In this paper, an antenna operating near a human head is analysed in the ultra-wideband (UWB) frequency range. The UWB antenna operating over a frequency range from 3.1 GHz - 6.7 GHz is evaluated in terms of reflection coefficient, E-field and H-field penetration, and specific absorption rate (SAR) of the human tissue when the antenna is operating in front of a realistic human head model. The study shows that at higher UWB frequencies, the power propagation inside the human head decreases significantly.

IEEE 802.15.4 Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) is designed to provide high reliability and predictable time delay for industrial applications that require strict preconditions. IEEE 802.15.4 TSCH operates on the slotframe structure consisting of multiple slotOffsets and channelOffsets. However, the IEEE 802.15.4-2015 standard does not specify how to determine the slotframe length. Thus, the inappropriate slotframe length can cause a long end-to-end delay in industrial applications. Therefore, in this paper, we analyze the impact of the slotframe length on the end-to-end delay performance in IEEE 802.15.4 TSCH network. The results of the analysis can be used as the guideline that determines the appropriate slotframe length for various industrial applications.

To guarantee the electrical power stability for economic and industry growth, the power grid would need to adopt the technology of smart grid with the enablement of new communication technologies. IEC 61850 has been introduced for the upgrading of an electrical substation to digital substation composed of many digital devices that help automate the electrical power control for the purpose of power stability. Sampled Values is a basic message protocol for the application of Wide Area Measurement and Control (WAMPAC), which requires manageable communication in a wide area over Ethernet layer. In this regard, Software Defined Networking (SDN) has recently been introduced as one of the communication technologies with that capability. This paper has reported on our first-step findings towards the development of a tool to help checking the feasibility of SDN technology in smart grid applications. Since the smart grid applications must be delay-critical, timing performances become essential and all the modules to be used in the tool development must be verified on that aspect. Particularly, for this paper, Mininet and ONOS controller have been tested. Their ability to emulate transmission link delay values is quantified and reported for the practical range of smart grid application usages.

The underwater imaging systems are drawing attention during the past few decades as more and more applications such as ocean exploration, underwater vehicles, intelligent fishing are becoming popular. As a result, newer and superior techniques are in need to fulfill the demands of receiving clearer, finer and better-quality underwater images with improved information within it. In this paper, recent underwater image enhancement systems which are capable of improving quality of images that suffers from low light and unbalanced colors are revised. Moreover, a variety of objective assessment methods regarding to desired category of information evaluation are highlighted.

Advances in artificial intelligence have led to rapid development in autonomous vehicle technology. Automatic driving vehicles not only use LiDAR to detect distance but also use variety of sensors to detect the surrounding environment that are based on artificial intelligence techniques. This paper presents a neural network method of object classification using color images and LiDAR point clouds in static environment. We use three-dimensional coordinate LiDAR point clouds from KITTI database and convert the point clouds to the polar grid map. The scheme filters out the ground points to reduce the number of point clouds on polar grid map and uses a fast cluster to finish a part of classification. We merge the grids that have points and neighbors into the same cluster by forward and backward sliding window. Then, we use fully convolutional neural network to do classification training using color images in order to get object marked images. Since the output of the full convolutional neural network is an image, the classification can be completed more quickly. Thus, objects can be recognized as pedestrian, vehicles, and plants by combining cluster with deep information and marked image.

Deep neural network (DNN) has been applied to a variety of computer vision tasks these days. However, DNN often suffers from its enormous execution time even with the aid of GPU. In this paper, we argue that the bandwidth bottleneck between GPU and GDRAM has to be addressed. To reduce loading time, we propose a DNN acceleration approach which compresses DNN parameters before loading model information to GPU and performs decompressing on GPU. Using JPEG compression as an example, the loss of the test accuracy can be kept within 4%, while an 8 × parameter-size reduction is achieved for VGG16.

Animal identification allows producers to keep records on the most important information such as breed, date of birth, and gender. Plastic tags on water buffaloes (Bubalus Bubalis) are prone to damage and in order to be read, they should be restrained. The main objective of the study is to create a portable device that can identify the buffalo by taking its facial image. This study shows that with the use of Linear Discrimant Analysis (LDA), the water buffaloes can be identified by just taking a photo of its face for training images and testing images. In comparison with various algorithms used for the identification of water buffaloes, Local Binary Patterns Histograms (LBPH) shows more accurate results compared to other algorithms such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Linear Discriminant Analysis with Support Vector Machine (LDA+SVM) and LDA alone. The output of the simulated training images and testing images show favourable results indicating effectiveness of the study.

The paper presents a low-cost chipless RFID reader working in the frequency range of 4–8 GHz. The reader uses frequency the sweep technique to collect the information from the tag. Chipless tags have unique properties corresponding to the different resonant frequencies. The reader works with the super high frequency which makes the fabrication size of the tag small and cheap. The proposed reader is suitable for many large-scale applications such as inventory management in large warehouses where the number of objects is very high.

This paper proposes a method for creating informative descriptive sentences for artwork images by using “Games With a Purpose,” or GWAP on a live streaming platform. In existing studies, automatic annotation of images did not perform well, in particular, for artwork images such as Ukiyo-e. On the other hand, existing studies on GWAP, the concept of using games for human to address problems that computer cannot solve, demonstrated how games can exploit human intelligence in labeling images. With a huge number of audiences watching games live streaming on Twitch and other similar services nowadays, we propose a solution that makes chatting of audiences become an effective means for generating valuable descriptions for artwork images, Ukiyo-e images in this study, as well as promoting the interaction between the audiences and the game.

This paper presents a practical design approach for achieving a compact, economical and scalable single-inductor multiple-output (SIMO) DC-AC inverter for multi-coil wireless power transfer (WPT) applications. The hardware prototype of this SIMO inverter employs small industrial-grade surface-mount passive components with low equivalent series resistance (ESR) and an integrated two-channel MOSFET in a low-profile single chip package. A 16-bit on-board low-cost microcontroller (MCU) is used to generate proper input logic signals for all the gate drivers. Results show that a compact, cost-effective and highly-efficient SIMO inverter that can be turned into a commercial product for practical applications, is achievable by using this approach.
