Holy Week, 2022 Greetings colleagues and friends! I am very pleased to present this spring issue of theChristian Education Journal, now in its forty-second year of publication. Commendations to all of our contributing authors! Thank you to every member of our editorial team who makes this work possible! One of the greatest responsibilities and privileges of being a teacher is the vocational ethic of continually learning. In my experience, one of the sublimemeans of leaning into this ethic is by actively receiving thewisdomof the studentswithwhomGodhas gathered me. They certainly have plenty to share and much with which to shape and sharpen me. I’d like to share with you a case in point. Early in my course, “Theological Anthropology for Christian Ministry,” I guide students to discover the connections between the basic anthropological questions of identity (“Who am I?”) and personhood (“What is man?”), and the Church’s most historic ministerial framework for educational ministry, catechesis. But before we unpack Augustine’s Enchiridion (1961) or read Packer and Parrett’s Grounded in the Gospel (2010), I have students compose a response to a given life scenario:

monitor, measure, and move people to deeper levels of commitment to Christ and effectiveness in making disciples who make disciples. Fourth, the book balances the need to reach people from the academy, as well as general church attending people. Additionally, the book is persuasive in that it continually implores the reader to adopt the disciple making process. The authors use many practical illustrations from their own lives to make the reader feel the brevity of the topic and the need for firm and fast action. Fifth, the book provides all the tools and resources necessary to adopt the system of congregation, community, core, and crowds. Gallaty and Swain provide a plethora of practical advice about how to replicate the discipleship groups, so that multiplication is happening from a discipleship perspective and from the perspective of leader replication. Sixth, the book takes the hard and necessary approach of holding disciples accountable for obeying what they have been taught. A gracious and compassionate tone is called for in this regard, but mentors are challenged to hold their mentees accountable by asking questions concerning their commitment and practice of obedience. In addition to this, the book provides insights and advice for pastors of older and smaller churches whose members may not be willing to make the adaptations necessary to adopt the entire replicate model. The authors of Replicate have written a persuasive book concerning the mission of the church and how the modern-day church can return to the mission. The book is a wake-up call to the church at large and its leaders concerning the unhealthy trend of consumerism in the church. The church needs to return to the mission of making disciples who make disciples. Replicate provides a pathway for the church to return to its original mission.

what He came to accomplish as the Messiah (Matthew 5:17–20). Jesus then calls those listening to speculate on the teachings of the law and on how He calls them to think deeper about issues such as hatred, lust, and love (level three), and then put into action the practical steps (level four) to avoid sin (barriers) in order create a habit (level five) of Christlikeness (ultimate goal) as we emulate His example (Matthew 5:21–6:4). Practically, this model is simple enough to aid lay Sunday school teachers at a local church as readily as it can support the work of university professors. Educators must begin to understand their role as more than just disseminating information. Instead, with the help of models like The Learning Cycle, teachers can begin to help students interact with new concepts, develop an appreciation for new information, speculate on the usefulness of this material for their future, identify and overcome barriers that may hinder their growth, develop practices of recall, repetition, and recital to deeply ingrain the content, and cultivate life-changing habits as a result of the new ideas with which they wrestle in order to become more Christlike in their wisdom, integrity, and character. As the authors close this insightful model, they succinctly summarize their work as teaching for three specific concepts—orthodoxy (correct knowing or believing), orthopathos (appropriate emotions or feelings stemming from correct knowing and believing), and disciplined orthopraxis (living truthfully) (197). Helping students learn for life-change is the goal of any field; but as a Christian, helping students pursue a deeper sense of Christlikeness should be our chief aim and The Learning Cycle is a timely and significant model that does just that. As Christian educators and pastors, teaching for transformation must characterize everything about our work so that eventually our students look, live, and lead like Jesus.

sive and unified could benefit from reading this work. The reflection and discussion questions encourage any reader to consider the experiences of single people in ministry, and in the church more broadly, and respond with care. I read this book through multiple lenses, informed by my own experiences: former church and parachurch ministry staff member (9 years while single, 3 while married), qualitative researcher, congregation member, and wife of a ministry director. Sitting in the pews with this research in my mind, I was stirred to think about the experience of the single woman sitting next to me. It heightened my awareness of how many times the teaching pastor made reference to his own marriage or used marriage as a metaphor. It made me wonder how she was receiving that message, and made me want to find out more about her experience as a single woman in our church. I felt invited to extend Lawson and Carr’s research in my own context, by listening and learning so I can better understand and support. As with any qualitative research, there are a couple of limitations. First, qualitative research has limited generalizability. The authors rightly note that their findings represent the range of participants’ experiences, rather than making claims about the universality of single ministry staff experiences (146). Second, sampling for qualitative research may also limit the generalizability of findings. In this case, Lawson and Carr admit that while they were seeking to have geographic, racial/ethnic, gender and denominational diversity in their sample, “the sample has a high percentage of people serving in larger church contexts, maily in Southern California, with a stronger representation of evangelical congregational settings than mainline church contexts” (148). Thus, they encourage others to “build on this research” in other contexts (148). As stated above, there is also an implicit invitation for the reader, regardless of their context, to informally extend the research by asking the questions provided and listening carefully to the responses. Each reader, church, denomination, parachurch organization, and seminary classroom may ask the core questions of themselves and those around them. “What is it like...? What are the joys....? What are the challenges...?” Perhaps the final question we should add is, “How can we help?”

culture would impact how Christians interpret scriptures. As Mburu puts it, we need not assume our cultures and worldview but subject them to biblical worldview. The implication to Christian living cannot be overlooked. The first implication is that our assumptions should be subject to Biblical interpretation. Otherwise, the danger of syncretism becomes apparent–mixing Biblical beliefs with cultural tradition. The assumptions should be analyzed through the lens of biblical worldview. Secondly, learning the basic principles of hermeneutics (the four legged hermeneutic stool model in the book gives a sample overview) is crucial to every Christian. Correct interpretation leads to a better understanding and application of scripture. Thirdly, contextualized application is crucial for proper interpretation. As an example, Exodus 20:17 says to honor our parents. Honoring parents applies to all cultures in the universe (p.87); however, how to do honor parents differs from culture to culture. With these insights, Mburu’s work is laudworthy. I commendMburu for a work well done in weaving and differentiating the African culture and worldview with the biblical worldview. Both the African and biblical research is meticulously done. These issues are pertinent to every Christain– whether African or not. In chapter 1, the author presents a dichotomy in the lives of African Christians. In chapter 1, Mburu writes, “We as Africans are still trying to imitate foreign ways when it comes to reading, interpreting and applying the Bible in our everyday lives” (p.4) Living into one’s culture and drawing on it’s resources, while seeking to faithfully live out and develop a comprehensive Christian worldview is rife with tension but a fundamental task. In conclusion, biblical hermeneutics in light of culture and worldview can be a complex subject. Africa with its vast culture can further complicate hermeneutics. The book breaks down these issues with clarity, bringing a deep understanding on interpreting scripture in light of culture. I recommend the book to African Christians, theology students and pastors who are seeking to understand the African culture and worldview and how to interpret and apply scripture in the African context.

In conclusion, biblical hermeneutics in light of culture and worldview can be a complex subject. Africa with its vast culture can further complicate hermeneutics. The book breaks down these issues with clarity, bringing a deep understanding on interpreting scripture in light of culture. I recommend the book to African Christians, theology students and pastors who are seeking to understand the African culture and worldview and how to interpret and apply scripture in the African context.","PeriodicalId":135435,"journal":{"name":"Christian Education Journal: Research on Educational Ministry","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123430346","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This book, highly recommended to anyone engaged in Christian education, is beneficial in helping educators and educational ministry leaders to understand the critical issues related to biblical justice without compromise. Williams’s compelling work is also a must-read for anyone concerned with understanding how worldview impacts one’s understanding of justice.

Incredibles or Game of Thrones) and contextualized examples. Furthermore, by connecting her erudite re-presentation of the vices with spiritual formation practices, DeYoung gives a distinguished practical dimension to her book. Those who are more familiar with biblical rather than philosophical approaches to themes related to the Christian life could argue that DeYoung’s treatment lacks biblical grounds. Such a criticism, however, would be unfair. If the book lacks quantity in terms of biblical reasoning, its quality is more than reasonable. The author handles the Scripture precisely, applying the correct text in the right place. Even if more biblical information could be helpful, no argument sustained by the author lacks biblical support. Therefore, it is challenging to identify weaknesses in DeYoung’s outstanding work. A possible limitation is the book’s length. Whether the author’s aimed public would be solely the academia, this aspect could never be considered a problem. However, DeYoung also wants to reach Christians in general (see Preface), and for those not familiar with complex readings, the book can be challenging. Furthermore, despite the author’s detectable effort to make the text more pleasant to the general public, the language and the density of some points can become a difficult obstacle for some readers to surpass. In summary, this book is indeed a masterpiece of medieval philosophic research, especially in the Thomistic approach to ethics. The author aims at Christian life’s practical aspects, like sanctification and character formation. As DeYoung could balance scholarly and practicality, the book’s most unique quality is the author’s ability to present complex concepts in an accessible manner. Such a strength makes the book recommendable to a wide range of potential readers, from philosophy students to spiritual directors, from counselors to the Christian interested in growing spiritually. The reader will find a stimulant and transformative book.
