The Virtual Centre for Enterprise (VCE) is a virtual education centre for the development of entrepreneurial skills and competencies. The centre provides intensive vocational courses (e-learning modules), for (primarily) employed learners. The VCE provides learners with the opportunity to develop their competencies in small pieces (steps) as part of an overall learning strategy. The providers of e-learning modules are well-known higher education institutions all over Europe, which ensures a multilingual approach while also demanding cultural awareness.

The contribution is focused on senior citizens as a specific and growing group of the society all over the world. Currently education of senior citizens is being developed especially in the area of utilization of information technologies. The paper deals with specific features of education of seniors which is considered to be distinguished space for development of social creativity. Outcomes of the quantitative and qualitative research which was focused mainly on the comparison and evaluation of the current offer in the area of senior lifelong education are presented in here. Preferences and experience with ICT and use of current computer technology in the educational process of senior citizens are highlighted.

In this paper, we propose to develop a methodology that assesses the efficiency of educational lifecycle processes by applying the generic assessment framework of ISO/IEC 15504-2 to ISO/IEC 19796-1. Its purpose is to determine to what extent the education lifecycle processes exist in an organization, and to measure their maturity level. We want to propose this methodology to assess the strength and weakness of the learning services providers, and/or to benchmark their progress in their improvement project. The methodology will provide a framework to assess education lifecycle process in a standard, objective, and repeatable way. It will explain how to realize an education lifecycle process performance and maturity assessment in all its steps.

Being able to effectively present one's idea before a variety of audiences on a range of topics is a key skill for students at the technical university. This paper demonstrates how pechakucha technology can be used to develop presentation skills and team building at undergraduate university departments.

This paper introduces a new set of compact interactive simulations developed for the constructive learning of computer networks concepts. These simulations, which compose a virtual laboratory implemented as portable Java applets, have been created by combining EJS (Easy Java Simulations) with the KivaNS API. Furthermore, in this work, the skills and motivation level acquired by the students are evaluated and measured when these simulations are combined with Moodle and SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) documents. This study has been developed to improve and stimulate the autonomous constructive learning in addition to provide timetable flexibility for a Computer Networks subject.

The purpose of this paper is to explore undergraduate research skills of students from private universities in the UAE. A survey was conducted in two private universities. These are Al-Ain university of Science & Technology and Ajman University of Science and Technology. The survey questionnaire centered on the understanding of the nature of research, research process, data collection and data analysis. A total of 147 randomly selected students from the above-mentioned universities participated in the study. Data were analyzed using statistical indicators such as percentages, averages and standard deviations. The researchers hypothesized that there is no significant differences among the students of participating universities in research skills. The ANOVA table and testing hypothesis support this claim. The researchers also believed that the students' college is related to his research ability. The chi-square of independence test shows that such a relation does not exist. Males were outstanding than females in understanding the research process. Females and males reported similar results in regard to understanding of the nature of research and in regard to data collection and data analysis. Findings also indicate that the students' believe in their research ability is extremely different from their actual research skills.

Goal of the NIDI-INTERNATIONAL project is to redesign and implement an existing program in order to integrate one year of study abroad for students. In this article we outline the design, implementation the BSc course of “Natural Sciences in the Information Society” that started in the winter term of 2007/08. We also describe a prototypic student project in the framework of the LiLa project that has to be implemented in the second semester abroad.

Victoria University of Wellington (VUW), New Zealand (NZ) offers open entry to its Bachelor of Engineering (BE) program. Advancement in this degree is dependent on the attaining of a B (65%) average over the required first year papers. The BE program currently has an unacceptable 60 percent attrition rate. This paper details our attempts to identify the barriers to successful student completion of the BE degree by surveying students in their first, third and fourth years of studies. Attempts have been made to address several of the barriers identified and then to quantify the effectiveness of these initiatives.

The state of Qatar has embarked upon a novel challenging experiment of massively investing in its education and research infrastructures with the goal set on becoming a knowledge-based economy by 2030. World class institutions, such as Carnegie Mellon University, were therefore invited to offer identical versions of some of their undergraduate programs in Qatar. Numerous challenges inevitably emerged as a result of this rough transition that our students experience, particularly within Computer Science, which initially led to large attrition rates during the first few years. In this paper, we discuss some of these challenges that particularly occur during the first year. We shed some light on strategies taken in our revamped Computer Science introductory Freshmen Immigration course. We share our experience with how this course helped smooth this transition for first year students to make their experience more exciting and rewarding.
