Experimental characterization of off-the-shelf LEDs as photodetectors for waking up microcontrollers 现成的led作为唤醒微控制器的光电探测器的实验表征

The use of LEDs as photodetectors has been subject of study for a long time. However, LEDs manufacturers do not provide information about the response of LEDs to the light. It is essential for the designers of electronic devices to know what the behavior of LEDs is so as to develop new applications in this area. In this work, we propose the use of commercially off-the-shelf LEDs, illuminated by the flashlight of a smartphone, as a contactless wake-up system for microcontrollers that are in a sleep mode. In particular, the generated LED voltage is proposed as the wake-up signal. So, in order to choose the most suitable LED and depending of the main interfering light, the currentvoltage (I-V) characterization of different kind of LEDs is performed for two scenarios: outdoors and indoors. It is demonstrated that placing a resistor in parallel with the LEDs allows a better discrimination between the LED voltage coming from the flashlight and that from the interfering lights. Results show that red and blue LEDs are more appropriate for outdoor and indoor applications, respectively.

Spatial Mapping of Complex Permittivity from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Images

In this paper, a novel method to extract complex permittivity from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is proposed. The principle of the proposed method is outlined, followed by electromagnetic simulations, which is then verified by measurements. The simulation and measurement results show that the proposed method can accurately extract complex permittivity of a material-under-test (MUT), and generate high-resolution spatial map of this parameter. Measurement results also show that proposed method is capable of quantitatively resolving local inhomogeneity contrast. This makes the proposed approach a potential and good candidate for utilization in nondestructive evaluation (NDE) applications. The limitations of the proposed method are also discussed. Comparing to quantitative microwave and millimeter wave method based on inverse scattering techniques, this proposed method requires much less computational resources.

Enhancing the Performance of a Rainfall Measurement System Using Artificial Neural Networks Based Object Tracking Algorithms 基于人工神经网络的目标跟踪算法增强降雨测量系统的性能

With the recent development of optical sensing and digital image processing techniques, high-speed cameras have been applied to measure the microphysical properties of raindrops. However, the performance of such systems are significantly affected by object tracking algorithms. In order to improve the measurement accuracy of rainfall rate and accumulated rainfall, a novel object tracking algorithm based on artificial neural networks (ANN) is proposed in this paper. The ANN model takes the features of each raindrop in the two successive images as inputs including the center coordinates, area, canting angle, the lengths of long axis and minor axis of the equivalent ellipse. The output of the ANN model is the matched probabilities of each pair of raindrops between before and after images. Experimental data were collected during a real rainfall event. Performance comparisons between the traditional and ANN based object tracking algorithms are conducted based on the experimental data. Experimental results suggest the successful matching rate is significantly increased from 87.20% to 95.60% due to the usage of the ANN based algorithm. Hence, the improved disdrometer system is capable of producing more accurate and robust measurements of rainfall status.

Fast wavelength modulated TDLAS imaging system for flame monitoring 快速波长调制TDLAS火焰监测成像系统

In this paper, a fast wavelength modulated tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) imaging system was proposed and implemented on the hardware. Two different harmonics of the modulation frequency were utilized to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. Five fan beams of tunable laser passed through the region of interest and projected on the photodiode arrays. Only 60 photodiodes were available on the five arrays, however, 120 measurements of the modulated signals can be achieved through the cascade laser scanning. Three different distributions of temperature and water vapor’s molar concentration were fabricated and reconstructed in the numerical simulations. In experiments, the positions of the flame generated by an alcohol lamp were imaged by the proposed system at a framerate of 1k frames per second and the dynamic ignition process can be captured.

Image matching algorithm for weed control applications in organic farming 图像匹配算法在有机农业杂草控制中的应用

In general a weed control robot system comprises a weed classification and a weed destruction unit. Both unit are physically separated from each other inside the robot. For that reason the weed classification unit cannot inspect the weed destruction result. Hence an important step for the destruction of weed in organic farming with a robot system is the tracking of classified weed positions. In this paper the tracking is realized with a low-resolution VGA camera and a developed matching algorithm. The tracking is necessary as the robot position can move due to stones or other obstacles on its path. Also speed changes of the robot lead to weed destruction problems. The performance of the proposed image matching algorithm is illustrated by simulation and experimental results.

An imaging system for microbial corrosion analysis 用于微生物腐蚀分析的成像系统

This paper describes a viable and self-contained imaging system able to assess and quantify the effects of microbial corrosion on metals surface. The proposed image processing uses Scanning Electron Microscope micrographs to analyze bacteria attachment on sample surface and to estimate the degradation degree of the material. After a preliminary brightness and contrast normalization, which refines the image taken by the operator, the software is able to identify dark spots on the clear metal surface. These are then attributed to singly attached bacteria or to larger clusters, which are the most dangerous ones, as they could overlay corrosion pits. After that, the degradation of the material is evaluated through the quantification of microbial attachment on the surface and through dimensional distribution of bacteria clusters.

Optical Feedback into a Superluminescent Diode Cavity for Absolute Distance Measurements 用于绝对距离测量的超发光二极管腔的光反馈

The development of accurate absolute distance interferometers is a long-term research goal. The key impact of this paper is the development of an absolute distance interferometer based on the optical feedback into a superluminescent diode cavity. The proposed approach employs a two arms interferometer feeds by a superluminescent diode. Thanks to the optical feedback, we obtained huge interference fringes even with diffusive targets. The proposed signal processing exploits a zero-crossing approach to determine the absolute target position. Preliminary results show a ratio between measurement uncertainty and range of about 50 ppm.

Piezocapacitive Sensing for Structural Health Monitoring in Adhesive Joints 压电传感技术在粘合接头结构健康监测中的应用

Adhesive joints are becoming increasingly important in engineering, especially in the field of mobility applications such as automotive and aircraft. As done in recent applications, loading the adhesive with carbon nanoparticles can increase the mechanical strength of the joints. Additionally, adhesives containing carbon nanoparticles also exhibit a piezoresisitive and piezocapacitive effect, i.e. the electrical resistance and the electrical capacitance change when mechanical stress is applied to the joint. In this paper we focus on the piezocapacitive effect and present experimental results for a setup using single lap joint specimen comprising two aluminum plates overlappingly connected using conductively loaded adhesive. It is shown that the system can detect forces as low as 0.4 N.

As done in recent applications, loading the adhesive with carbon nanoparticles can increase the mechanical strength of the joints. Additionally, adhesives containing carbon nanoparticles also exhibit a piezoresisitive and piezocapacitive effect, i.e. the electrical resistance and the electrical capacitance change when mechanical stress is applied to the joint. In this paper we focus on the piezocapacitive effect and present experimental results for a setup using single lap joint specimen comprising two aluminum plates overlappingly connected using conductively loaded adhesive. Development of a Surface-Plasmon Resonance Sensor Testbed for Bimetallic Sensors 双金属传感器表面等离子体共振传感器试验台的研制

Gold-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors coupled with microfluidic lab-on-a-chip technology offer exciting possibilities for real-time, in situ environmental monitoring and water quality control, due to their small size and portability. However, one barrier to their wide adoption has been their limited accuracy and sensitivity compared to laboratory-based techniques. We present analytical data generated via the transfer-matrix method which show that these issues can be addressed by replacing the gold plasmonic films in the sensors with silver films of similar thickness. Furthermore, reducing the silver thickness slightly to make room for a gold capping layer has minimal impact on plasmonic performance but is likely to improve the resilience of the sensors. Finally, we describe an experimental testbed for the evaluation of such bimetallic SPR sensors and present calibration data generated with gold sensors exposed to both water and air.

Design and development of a kinetic energy harvester device for oceanic drifter applications 海洋漂船用动能收集装置的设计与研制

A novel electronic energy harvester (EH) has been developed for oceanic undrogued drifter applications. First, spherical body motion simulation has been performed at sea environment in Orcaflex. Results help to understand the acceleration and forces applied on the drifter where the device will be placed. Second, the design of the EH is presented, consisting on a gyroscope pendulum system capable to transform the oscillations into rotation on a flying wheel. This rotation is converted into a DC current by a micro generator and further processed by a power management unit (PMU). Both, the generator and the PMU are characterized. Preliminary results in a water tank show that an average power of 0.22 mW can be produced. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed harvester is assessed as a backup power of a drifter using SigFox for coastal communications at low tracking rates.
