the Caliphate of his own day, which funded its military by leasing land in the Sawad out to soldiers in lieu of or as an extension to pay. Many of the provinces discussed by al-Balādhurī, such as al-Andalus and Ifrīqiya, had not been controlled by the caliphs for generations. Given the key role played by Turkish soldiers in the 860s, examination of al-Balādhurī’s treatment of Turks in the Futūh might also have been revealing. These are small complaints. This book offers an extremely valuable new perspective on one of the most important sources for the early Caliphate. It should be read by specialists and students alike with gratitude and is a model for future investigations of other early Arabic sources.
yā b. Ādam b.

draw out the specific relationships and networks facilitating this ongoing exchange. One point of particular interest for many scholars in this field is Andronikou’s contribution to the debate on the term “crusader art”. In recent years many have queried this term on strong grounds, but it has remained in use at least in part due to the absence of a suitable replacement. Producing a collective term for the artistic production of the Crusader States (both mainland and Cyprus) remains a challenge, not least because, as Andronikou states, the term “crusader art” prioritises Latin Christian artists, whilst marginalising other artists working within these territories. Having said that, the point is made here – seemingly on the basis of utility and familiarity – that this term should remain in use to describe an artistic “lingua franca” employed in many places, not just the Crusader States, even if it remains problematic in many respects. This preferencing of utility over strict accuracy accords well with many terms central to the study of the crusades, including “Crusader States”, “Latin East” or even simply the term “Crusade” itself. Taken overall, Italy, Cyprus and Artistic Exchange in the Medieval Mediterranean provides a highly thought-provoking analysis that will be of interest both to art historians and to scholars researching cross-cultural exchange during this era. It sheds light on matters as diverse as the cult of saints, crusading propaganda, commerce and international politics. More importantly, it describes a long-term trajectory for the development of “Crusader Art” across Italy and many areas of the eastern Mediterranean that encompasses and informs a whole range of developments, whether artistic, political, military, commercial or cultural. Elegantly written and enriched with many colour photographs, it represents a major addition to scholarship in this field.

which items on the list were necessities for maritime journeys. Surviving rih la or travel narratives also include occasional references to basic provisions, and the author argues that these should not be taken for granted as “simple technicalities” but rather are evidence of detailed planning and understanding. Equipping ships’ cabins for travel and the cultural, ritual, and practical acquisitions to service needs aboard – that is, how one packed sufficiently to “inhabit” the ocean – is the subject of chapter 7. Here Lambourn considers the provisioning and practicalities of cooking and eating at sea, including fishing. This rounds off with a consideration of hygiene and how the Sabbath might have been observed on board. Chapter 8 looks to medical and related texts to consider the mechanisms by which to manage bodies and illness at sea, with a particular focus on vinegar and sour foods as means to achieve and maintain wellness. This links back to the list by providing a basis on which some of its contents might have been included for medicinal and other health-bringing purposes. The volume concludes with a summary chapter 9, focused on the “afterlives” of Abraham Ben Yiju and his luggage list, and their value as evidence, and as spurs for questions about the macro-historical context in which the centre of the Islamic world was shifting further east. An appendix, co-written with Amir Ashur, comprises a transcription, transliteration, and translation of the luggage list itself, with abundant commentary and notes. Abraham’s Luggage is a clearly expounded study which will be of interest to scholars of medieval material culture, the Cairo Genizah, and mercantilism in the Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean. In addition, it will appeal as a nice example of a methodological technique by which to write about and around a singular and limited piece of evidence. Lambourn demonstrates well the potential of one seemingly insignificant document to inspire a rich examination of the life of not only its author but his household, business, and community, and the spaces and places they inhabited.

The “Long History” of Nidūy – from Tannaitic Literature to Late Antiquity Nidūy

ABSTRACT The nidūy is the primary method of excommunication used by the early rabbis in the first two centuries CE. This article suggests some new readings in the earliest texts discussing this practice and their reception in Talmudic writing from Late Antiquity. By understanding excommunication as an attempt to set social boundaries and noticing the differences between the early texts, one can try to see the texts about nidūy as evidence of the social structures of the texts’ creators, or at least their views about the proper social order. I shall argue that earlier rabbinic literature reflects unorganised and non-institutional rabbinic circles that were, like other groups in the broader Jewish society, in process of formation. In contrast, the Talmudic, later texts reflect an effort to form a more organised one with clearer hierarchies and social roles.
