Novel method of nonstationary mm and submm microwave spectroscopy based on the phase switching of radiation is presented. The great advantage of the phase switching spectrometer is a possibility of short time measurements, which is needed for pulsed molecular beam researches of organometallic molecules. Experimental researches of the phase-switching spectrometer demonstrate superior sensitivity and temporal resolution.

A sub-picosecond electroabsorption experiment is used to study the properties of liquids in the THz range. We show how the deposition of a very small droplet of silicone oil (a few 10 /spl mu/g) is sufficient to significantly shift the central frequency of the rejected band of a 800 GHz-Bragg filter integrated on a planar transmission line.

A millimeter wave imaging diagnostic for simultaneous density and temperature fluctuation measurements has been developed for operation on the TEXTOR Tokamak. The system is based on the quasi-optical imaging of the radiation from the plasma onto state-of-the-art millimeter wave mixer/receiver arrays. The temperature (fluctuation) measurements are based on the observation of electron cyclotron emission from a 2D plasma area with 8/spl times/16 sample volumes of about 1 cm/sup 3/. The density fluctuation measurements are based on active probing by means of reflectometry. In this case reflections from 16 sample volumes, arranged along the cutoff surfaces are diagnosed. The combined millimeter wave imaging diagnostic offers distinct advantages above the commonly used non-imaging diagnostics.

Samples of cortical bone, derived from human femur, have been studied using THz time-domain transmission spectroscopy. Values of attenuation coefficient and refractive index are compared to those of Young's modulus and X-ray attenuation (CT number). The potential for a non-invasive THz probe of bone quality is discussed.

Using THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz TDS), we study the far infrared (0.1-1.8 THz) response of evaporated gold films whose thicknesses spread from 1.5 up to 30 nm. In this frequency domain, free carriers mainly dictate the optical properties of metallic materials. These ultra thin films are composed of islands that are in contact when the thickness is larger than a critical value, namely the percolation threshold, leading to a metallic response for those thicknesses. Well below this threshold, the islands are completely separated and no electric conduction is allowed: the films behave as dielectric layers. Around the critical thickness, percolation-type conductivity is observed. THz TDS permits to clearly observe these 3 regimes and to determine the complex refractive index of ultra thin gold layers in the far infrared.

A new procedure for synthesis of phase corrector sequence forming a desired paraxial field is proposed. The procedure includes a consecutive correction at each corrector of wave beam phase up to the phase determined by a desired field at the system output. It is proved, that each step increases the coupling coefficient of the received field with the desired one. Such a procedure is used for designing of gyrotron quasi-optical systems and other reflector antennas.

A high power gyrotron using pulsed power generator ETIGO-IV is being developed. The typical output waveform to a matched load of ETIGO-IV is 400 kV in peak voltage, 13 kA in peak current and 120 ns in pulse length. The combination of high energy electron beam with such a power supply and a high magnetic field opens the possibility of submillimeter wave generation with an output power above 1 MW to a large orbit gyrotron.

We investigate a possible fabrication of microfluidic MEMS dedicated to the THz spectroscopy in a mixing technology based on silicon substrate coated with a thick layer of polymer. This layer is useful for the microfluidic circulation and the electromagnetic propagation. We use an original deposition process realized by RPECVD (remote plasma enhanced vapor deposition), called also "cold plasma". We obtain layers up to 110 /spl mu/m without any cracks. We have measured the dielectric characteristics of this new type of polymer up to 220 GHz with a vectorial network analyzer and between 0.1 to 1.2 THz in the time domain with an electro-optic technique. This technology is now ready and allows realizing a mass production compatible with disposable bioMEMS.

We report results from a 1.5 MW, 110 GHz gyrotron experiment. Operating in three microsecond pulses at 96 kV and 40 A, 1.4 MW was obtained in the TE/sub 22,6/ mode when power was taken along the axis. New results with an internal mode converter and depressed collector are presented.

During last two decades we are successfully exploiting the quasioptical terahertz-subterahertz (THz-subTHz) BWO-spectrometers for spectroscopic needs (BWO - backward-wave oscillator, generator of the THz-subTHz radiation). The spectrometers allow for direct measurements of any optical characteristic of a material. In this contribution we demonstrate abilities of the THz-subTHz BWO-spectroscopy by presenting some latest results on measurements of dielectric, conducting, superconducting and magnetic materials.
