The authors present the radius integrated Wigner function for a general pure state and discuss the coefficients of the different Fourier components. A fast converging expansion of these coefficients is given and its usefulness is shown for coherent light. Remarkable and measurable differences to the Pegg-Barnett formalism appear for weakly excited coherent states while for large excitations both dispersions agree in their leading terms. Large deviations are expected for specially designed two-photon coherent states.

Loop states in quantum optics and their 1-1 correspondence with states in Fock space are described. Owing to their natural encoding of geometrical information and close relation to coherent states it is proposed that a certain subclass of loop coherent states may be used as a probe for localization of photon states.

The phase quasi-integral for stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) is found-the relative phase of laser, stocks and polarization waves is nearly conserved during their propagation in Raman media. Due to this quasi-integral the temporal statistics of soliton-like pulses in a depleted pump are defined by phase statistics in the linear stage of SRS. Experimental results on the soliton-like pulse statistics are obtained confirming the existence of the phase quasi-integral.

A scheme for deriving a field kinetic equation for the problems of macroscopic quantum optics has been formulated. The general master equation obtained for the s-ordered quasi-probability, and Glauber-Sudarshan P-function in particular, has been concretized for the case of three-photon parametric processes in a multi-level medium. Thus the three-photon parametric phenomena have been examined without exploiting the traditional effective Hamiltonian. Discussed here is the problem of formation of field statistics depending on the type of excitation medium with two-level lasing levels that reduce to the Lamb-Scully or Haken models. The form of the kinetic equation obtained is shown to depend on the types of atomic transitions.

For a fixed mean signal energy, the optimal narrow-band bosonic channel is based on photodetection of a Bose-Einstein distribution of number states. A simple formula is obtained for the average error probability per symbol of this channel when degraded by Gaussian noise and inefficient detection. A general information bound is derived for narrow-band channels degraded by Gaussian noise, which yields a lower bound for the average probability of error per bit. Results are applicable to all number-state channels in the limit of low noise and high efficiency.

It is demonstrated theoretically for the first time that, under the strong dispersion condition, media with non-zero second-order nonlinear susceptibility can support the soliton propagation as optical fibres do, but the nonlinear index coefficient n2 in the nonlinear Schrodinger equation should be substituted by the effective nonlinear index coefficient defined here. The results obtained here can be easily extended to discuss the other nonlinear effects connected with the nonlinear index coefficient in the media.

The author considers the stimulated emission process that occurs at the difference-frequency generation of a bichromatic field interacting with a three-level atom in the Lambda configuration. In the low-intensity limit of both laser fields and at finite detunings, there are two induced excitations whose lifetimes are much longer in comparison to those of excitations spontaneously emitted by the excited states of the atom. Conditions are established under which the two-photon stimulated emission prevails, indicating that significant amplification is likely to occur at the difference-frequency generation.

The generalized single-mode and two-mode squeeze operators are diagonalized by employing Bogolyubov and Bogolyubov-Valatin transformations, and the unitary operators performing these transformations are derived. The authors find that the eigenvalues are complex exponential functions with the exponential factors of harmonic-oscillator spectra and the eigenstates are a new kind of squeezed number state different from the ordinary squeezed number states.

The one- and two-mode combination squeezed states are constructed by applying the operator U identical to exp(-i lambda (erQ1P2+e-rQ2P1)) or W identical to exp(-i lambda (erQ1Q2-e-rP1P2)) (where lambda , r are real; Qi, Pi, i=1, 2 are coordinate and momentum operators, respectively) to the vacuum state. When the condition tanh lambda <1/(1+cosh r) is satisfied, such states can have less fluctuations in one quadrature phase than the usual two-mode squeezed state. Here, the authors examine the higher-order squeezing properties for such states. The result shows that under the same conditions, these states can exhibit a stronger form of higher-order squeezing than the usual two-mode squeezed state.
