Will Tracz gave a short summary of SIGMICRO's financial health. Due to the $6000 loss incurred by MICRO-19, SIGMICRO has a negative fund balance. The ACM doesn't like this situation. We are taking no action on this, due to the large surplus expected from MICRO-20. Since the results from MICRO-20 won't show up on our balance sheet for several months, we will not be able to mail the Proceedings to all SIGMICRO members as we have in the past. Instead, we will include the best papers from the Proceedings in subsequent Newsletter issues.

The behavior of a VLSI device can be expressed in occam, a language based on communicating processes. It is then possible to establish that the design behaves as intended, by simulation and by proof techniques using the formal semantics of occam. Finally, the occam source can be directly compiled into correct silicon layout.

On September 22, 1986, a federal court ruled, for the first time, that microcode is copyrightable. NEC Corp. v. Intel Corp., 645 F. Supp. 590 (N.D. Cal. 1986). The wisdom of this ruling is open to question, but its effect is not: the microcode community will have to adapt to new rules, some of them difficult to understand, most of them involving additional cost and labor.

Emulators: prospective instruments for instruction in systems programming 模拟器:用于系统编程教学的前瞻性仪器

Microprogramming is a technique for implementing machine language instruction sets --it is critical in today's computer architectures and operating systems. An emulator is a set of microprograms that implements the architecture of one machine on another; microprogramming is often used in emulation to make one computer system appear as if it were another. This paper presents the architecture for a microprogrammed computer system, the VSEM. The simulated virtual computer system, its monitor and a simulated concurrent PASCAL are discussed. The usefulness of the VSEM, its monitor and the concurrent PASCAL as vehicles for instruction in systems programming is addressed.

Parallel implementation of an efficient microcode compaction algorithm 并行实现一种高效的微码压缩算法

A derivation of parallel implementation of an efficient microcode compaction algorithm has been described. The serial algorithm is decomposed into four schedules of computations. Parallelism within a schedule and between the schedules is examined. The time complexity of the parallel implementation is of O(n2) when O(n3 processors are available. This initial attempt may motivate further investigations in designing efficient parallel algorithms for microcode compaction.

A method of sequential microcode compaction for architectures containing transient data resources is discussed.A theoretical apparatus, allowing the identification of microoperation groups requiring synchronization according to their transient data resources as well as their correcposnding transient data resources is suggested.An algorithm, separating the microoperation groups resulting from the transient data resources in the microarchitectures is also discussed.
