Familiar to high-end smartphones users around the world, location based applications are scarce or even unseen on major low-end feature phones. There are many reasons for that, such as, lack of developers interest on those platforms, absence of location-aware hardware, low rate of mobile data plans adoption by its users, difficulties to develop for low-end devices and poor hardware specifications to handle a fast and informative application with complex data. Even though some of those problems could not be addressed by an application developer, HERE Transit aims to tackle the user interface, performance and data usage issues to deliver a full, smartphone-level public transport application to Nokia Series 40 (and potentially other J2ME-based platforms) 1.5 billion devices around the world. The application has three major use cases: Journey planner, nearby stations search and off-line journeys. "Journey planner" takes the user from an origin point (user's current position or informed by the user) to a chosen destination, in any given time in the past or future (provided there is data for that). The application queries the HERE Transit back-end REST API for information on routes and display them to the user (Fig. 1a). From there, the user could take a number of actions such as look for details (Fig. 1b), see section maps (Fig. 1c) or save a route for later (off-line) usage.

The proliferation of mobile applications for smartphones has been based on the presence of a data connection between those devices and the Internet. Therefore, users of entry-level mobile phones as well as users who cannot afford a data plan are excluded from the current dynamics of mobile applications consumption. A possible approach to include those users is the usage of SMS as the communication channel. Although SMS is widely supported by carriers and extremely popular among users, it is not trivial to replace the data connection capabilities with SMS. This work addresses this issue with an integrated solution composed by a client platform and a server-side system. This solution enables GUI-based mobile applications to be transferred over a short number of concatenated SMSs. It also presents components for the creation, deployment and distribution of mobile applications. In order to attest the relevance of such solution, an experiment was conducted and its results indicate a substantial level of acceptance by target group.

Traditional manga (comic) and anime (cartoon) creation are painstaking processes. Even computers are utilized for the content creation, computers are mainly utilized as a naive digital canvas. With the increasing computing power and decreasing cost of CPU & GPU, more computing resource can be exploited cost-effectively for intelligent and semi-automatic creation of aesthetics content. In this course, we gather speeches from both artist and scientists. We shall discuss what kind of computer technologies an artist would prefer to use in their creation (i.e. user point of view), and recent technologies developed in graphics that facilitates or even inspires the content creation.

This paper presents the motivation, background and implementation of The Muses of Poetry, an interactive installation that combines dynamically generated character animation, semantic analysis, natural voice interaction and affect in poetry. Inspired by the subjectivity and ethereal quality of this literary art, we wanted to enhance the act of reciting poetry by providing a set of characters the possibility to "understand" and manifest the emotional content of the poems through facial expressions and affective speech. We believe that this original installation will bring poetry closer to a wider audience, while creating a playful, interactive and surprising experience for the user.
