The sociological drivers of segmentation within youth and children's mission and ministry in Western contexts are commonly seen as social developments in the last 70 years. This view focuses on the symptoms of foundational issues relating to modernity (specifically the emergence of the reflexive self) and so overlooks the significance of deeper questions that began further back in history. Considering these foundational issues should lead churches to reflect on the value of more intergenerational approaches.

This is the first article of a two-part series. The article presents a curriculum design reformation for Christian education built upon unit planning and instructional strategies representing the latest findings in neuroscience and educational research. The Inquiry Design Method for Christian Education (IDMCE) is explained and analyzed based upon research-based practices. IDMCE provides a strong foundation for curriculum design in Christian education by targeting student interest and an understanding of Scripture that promotes Christlike transformation.

This article will address the power of imaginative learning in Christian formation in personal pedagogy as exemplified in the writings of the Oxford Inklings. Foreseeing the dehumanizing effects caused by an overemphasis on utilitarian education, their collective scholarship in literary fiction helped preserve many ideas that were the treasures of Western thought for millennia. As successful as the Oxford Inklings were in influencing their generation through literary fiction and its power to engage the imagination, using literary fiction for Christian formation remains a largely neglected mode of learning in a culture facing even greater idiological challenges—such as those presented by the Simulation Theory Hypothesis.

the fruit of the Spirit and the psychology behind how it might be developed. As Christian educators in various fields seek to foster Christlikeness in the lives of their students, there are undoubtedly many challenges: schedules, unforeseen events, deadlines, curriculum, and much more. However, it is the opinion of this review that the Christian educator who devotes time to read and work through Dörnyei’s book will be resourced to better invest in—and positively foster—the spiritual growth of their learners into the image of Christ.

Failure is the pathway to transformation. Employing reflective strategies within the three primary domains of knowledge enhances the learning process amidst failure. Where the suffering of failure can seem traumatic, systematic reflection enables learners to comprehensively analyze their behavior and evaluate its contribution to performance outcomes, resulting in posttraumatic growth and transformative results. Failure, of any kind, need not have the final word.

Winter is a time for looking inward. Does not nature itself teach us this? If the lilies of the field have sense enough to go inside to do their growing when it’s cold, so should we. It should be said that there is a crucial difference between inward looking and “navel gazing.” The latter is self-indulgent. The former, educationally speaking, should be regenerative, preparatory, and devotional above all. Calvin (2011) does not get very far before asserting, “Without knowledge of self there is no knowledge of God” (1:1:1, p. 35). In Christian education, inward-looking should support straining-onward. With this in mind, I would like to share with you some interior reflections I’ve undertaken during this winter term on the topic of human intellect and intelligence, along with a devotional exercise.
