[Extract] Focal bleached spots are commonly recorded on Porites, Montipora and Acropora (Beeden et al. 2008). During a diving expedition in April 2010 to the pinnacle of Hin Daeng ('Red Rock') (7°9'1"N; 98°49'20"E), in the Andaman Sea off Western Thailand, we discovered a new type of focal white spots on a massive colony of Porites lobata Dana, 1846.

Coradion altivelis McCulloch, 1916 (Chaetodontidae) is a widely distributed butterflyfish in the Indo-West Pacific (Okamura and Amaoka 2007). In Japan, it has been collected between 20 and 40 m depth at Shionomisaki, central Honshu (Sano 1989) and observed by divers in multiple places from Honshu to Okinawa, usually at depths above 30 m (Okamura and Amaoka 2007). Similarly, this species has been recorded from North Taiwan at 40 m depth (Denis et al. The crown-of-thorns starfi sh Acanthaster planci is generally known as an intensive predator on hermatypic corals, especially Acropora spp. (Pratchett, 2007). Outbreaks of A. planci cause serious damages to coral reefs. In contrast, it is less known that A. planci also consumes zoanthids. We observed A. planci preying on a reef covering zoanthid, Palythoa tuberculosa at night between August and September 2010, in the outer reef fl at of Mizugama, Okinawa. Several individuals aggregated on P. tuberculosa colonies (Fig. 1). The individuals were relatively small, approximately 5-10 cm in radial length. Acanthaster planci preying on P. tuberculosa were also observed in the daytime in October 2010 in Lyudao, Taiwan. According to Gleibs and Mebs (1999), A. planci predates upon Palythoa in the South Pacifi c, which may indicate this is a usual event. Interestingly, at Mizugama, no individuals were detected on neigh boring Acropora spp. colonies that probably had recruited after the mass bleaching event of 1998. From additional observations in April 2011, neither A. planci individuals nor feeding traces of them were detected on P. tuberculosa colonies, suggesting that preying on P. tuberculosa occurs seasonally. At Mizugama, P. tuberculosa breeds in August (Hirose et al. 2011). In fact, pink-colored mature eggs were observed within colonies damaged by A. planci feeding. It is possible that A. planci preys on P. tuberculosa to obtain a more nutritious food, their eggs.

Phylogenetic relationships within Hexacorallia (Cnidaria, Anthozoa) have long been debated. Recently, complete mitochondrial (mt) genomes for all the hexacorallian orders have been obtained by different research groups, but no global analyses including all these data have yet been performed. Here we present the partial genome of the antipatharian Leiopathes glaberrima and the result of the first phylogenetic analyses including complete mitochondrial genomes of the five hexacorallian orders (Ceriantharia not being considered as true hexacorallian). Moreover, we report for the first time the presence of an intron in COI in the an antipatharian mt genome.

The performance of two marine protected areas (MPAs) in Samal Island, Coral Garden and Aundanao MPAs were evaluated after more than 10 years of exis tence. The evaluation tools used were fishery dependent (i.e. focus group discussion) and independent (i.e. fish census, benthic assessment and crownofthorns density) samplings. All sampling was conducted at least twice for one year. In all sites, COTs densities were just above the alarming stage (~1 individual.250 m). Aundanao MPA showed a positive feedback system by supporting the spillover effect. There is high density of sexually mature fish (<30 cm Total length and significantly higher fish biomass estimates of target species (16 mt km) inside than outside the MPA. The relatively small catch (20 mt year) from fishing adjacent to the MPA is attributed to the limited capacity of the core zone (only 3 ha) to support the fishery. It also serves as a refuge site for small pelagic fishes (i.e. ox-eye scad, Selar boops) that aggregate along the slope. In contrast, the Coral Garden MPA had very low fish biomass (4.0 mt km) and only a couple of sexually mature individuals both inside and outside the sites. Intermittent guarding which have resulted to occasional poaching in the notake area was one of the reasons. Further, a newly introduced fishing gear bintol (modified lift net), for subsistence targeting damselfishes has started to operate near the area. This is an evidence of a lesser density of targeted food fish to catch. Coral Garden MPA has shown that the rate of extraction exceeded the pre sumed turnover rate of the associated reef fish standing stock suggesting an overfishing of the area.

Science and management of Southeast Asia’s coral reefs in the new millennium

Rampant destruction of coral reefs throughout the later half of the past century threatens Southeast Asia’s status as the global coral reef hotspot. Increased awareness in the 1990s of the economic value of coral reefs stimulated management responses, but despite implementation of a variety of management practices, these had limited effect considering the scale and intensity of degradation. This paper examines the state of science and management of the region’s coral reefs one decade into the new millen nium. Advances in the scientific understanding of coral reef processes are sufficient to support more effective management but if this is not scaled up and strongly im plemented, then the region risks losing its rich reef her itage.

Diversity is among the various aspects of reef fish assemblages that are expected to change with pro tective management. Reef fish diversity in terms of richness (number of species per 500 m), abundance (ind/ 500 m) and biomass (g/m) were determined for six (6) reef sites in TawiTawi, at the southwestern tip of the Sulu Archipelago, and in Danajon Bank, Bohol, in central Philippines in 2006 and 2008. At each reef site, reef fish within a 500 m area were censused (identified, counted and their sizes estimated) in 6-12 stations following stand ard methods. Changes in reef fish assemblages in the two areas were examined and observed patterns were compared. The results are related to patterns in reef habitat structure and to local fisheries and are discussed in the context of recovery potential of reef fish assemblages in protected areas.

The results are related to patterns in reef habitat structure and to local fisheries and are discussed in the context of recovery potential of reef fish assemblages in protected areas.","PeriodicalId":118057,"journal":{"name":"Galaxea, Journal of Coral Reef Studies","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126330510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
