Global warming and the accumulation of organic waste constitute a serious environmental problem. Therefore, microbial fuel cells (MFC) are an eco-friendly device that have significant capability for the production of electricity using biodegradable waste as fuel. Microorganisms used as catalysts in the anode compartment, execute a principal function in operating MFCs. The present study was conducted to isolate and to screen potential bioelectricity generating microorganisms from dumpsite soil samples and also to construct a domestic dual-chambered microbial fuel cell (MFC). Streptomyces fimicarius was found to be the best isolate for the degradation of cellulose and the production of bioelectricity. The bacterial isolate was identified based on morphological characteristics, biochemical characteristics and molecular identification using 16S rRNA. Double-chambered MFC was constructed by using two polypropylene plastic containers of 1.4 L volume each. The two chambers were joined by using an agar salt bridge and carbon rods were utilized as electrodes. The generation of electricity by the isolate was compared using glucose and cellulose as sole carbon source in a minimal medium. The maximum voltage was found to be 322 mV in the presence of cellulose used as substrate after 5 days of incubation at room temperature and last for 10 days.

People with disabilities suffer from discrimination and obstacles that restrict them from participating in society on an equal basis with others every day. They are deprived of their rights to be included in ordinary school systems and even in the work market. In the process of raising awareness, facilitating daily routines, and developing guidance, the idea of assisting such people with handy tools/software arose and was implemented in the FamAid tool. FamAid offers people with hearing disability the opportunity to be engaged in the society through many facilities. In this work, we implemented a web application that serves as a community for people with disability who can use sign language to access the app. The app uses hand gesture recognition technique which is considered an active research field in Human-Computer Interaction technology to perform sign language translation to text. Afterwards, the text will be provided as input to the app where the output will be generated based on the request of the user. This research presents an application which is considered a gift for people with speaking and/or hearing disability as it makes their lives easier.

The existence of rutting or permanent deformation on flexible pavement layers has always been a concern that negatively affects the performance of roads by reducing the lifespan of pavement structure and by posing a safety risk for vehicles over the road. Traffic overloading is one of the primary factors that accelerates the deterioration of flexible pavement. This study aims to determine the time to failure of the flexible pavement structures associated with rutting, to indicate the most significant factors affecting rutting, and to assess the influence of overweight axles on pavement rutting life using parametric survival analysis. The data used in this study are extracted from the LTPP program. The outcomes provide researchers and agencies with a good knowledge of the relations between several predictors including overweight axles and pavement performance and hence increase the ability of pavement to continue functioning properly over the design lifetime. The results indicated the factors that have a significant effect on pavement rutting life. Also, the results revealed that a 1% increase in the percentage of overweight axles can be related to a 16.24% increase in the hazard rate of rutting failure. Moreover, the survival time of rutting life can be reduced by up to 63% with the increase of the percentage of overloaded axles from 0% to 20%.

The goal of our present study is to assess the pharmacological potential of essential oil extracted from Spartium junceum cultivated in Lebanon. This oil was obtained by hydrodistillation using the Clevenger apparatus. Then, an organoleptic characterization and an evaluation of its antioxidant, repellent/insecticidal, and antibacterial activities have been evaluated. The obtained results showed that this oil had an antioxidant activity reaching 82 % dependent on the dilution used. In addition, it showed an insecticidal effect and an antibacterial effect.

An efficient and straightforward palladium acetylacetonate-catalyzed hydrogen transfer of 4'- (phenylethynyl)acetophenone was developed in this study. Formic Acid was found to be the best hydrogen source in this catalytic system in the presence of triethylamine. Excellent conversions and selectivity were obtained in reducing the starting internal aromatic alkyne to either (E)-1-(4- styrylphenyl)ethanone or an interesting cyclic product, 1-(phenanthrene-3-yl)ethenone, over the ketone functional group present. Over-reduction was rarely seen. The reaction conditions were optimized in terms of the choice of the palladium catalyst, temperature, solvent, and the H-donor/base combination. Using this catalytic system, a one-step synthetic pathway of the hindered cyclic ketone was afforded in excellent yields.

Nowadays, hot weather is an essential motivator that leads concrete to lose its special characteristics. The high loss of moisture by evaporation and rapid hardening encourage the cracking potential and placement operations. The fresh mixed and hardened concrete tend to be damaged due to several conditions such as: high concrete temperature, High ambient temperature, low relative humidity, and high wind speed. These circumstances accelerate the rate of moisture loss and cement hydration. This article briefly reviews hot weather concreting problems precautions, and curing methods and also discusses the role of incorporation SCMs in reducing the temperature of concrete and enhancing its mechanical and durability performance.

In this work, we investigate the effect of NiO nanoparticles' addition on the structure, superconductivity, and magneto conductivity for the SmBa2Cu3O7-δ phase. Composite nano/superconductor of (NiO)x/SmBa2Cu3O7-δ (0.00≤x≤0.12 wt.%) were prepared by conventional solid-state reaction technique and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The orthorhombic structure was maintained whereas the lattice parameters showed unsystematic variations with the NiO nanoparticles addition. The superconducting transition temperature Tc, determined from electrical resistivity measurements, showed an enhancement with x up to 0.04wt.% followed by a reduction with higher NiO additions. The Aslamazov–Larkin (AL) model was employed to analyze the magneto conductivity. The model allowed to determine the coherence lengths along c-axis ξc(0) and along ab plane ξab(0). Moreover, the anisotropy parameter Г increase with the increase of NiO nanoparticles addition.

This research studied concrete design methods. To design concrete using two methods, including the Abrams law and the modified Bolomey method. Concrete with assumed compressive strength 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45 MPa was researched. The research was conducted in the laboratory using two types of samples: cubic 15x15x15cm for compressive strength tests and cylinders ϕ-15cm, h-30cm for the splitting strength tests using the Brazilian method. The analysis of the cement content in the composition of 1m3 of the mixture showed very large differences depending on the calculation method used. The cement content calculated according to the Abrams method ranged from 180 kg/m3 (25MPa) to 497 kg/m3 (45MPa) depending on the class and determined according to the Bolomey method from 286 kg/m3 (25MPa) to 983 kg/m3 (45MPa). Significant differences were shown in the concrete strength test. The obtained test results can be the basis for future modifications of the concrete design methods, taking into account additives and admixtures, and can be the basis for the application of artificial neural networks (ANN) to design the composition of concrete.

Bisphenol A (BPA), a widely used chemical, is associated with endocrine disruption through its interactions with the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). BPA crosses into the human body mostly through migration from plastic packaging into the daily diet. AhR regulates the expression of drug-metabolizing enzymes (DMEs), including numerous CYP450s, and mediates xenobiotic reactions. This study aims at examining how the expression of CYP450s expression is affected, in the brain and liver of pregnant rats, by exposure to BPA and nicotine. Pregnant female Sprague-Dawley dams were exposed to increasing doses of BPA; 0 (control), 50, 500, and 5000 g/kg/day , or in combination with nicotine; 3000 µg/kg/day, through drinking water. Brain and liver tissues were isolated after 2 weeks of exposure, and western blotting was used to assess the expression of selected protein targets. The results showed that BPA exposure decreased the expression levels of CYP1A1 and CYP1B1 in the brain (by 55% and 79% respectively). It also decreased CYP2E1 levels in the brain (by 42%), but increased its levels in the liver (by 126%). Moreover, BPA exposure decreased levels of CYP19A1 and ARNT in the liver (by 51% and 44% respectively), and decreased those of AhRR (AhR repressor) in the brain (by 28%). On the other hand, nicotine treatment exhibited an inhibitory effect with CYP1A1, CYP1B1, and AhRR in the brain (by 67%, 78%, and 13% respectively), whereas, it inhibited CYP1A1, CYP19A1, and ARNT (AhR Nuclear Translocator) in the liver (47%, 54%, and 63% respectively). In conclusion, adult brain and liver tissues showed BPA sensitivity, which disrupts CYP450s expression, and is modulated by nicotine. BPA crosses into the human body mostly through migration from plastic packaging into the daily diet. AhR regulates the expression of drug-metabolizing enzymes (DMEs), including numerous CYP450s, and mediates xenobiotic reactions. This study aims at examining how the expression of CYP450s expression is affected, in the brain and liver of pregnant rats, by exposure to BPA and nicotine. Pregnant female Sprague-Dawley dams were exposed to increasing doses of BPA; 0 (control), 50, 500, and 5000 g/kg/day , or in combination with nicotine; 3000 µg/kg/day, through drinking water. Brain and liver tissues were isolated after 2 weeks of exposure, and western blotting was used to assess the expression of selected protein targets. The results showed that BPA exposure decreased the expression levels of CYP1A1 and CYP1B1 in the brain (by 55% and 79% respectively). It also decreased CYP2E1 levels in the brain (by 42%), but increased its levels in the liver (by 126%). Moreover, BPA exposure decreased levels of CYP19A1 and ARNT in the liver (by 51% and 44% respectively), and decreased those of AhRR (AhR repressor) in the brain (by 28%). On the other hand, nicotine treatment exhibited an inhibitory effect with CYP1A1, CYP1B1, and AhRR in the brain (by 67%, 78%, and 13% respectively), whereas, it inhibited CYP1A1, CYP19A1, and ARNT (AhR Nuclear Translocator) in the liver (47%, 54%, and 63% respectively).
