Simulation and optimization of arsenic-implanted THz emitters 砷注入太赫兹辐射体的仿真与优化

We have used a three-dimensional pseudo-classical Monte Carlo simulation to investigate the effects of As/sup +/ ion-implantation on pulsed terahertz radiation emitters. Devices based on surface-field emitters and photoconductive switches have been modelled. Two implantations of As/sup +/ ions at 1.0 MeV and 2.4 MeV were found to produce a uniform distribution of vacancies over the volume of GaAs contributing to THz generation in these devices. We calculate that ion-implantation increases the THz bandwidth of the devices with the cost of decreasing the spectral intensity at lower THz frequencies.

The Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) is a single sky-pixel, high-resolution (>300.000), spectrometer for ESA's Herschel Space Observatory. The instrument is designed to provide a wide and continuous frequency coverage with a velocity resolved resolution and a high sensitivity. This allows detailed investigations of a wide variety of astronomical sources, ranging from solar system objects, star formation regions to nuclei of galaxies. The frequency bands cover many emission and absorption lines of molecules, like H/sub 2/O, and atomic and ionic lines, like CII, NII. The instrument comprises of 5 frequency bands covering 480-150 GHz with SIS mixers and a sixth dual band for the 1410-1910 GHz range with Hot Electron Bolometer Mixers. The Local Oscillator (LO) subsystem consists of a Ka-band synthesiser followed by 14 chains of frequency multipliers, 2 for each frequency band. Each frequency band has two mixers operating on orthogonal polarisations. All mixers are designed to have a noise performance close to the quantum noise limit. One frequency band is operated at a time. Modular design of the Focal Plane Unit, with a common optical path for all the mixer bands, and of the Local Oscillator Unit with a common LO Source Unit for all the LO chains, make the instrument very compact. A pair of Auto-Correlators and a pair of Acousto-Optic spectrometers process the two IF signals from the dual-polarisation front-ends and provide instantaneous frequency coverage of 4 GHz, resulting in a set of resolutions (140 KHz to 1 MHz), better than <0.1 Km/s. The instrument development is in an advanced state with mixers and LO chains approaching aimed performance.

Phase-space analysis of electron dynamics is used in combination with the canonical perturbation method and the KAM theory in order to study the dependence of the efficient gyrotron operation on the RF field profile and frequency mismatch. In order to analyze the phase space of the system, we use appropriate Poincare surfaces of section. The flow can be considered in the three-dimensional subspace.

Millimeter wave diagnostics of materials and melts 材料和熔体的毫米波诊断

Diagnostics of materials in high-temperature, optically inaccessible environments can be reliably achieved with millimeter-wave methods and components. A 137 GHz heterodyne receiver using a thermal return reflection (TRR) technique and ceramic waveguides tested to 1500/spl deg/C have been used to demonstrate the capability to measure temperature, emissivity, viscosity, and salt layer formation in laboratory and pilot scale melter tests.

Opportunities for NRL WARLOC radar validation and calibration of NASA Earth Observing Space Missions NRL WARLOC雷达验证和校准NASA地球观测空间任务的机会

The NRL WARLOC radar is a high average power, coherent W-band (94 GHz) radar now operating at the NRL Chesapeake Bay Detachment (CBD) site in Maryland. Developed by the Navy as a research radar for imaging and tracking applications, WARLOC also brings unprecedented sensitivity to the measurement of cloud parameters (including phase, morphology, and particle size and motion) at spatial resolutions unparalleled by contemporary radar systems. The NASA CloudSat satellite, planned for launch in early 2005, features a nadir pointing non-coherent W-band cloud profiling radar (CPR). As part of the "A-Train" constellation (a series of five low-earth-orbiting satellites in formation flight with the EOS Aqua platform), CloudSat provides the first space-based cloud vertical profile information on a global scale. This paper discusses opportunities for the use of WARLOC for atmospheric physics studies in general, and potential for quantifying the instrument performance and science limitations of the CloudSat CPR.

Non-contact measurement of MOSFET with zero bias voltage using the laser-THz emission microscope 用激光太赫兹发射显微镜非接触测量零偏置电压的MOSFET

For inspecting electrical failures in large-scale integration (LSI) circuits, we developed the laser-THz emission microscope (LTEM), which records the map of THz emission amplitude in a sample upon excitation with fs laser pulses. We successfully observed the THz emission image of MOSFETs embedded in a test element group under zero bias voltage. This result suggests that the LTEM can be used not only for the defect localization in LSI failure analysis but also as in-line inspection and monitoring.

Remote steering antenna system on the TRIAM-1M tokamak 在TRIAM-1M托卡马克上的遥控转向天线系统

A remote steering antenna designed as a symmetric direction antenna is prepared for electron cyclotron heating (ECH) and current drive (ECCD) experiments on the TRIAM-1M tokamak. The steering angles of 8-19 degrees are available in the design, in addition to the angle near 0 degrees. The antenna is tested at both of high and low power levels. The fraction of radiated power to injected power at the antenna is roughly evaluated at the low power test. The angle radiated from the antenna is checked from both of the intensity and phase measurements at the low power test. Several percentage losses at the antenna are evaluated at the high power test. The antenna system is evaluated to work correctly.

The steering angles of 8-19 degrees are available in the design, in addition to the angle near 0 degrees. The antenna is tested at both of high and low power levels. The fraction of radiated power to injected power at the antenna is roughly evaluated at the low power test. The angle radiated from the antenna is checked from both of the intensity and phase measurements at the low power test. Several percentage losses at the antenna are evaluated at the high power test. Compact, low-cost, terahertz systems may be based on frequency triplers manufactured using co-planar waveguide (CPW) and semiconductor components integrated on a GaAs substrate, excited by commercial Gunn diodes. Designs, simulations and measurements of the tripler components; CPW transmission lines and filters, with Schottky diode harmonic generators, are presented.

THz spectrometer to measure absorption spectra of solvated proteins is developed. The radiation source is a p-type germanium laser which delivers output powers of several watts in the THz regime (from 1-4 THz). Experimental results for different mutants of ubiquitin and /spl lambda/-repressor which serve as prototype systems is presented and compared with theoretical studies using molecular dynamics simulation.

Transfer matrix approach to study light scattering in complex layered media 传递矩阵法研究复杂层状介质中的光散射

Many useful and interesting optical applications of thin films make use of multilayer stacks of films, or layered media. To evaporate multiple layers while maintaining control over both refractive index and individual layer thickness has become a matured technology today. In recent years, light scattering with nano-structures has received much attention due to the advancement of modern crystal-growth techniques such as MBE and CVD. In nano-scales, in which quantum mechanical principles play an essential role, material properties are different from that we observe in macroscopic world. Due to the size effect, the optical constants of nano-structures become much more complex than that of bulk material. In this work, light scattering in complex layered media is investigated. A transfer matrix approach is employed to discretize the dielectric function profile of the complex layered media and the transmission coefficient is calculated by matching the boundary conditions at each interface. The polarization effects and geometry-dependent characteristics are considered in our simulation model. The formulation and program are tested by comparing with some standard examples in the textbooks as limiting cases, /spl epsiv/(z) and /spl mu/(z) can be arbitrary complex functions in our calculations. Photonic band gaps (PBGs) have been studied. PBGs are affected seriously by the complexity of materials and the polarization. Field enhancement along with ATR is investigated. Left-handed materials are also considered. Detailed analysis is presented.
