A field trial of an all-optical multiring WDM network was successfully conducted using a WXC and ROADMs. Multivendor interoperability of optical channels over a WDM system was verified by the direct accommodation of both OTN-based 10 and 43 Gb/s router interfaces.

This paper reports results of an ultra-fast control plane that utilises hardware-acceleration to solve part of an impairment-aware routing and wavelength assignment algorithm for heterogeneous optical networks. The implementation incorporates vector representation of physical layer impairments and outperforms its software counterpart by exploiting the speed and inherent parallelism offered by field programmable gate array's (FPGAs). The technique is applicable to both one- and two-way reservation schemes.

Silica waveguide planar lightwave circuit (PLC) technology is very useful for fabricating the compact and high performance optical devices used in transparent and flexible networks. Wavelength multiplexers and optical switches for ROADM and OXC are still being developed to achieve higher performance and they are integrated to provide the compactness required for future applications. New devices for the advanced modulation format can also be made with PLC technology.
