Laser diagnostics are essential for time-resolved studies of solid rocket propellant combustion and small explosive detonations. Digital in-line holography (DIH) is a powerful tool for three-dimensional particle tracking in multiphase flows. By combining DIH with complementary diagnostics, particle temperatures and soot/smoke properties can be identified.

We employ nano-scale imaging and spectroscopy techniques to elucidate polariton characteristics as a function of the complex refractive index of the substrate. Although higher-order polariton modes exhibit wavelengths weakly sensitive to the environment, the principal mode strongly depends on the substrate dielectric constant.

Sub-unit cells consisting of printed conducting gaps and magneto-static particles to form the foundation of a proposed leaky wave antenna was experimentally evaluated and the results are presented in this paper. However, for initial experimental purposes, vias were used to model the magneto-static responsive particles in the PCB substrate for both the ON and OFF states. Then the S-parameters of an N=10 cascaded (i.e., series connected) sub-unit cell in a microstrip transmission line configuration was presented and it was shown that the propagation characteristics of the interconnected cells can be controlled with magneto-static particle equivalent regions (i.e., vias). Finally, the unit cell designs were compared between two simulation software tools and the results of the printed prototypes.

To improve the efficiency of GaSb-based mid-wave infrared LEDs, we investigated the enhanced spontaneous emission by a dipole in a thin slab numerically. A Purcell factor around 5 was achieved by combining a thin waveguide and plasmonic grating.

High-resolution optical optical diagnostics have long been used to characterize the expansion and electron density of dense laser plasmas. We describe recent studies of remotely-created dense laser plasmas produced by laser air-filaments that project high intensity laser light to distances of a kilometer.

An array of seven fiber collimators with transmission ~99.9% was tested with 1.99 kW per channel. Truncated radiation was disposed through output collimating lenses by re-directing Gaussian beam tails with interior holey micro-lenses. For range of truncation of 5-29% cooling was not necessary. Beam quality in the far-field M2 ~1.2.

With the continued occurrence of unidentified physiological episodes in tactical aviation, scientists and engineers from government and private industry have considered numerous approaches to monitor life support system performance and operator status in-flight. This presentation will cover lessons learned from some of those efforts.

3D-configurated donor-acceptor stereoisomers cis-cup-tris[C60>(DPAF-C9)] were found to exhibit photoswitchable dielectric amplification phenomena using white LED light excitation at GHz frequency. The observation was correlated to the photoactivation of the Au-layer resulting in plasmonic energy to enhance photoinduced intramolecular e−-transfer from DPAF to a C60> moiety. Accumulated plasmonic resonance energy at the near-field surface was effective to distribute negative charges along the outer (C60>)-derived fullerosome shell layer of the trilayered NPs.
