Thirsty for a Noninvasive Wearable to Detect Dehydration: A Review 渴求检测脱水的无创可穿戴设备:综述

In this article, the significance, clinical needs, methods and principles for continuous human body hydration level monitoring are reviewed. Maintaining hydrated is critical for physical and mental health. A long-term, continuous, convenient and accurate wearable device that can monitor the whole-body water content to provide real-time feedback is needed, especially for infants, the elderly, and people who have special needs in their tasks and occupations. Noninvasive bioimpedance measurements and microwave sensing techniques suitable for conformable wearables are summarized. Microwave probing with deeper field penetrations into the dermis layer of the skin can provide a better assessment of whole-body water content. Frequency choices for the probing signals, the need for realistic phantoms, and evaluation standards suitable for clinical uses are discussed.

The late Bob Hansen was President of the Society in 1964 and 1981, and he was made a Life Member of AdCom at the conclusion of his second term. Also, he had a distinguished career in antenna engineering. Bob’s contributions to the Antenna & Propagation Society are described in this contribution, and my collaborations with him.

This is a review article discussing the latest developments in beam-steering antennas at millimeter-wave frequencies for Beyond-5G and 6 G networks. This article classifies all the beam-steering techniques described in the literature in four categories, namely, phased arrays, quasi-optical systems, leaky-wave antennas, and metasurfaces. An overview of the four classifications is presented with a detailed comparison outlining the state-of-the-art and limitations of different technologies.

Computational Electromagnetics is heavily intertwined with the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society. Effective designs for antennas and electromagnetic systems motivated accurate simulation tools that continuously exhausted the available computer resources. This 2-part article traces the development of computational tools and techniques and ties them to milestones in computer hardware, the growth and development of the IEEE AP-S, and some historical events throughout the world.

Growing up in a developing nation, I always had a dream since I was young to study overseas one day. However, I lacked the opportunity, just as many others did. Hence I pursued my first degree at a local university in Malaysia: Multimedia University. Upon graduation, I was hoping to get a scholarship to pursue a master’s degree overseas, and yet, despite receiving several offers from various U.K. universities, none of them came with a full scholarship. Undeterred, I opted to take a research office’s offer from my alma mater after spending a few months in industry (Sony), where I realized afresh that my passion was really in academia. In 2005, I was selected as a participant to join the sixth China Synergy Program for Outstanding Youth, to tour around Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Xian, Beijing, and Shanghai for two weeks. That was an eye-opening trip for me as I interacted with so many outstanding young people from across the globe in enchanting ways. It also deepened my desire to really pursue a postgraduate degree beyond my home country. Upon returning from the trip, I started making actual preparations to do my Ph.D. studies in the United States. To do so, I took the relevant prerequisite exams, such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language and the Graduate Record Examinations, and I scored reasonable results in both. In 2006, I was selected as an alternate for the East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship for the academic year 2006–2007. I was thrilled. Regrettably, despite staying optimistic about this slight opportunity to finally fulfill my childhood dream to study overseas, I had to accept the hard reality that there was no pull-out from the delegates; hence, I was not selected after all.
