In this paper we propose a nonlinear controller based on sum of squares decomposition applied to turbocharged diesel engine. The basic idea is to employ polynomial Lyapunov function in order to formulate the stability sufficient condition in the terms of state dependent matrix inequalities. The obtained controller gain guarantees the global convergence of the system and regulates the flows for the Variable Geometry Turbocharger and the Exhaust Gas Recirculation systems in order to minimize the NOx emission and the smoke of diesel engine. Simulation of the control performances through a professional software shows the effectiveness of this approach.

Radiation portal monitors (RPMs) are an effective mean of detecting radioactive material inside cargo containers. Polyvinyl toluene (PVT) monitors are the most broadly extended mainly due to their cost. The drawback when compared to other detectors is the lower resolution of the measured energy spectra. This low resolution hinders the use of spectrometric analysis to discriminate isotopes and discard nuisance alarms. Every alarm must thus be checked in a second inspection by a handheld detector or a spectroscopy-based radiation portal. The cost of this secondary inspection in terms of throughput can be significant, specially at maritime ports and borders. This paper aim is to assess the ability of neural networks to discriminate radioactive isotopes from the energy spectrum as measured by PVT RPMs. For this purpose, the system proposed preprocesses these energy spectra, dividing them by specific zones and transforming them into information. In a second step, this information is used by the neural network architecture, which allows to classify the radioisotopes in different groups.

The interest in smart homes is growing day by day and one of the main issues still unsolved concerns the communication between heterogeneous objects (appliances, home automation systems, personal smartphones and tablets) of different brands. In this context devices are increasingly interconnected one with each other but the real opportunities and benefits arising from this situation have not been yet completely exploited. In this paper an interoperability framework is developed to enable vertical solutions in different and multi-functional (energy, security, comfort) domotic applications. The framework is realized with the software LabVIEW and integrates a real and a virtual environment. Following an IP-based approach and exploiting the capabilities of an open and commercial protocol (OpenWebNet), the environment provides a tool to speed up the design of a home automation system, allowing the test of different configurations. Using the developed framework, a commercial home automation system is tested with virtual devices to highlight its designing and testing opportunities.

The calculation of all stabilizing controller parameters with the parameter space approach is a well-known method. Based on the determined stabilizing parameter space, there exist various analysis and fine-tuning tools for the design of controllers. Unfortunately, only for PID controller (of LTI systems) the parameter space approach is developed and implemented systematically now a days. This work expands the syntheses step of the classical parameter space approach to the LTV system class. It is realized by using a transformation method to bring a LTV system into a LTI system description as well as a frozen time eigenvalue based method. Therefore, this paper presents an overview of the parameter space method to design LTI state feedback controllers. After that, a short survey of LTV stability analyse methods and the transformation based method to extend the parameter space approach to LTV is given.

The paper proposes a look-ahead control method in which traffic information is considered. Information about the local traffic is an important factor considering the wider transportation system. The purpose of the method is to reduce control energy and fuel consumption, keep speed limits and travelling time while preceding and following vehicles are taken into consideration. Consequently, the energy-efficient cruise control strategy is able to adapt to the motion of the surrounding vehicles. Moreover, vehicle dynamics, road data and traffic flow in the surroundings are incorporated. The method leads to a multi-objective optimization problem. The design method is illustrated through a complex simulation example based on the CarSim software.

It has been shown that Quasi-linear feedback control [1] enables the simultaneous improvement of the time performance and the frequency performance of feedback systems, by using compensators whose poles are gain dependent. This paper presents and improved quasilinear controller that achieves a smaller settling time of the time response without deteriorating stability margins and sensitivity objectives.

We present a simulation model based on the Nash equilibrium for the analysis of the auction based day ahead electricity generation market. Starting from the empirical data distributions of the market clearing price and the energy demand registered by the supervisory authority, the model allows evaluating the market competitiveness and preventing anticompetitive actions by participants. It also represents a basis for a decision support tool for producers to define their optimal bidding strategy. With respect to other existing models, it allows considering differences in the generation capacities of producers, in the utilized energy sources, and in the zonal market. The model is tested in the Italian energy market by means of two different scenarios and by varying the number of bidders and their production capacities.

The paper considers variable selection problem and proposes an algorithm called the RIVAL (Removing Irrelevant Variables Amidst Lasso Iterations). For a given and fixed length of data points, the algorithm recursively updates the weights so that the ability of the algorithm in detecting zero coefficients is substantially improved. Theoretical convergence is established supported by numerical simulation results.

Failure of power electronic systems plays a substantial role in the breakdown of hybrid vehicle electric drive systems. Early detection of faults can avoid aggregation of the failure and prevent catastrophic consequences. The aim of this paper is to test the sensitivity of statistical moments on power semiconductor faults in a bidirectional DC/DC converter interfacing the main hybrid energy storage system and the electric drive system in hybrid electric vehicles. Time domain analysis of current and voltage signals obtained from sensors at the input/output terminals of the converter is used to detect system faults in the power converter system.

This article presents two variants of the extended Kalman filter (EKF), applied to the fault detection and isolation (FDI) of the inter-turn short circuits in stator windings of the induction motor (IM). Besides the state variables, these two variants allow estimating some parameters, named fault factors. They are three fault factors, i.e., one by phase, which are to be estimated. The first EKF variant estimates the state vector which is extended, simultaneously, to all the three fault factors. The second one uses three EKF, each one of them is extended to only one fault factor, to estimate them. This three EKF form a multi-model and they are switched sequentially, between extended models, with the same dwell time.
