Background: The pattern and distribution of haematological malignancies vary depending on age, sex and geographical location. Studies on the association between haematological cancers and ABO blood types have been largely conflicting. Aim: To determine the frequency and distribution of ABO blood groups among a cohort of patients with haematological cancers. Original Research Article Ino-Ekanem et al.; IBRR, 8(3): 1-8, 2018; Article no.IBRR.42665 2 Methods: This was a retrospective descriptive cross-sectional study involving the review of records of patients with various haematological cancers, their demographic characteristics and ABO blood group distribution over a 5 year period. Results: The record of 132 patients with haematological malignancies over a 5 year period were reviewed. The mean age of the patients was 47.93 ± 17.9 years. The peak age incidence for the various haematological cancer was the fourth and fifth decades of life. The male to female sex ratio was 2:1. NHL was the commonest haematological cancer among the patients. Majority of the patients were of the O-blood type, the different blood group distribution among the patients was statistically not different from that of the general population. Also, there was no significant association between haematological cancers and ABO blood type of the patients. Conclusion: The distribution, age and sex ratio of haematological malignancies in our study was comparable to those reported by other authors with NHL being the most common haematological cancer in our environment. Majority of the patients were of the O-blood type, comparable to the general population. There was no significant association between haematological cancers and ABO blood type of the patients.

Aims: To observe any diversity of pattern in the anaemic parameters in the major ethnic groups of Pakistan. Study Design: Observational, cross-sectional. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Medicine, Creek general Hospital, Korangi, Karachi, Pakistan from October 2017 to March 2018. Methodology: 1200 adults above 18 years were included. Pregnant females, age less than 18 years, any severe organ insufficiency, stroke, neurodegenerative disease, known blood dyscrasias or terminal illness at baseline evaluation were excluded. Their ethnic background was grouped into Urdu speaking, Punjabi, Balochi Sindhi, Pashtun, Bengali, and Gilgit according to their place of origin, mother tongue or parents’ place of origin. The complete blood picture was performed to identify anaemia, grade the severity, classify the red cell indices and exclude any blood dyscrasias in each of the ethnic group. Results: Out of 1200 adults, 626(52%) were anaemic. In decreasing order, the most anaemic were Bengalis (57.6%), Sindhis (55%), Urdu speaking (54%), Pashtuns (54%), Balochis (52%), Gilgits Original Research Article Nageen et al.; IBRR, 8(2): 1-9, 2018; Article no.IBRR.42073

Chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML) is an acquired myeloproliferative disorder (MPD) characterized by a chromosomal abnormality (the Philadelphia chromosome) that causes the chimeric BCR-ABL oncogene. An acquired genetic mutation in exon 12 of the JAK2 tyrosine kinase gene leading to a substitution of a valine for a phenylalanine (V617F) has been described as the most common form of CML for those who test negative for the Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome. According to World Health Organization (WHO) classifications (2008), the JAK2 V617F mutation Original Research Article Azonbakin et al.; IBRR, 8(1): 1-6, 2018; Article no.IBRR.39436 2 and the BCR-ABL translocation are mutually exclusive for Ph(-) and Ph (+) MP, respectively. We studied the JAK2 V617F mutation in Ph+ myeloid leukaemia in a cohort of 27 Beninese patients. The ARMS multiplex PCR technique was used to identify the JAK2 V617F mutation in all patients. Most of the patients were diagnosed as in the chronic phase (88.9%) of the disease, and all of them were carriers of the Philadelphia chromosome and considered Ph (+). No patients with the BCR/ABL translocation carried the JAK2 V617F mutation. JAK2 V617F is specific to Philadelphia gene negative MP.
