Recently silk polymer produced by Bombyx mori silkworm has been considered as biological macromolecules. Silk polymer was extracted in PBS solution at 37 o C for 72 h or 72 o C for 24 h. The effect of EtOH treatment on the cocoon extraction was also examined. The extraction yield of cocoon was less than 1 wt% regardless of extraction conditions. UV spectroscopy showed that the experimental extracts have absorption bands at 280 nm. There is no cytotoxicity effect on the mouse fibroblast L929 cell. The phenotype of L929 cell was not changed under the experimental conditions. The proliferation behavior of L929 cell was not affected by the addition of cocoon extract. Therefore, cocoon extract might be cytocompatible and can be used as promising biomaterials.

Effect of different diets on growth and development of the two-spotted cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus (Orthoptera: Gryllidae)

Many insects have gained increasing attention as an alternative protein for humans. Among those, the two-spotted cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus (Orthoptera: Gryllidae), was recently approved as a general food ingredient by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. For industrial utilization of G. bimaculatus , mass rearing techniques and production system should be standardized first. In this study, we investigated the effects of five different feeds on the growth and development of G. bimaculatus. Feed is the one of the key factors that has considerable effects on rearing insects. With five different kinds of feed on 1st, 3rd, and 5th instar nymphs, the change of survival rate, body weight were monitored up to eight wk after hatching. We concluded that 50% of soybean flour, 20% of corn powder, 10% of rice bran, 9% of milk serum, 10% of rice flour, 0.5% of microorganisms, and 0.5% of multivitamins and minerals (diet C) was the best mix for promoting growth and development of 3rd instar nymphs compared to the control diet.

This study examined the biological characteristics of Meganoton scribae under the following conditions: temperature (20, 25, 30°C), humidity (60 ± 10%), and photoperiod (14L:10D). At 25°C, the larval stage of M. scribae lasted for 28.4 d, and the pupal stage for 15.6 d. The average head width was 0.96 mm in the 1 st , 1.34 mm in the 2 nd , 2.07 mm in the 3 rd , 3.64 mm in the 4 th , and 5.89 mm in the 5 th instar. The life span of female adults was 10.3 d, and the maximum number of eggs spawned was 257.7. The results of the study will be useful for the commercial development of M. scribae.
