In relativistic plasma electronics, both theoretical and experimental studies indicate that the operating frequency of the mechanism of electron beam coupled with a TG mode wave in plasma filled waveguide can not be higher than either the plasma frequency or the beam plasma frequency. However, our recent investigation on the two stream instability (TSI) shows that the operating frequency may be much higher than plasma frequency or the beam plasma frequency.

The high-frequency component of the THz-radiation spectrum from a magnetic-field immersed n-type InAs is enhanced by using laser pulses with duration shorter than the oscillation period of the hybrid modes. Such a high-frequency component is found to originate from the hybrid modes of the plasmons and the longitudinal optical (LO) phonons.

We present single mode surface emitting quantum cascade lasers (QCLs). Efficient surface emission of QCLs is obtained by a second-order surface grating. More complicated structures, e.g. photonic crystals, require very high aspect ratio dry etching. We provide a short overview of chlorine based plasma etching and discuss the limitations on accuracy and the impact of different process parameters on etch profiles and depths.

We report on the detection of space shuttle foam insulation defects with a 0.2 THz Gunn diode oscillator as the illumination source. A pyroelectric camera, a Golay cell, and a silicon beam lead diode are used as detectors. The size and location of the defects are identified and the feasibility of using this imaging system in quality inspection is discussed.

In this work, we study in a system with weak axial non-uniformity, the required shape of the beam-tunnel boundary, so that the cross-section of a non-axisymmetric electron beam is preserved, in spite of the E/spl times/B drift. For a beam with elliptic cross section (including the limit of a sheet beam), the Poisson equation has been solved to first order in the non-uniformity, thus defining the suitable shape of the beam tunnel boundary.

Powerful short-wavelength far-infrared lasers (/spl lambda/=40 /spl mu/m-100 /spl mu/m) and the measurement system are developing for plasma diagnostics (NIFS) and a /spl lambda/ ray production (JASRI). In the wavelength region, the choice of optical materials is very important to construct the efficient optical system. A silicon etalon with high resistivity is one of the useful materials for windows and beam splitters. The optical constants (refractive index, absorption coefficients, transmissivity) of the silicon etalon have been measured by using 119-, 71-, 57- and 48-/spl mu/m lasers. In order to design the optical elements having any transmissivity and reflectivity with less than /spl plusmn/1% uncertainty for the wavelength region, the accuracies of five figures for the refractive index, the wavelength and the thickness are required.

We have developed a portable terahertz pulsed imaging system (TPI) for use in a hospital environment. The system uses photoconduction to generate and detect terahertz with a frequency content from 0.1-4 THz. In this paper, we report on a feasibility study using TPI for imaging tumours of the breast. Several breast samples were imaged and parameters from the time domain impulse functions were used to provide a contrast with good agreement to histology. This preliminary study demonstrates the potential of TPI to image breast tumours and encourages further studies to determine the ability of the technique to discriminate different types of tumour.

Millimeter wave ESR measurements were performed in high magnetic field on the frustrated antiferromagnetic spin chain system LiCu/sub 2/O/sub 2/. This system has been thought to be a dimer liquid state, which collapses into an antiferromagnetic order transition at 23 K. The absorptions in the ESR spectra were observed both in the dimer liquid state and the ordered state. The line width and resonance field of the ESR spectra in the ordered state shows monotonical temperature dependence, which may indicate the absence of the additional ordered state below 9 K proposed by the other group. The frequency dependence at 4 K were performed in the ordered state up to 220 GHz. Unusual features were realized which crosses the resonance field of the g=2. This feature differs from the one in the simple antiferromagnetic resonance.

The degradation of electrophysical characteristics of Hg/sub 1-x/Cd/sub x/Te thin films grown by LPE and MBE as a consequence of the high-frequency and high-intensity elastic deformation effect was investigated. It was determined that parameters of Hg/sub 1-x/Cd/sub x/Te thin films grown by MBE are stable to ultrasonic influence whereas for Hg/sub 1-x/Cd/sub x/Te thin films grown by LPE the mobility decrease and the change of the conductivity type at low magnetic field were observed. The best agreement between experiment and calculation was obtained in the frame of assumption about forming of the thin layer with opposite conductivity. The possible mechanism of the observing effects was analyzed.

We use terahertz time-domain spectroscopy to determine the room temperature THz spectrum of different tripeptides (glutathione, gly-gly-gly and enalapril maleate). Several molecular resonances are observed which we attribute to intramolecular vibrational modes. The experimental data are compared to density functional theory (DFT) calculations.
