Background: Black pepper ( Piper nigrum L.) also known as Filfil Siyah , is a significant and commonly used drug in traditional medicine, particularly in the Unani School of medicine. The pharmacological utilization of black pepper, which includes the treatment of respiratory disorders, throat conditions, intermittent fever, and gastrointestinal conditions, is due to the presence of biomolecules such as phenolics, alkaloids, flavonoids, carotenoids, and terpenoids, among others. Aim and Objective: The objective of the review is to discuss the most recent findings regarding the pharmacognosy, pharmacological use, phytochemistry, and therapeutic potential of black pepper. Material and Methods: Books and online resources were explored and the source material was compiled from traditional Unani texts like Khazain al-Advia, Makhzan al-Advia, Al-Jami li Mufradat al-Advia wa'l Aghziya, Al Qanoon Fit Tibb, etc. Scientific evidence was searched from databases like PubMed, Scopus, Web of science, Wiley Online Library, Google Scholar, and others. Results: The potential existence of pharmacologically active biomolecules such alkaloids (piperine), tannins, flavonoids, and carotenoids were discovered through updated phytochemical investigations. Chemicals including sabinene, 3-carene, D-limonene, -pinene, caryophyllene, -phellandrene, -thujene, and -bisabolene are ABSTRACT

The Unani system of medicine provides a distinctive and comprehensive view of health and illness. This conventional approach places a strong emphasis on the harmony and balance of the body, mind, and spirit as vital components of sustaining maximum well-being. The four fundamental components of earth (ard), air (hawa), water (ma'a), and fire (naar), which correlate to the four main temperaments of cold (barid), hot (haar), moist (ratab), and dry (yabis), are said to make up the human body in accordance with Unani philosophy. It is considered that sickness results from an imbalance in one of these temperaments. Through a customised therapy strategy, the Unani method places a strong emphasis on re-establishing the body's homeostasis. Herbal therapy, dietary changes, physical therapies, and spiritual practises are among the interventions used by unani doctors. Natural compounds produced from plants, minerals, and animals are used in unani pharmacology because they are thought to have intrinsic therapeutic powers. Unani medicine places a strong emphasis on disease prevention. It highlights the significance of upholding a healthy lifestyle, which includes a balanced diet, consistent exercise, and emotional stability. The importance of preventive measures including hygiene, environmental variables, and adherence to healthy sleep schedules are also stressed by unani practitioners. ABSTRACT

One of the most significant medications used in Unani System of Medicine since the time of Ancient Greece is Myrtus communis Linn. which is also known as Common Myrtle (Family Myrtaceae). It is referred to as Aas and its berries are called Habb - ul - Aas . It is frequently cultivated for its enticing fruit, blooms and foliage. Its berries, leaves and essential oil are commonly used to treat a variety of conditions, including asthma, rheumatism, haemorrhages, deep sinusitis, leucorrhoea and cosmetic uses including reducing hair loss. Wines and foods are flavoured with the twigs, berries and leaves. Ripe fruits have always been incorporated into cuisine because of their high nutritional content. Numerous biologically active substances, including tannins, flavonoids, coumarins and the plant contains essential oil, fixed oil, fibres, carbohydrates, citric acid, malic acid, and antioxidants. This paper offers a thorough analysis of its chemical make-up, pharmacological profile, and ethno-medical applications.

The medical use of clays/earths and other minerals may be traced to prehistoric times. The use of ochre for a wide variety of ailments, including for intestinal problems as well as for various eye ailments was recorded in Ebers Papyrus. Gile Makhtum is an earth brought from a hilly area located at Milos island of Greece. Makhtum is an Arabic word which means stamped or sealed. Due to the soft nature of Gile Makhtum it can be stamped easily. In earlier times Gile Makhtum was sold in the market in the form of cakes stamped with the seal of the head of Artemis (Greek goddess) for authenticity. That's why this clay was named Gile Makhtum . From 13th to 14 th centuries Gile Makhtum (terra sigillata) was the most sought after drug due to its efficacy against poisons and a number of diseases including plague during epidemics. Terra sigillata was included in the first edition of the Pharmacopoeia of the Royal College of Physicians of London, in 1618. Its temperament is cold and dry in third degree having Tiryaq samoom (antidote of poison), Daf-e-Humma Wabaiya (Antipyretic to epidemic fever), Mufarreh (Exhilarant), Muqawwi-e-Qalb (Cardiotonic), Muqawwi-e-Meda (stomachic), Qabiz (Astringent), Habis-ud-Dam (Styptic), Mujaffif (Desiccant), Mugharri (Agglutinant) and Mundamile qurooh (cicatrizant) actions. The chemical composition of Gile Makhtum is Silicates-37.23%, Ferric oxide-4.08%, Aluminum oxide-13.51%, Calcium oxide-22.90%, Magnesia and alkali oxides-1.50%. This clay is supposed to be the first drug used on humans for clinical trials. Wendel Thumblardt, a German prisoner, was the first human volunteer for testing the theriac effect of terra sigillata, against mercury sublimate. He drank a draught of the clay mixed with wine after consuming mercury sublimate and he survived. As per agreement with the authorities he was freed from prison. This review will be helpful to the students, researchers for exploring other actions as mentioned in literature by modern methods.
