In view of the scarcity of medical devices necessary to combat the outbreak crisis caused by the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic, an exceptional regime regarding applicable device conformity assessment procedures and market surveillance was established through Recommendation (EU) 2020/403 of the European Commission of 13 March. This was adopted by Portugal through the publication of Decree-Law no. 14-E / 2020 of 13 April. Many guidelines were issued during the pandemic by INFARMED and with the cooperation of other national entities (Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, national Industry and General Directorate of Health) to support medical device manufacturers and importers. It is important that these guidelines are reflected in the development of the Portuguese medical device industry in order to promote its international recognition and to ease access to other medical markets. A detailed analysis of all variables here included in this opinion article, together with some proposals, aims to promote a national strategic vision in the area of the development and production of medical devices, in order to enhance ideas and gains that resulted from these responses to the crisis, serving for future analysis to be published in due course.

A new era starts here As we have announced during the last months, 2020 is the year for full open access of the Biomedical and Biopharmaceutical Research journal. A longtime objective is now fulfilled, and it is an evolutionary landmark intending to reach another level of organization and consolidation. To reach this point, a great deal of work was done by a small but dedicated team within the BBR. At this time, we remind ourselves of our independent character, separate from any editorial or industry group, exclusively rooted in the science and education world, and under a non¬profit frame. Additionally, it is important to remember that we are wholeheartedly dedicated to the growth of scientific culture thought made real in our common mother-language within the wide “Lusophone” space. These were the founding purposes, and through them we have been supporting many institutions and individuals, especially in Portugal and Brasil, acting as a “window” that has been expanding since our inception. Our journal is, in fact, already an extraordinary science network, Portuguese – based but currently involving other institutions and individuals from all over the world. Nearly all our published papers reveal original research, most often developed under partnership. Our publication shift is a relevant attribute effectively contributing to the advancement of knowledge, impacting researchers, institutions, communities and cultures. It is not easy to gather editors from very different origins, cultural background, and experiences, but our resulting quality evolution is obvious. We are committed to continuing these objectives, without forgetting our founding principles. The open access of BBR is a determinant milestone. Furthermore, our editorial policy is also in progress, being more adapted to the current future, more attractive, and surely more demanding not only for authors but also for editors and peer-reviewers. We are in fact entering a new era, a new consolidation phase to reach higher quality standards. Thank you to all who, in different forms, made this possible. We are deeply grateful for your generous contributions, and we look forward to working together for a bright future.

The major goal of this research work was to use the dry extract of the fruits of Jussara palm tree (Euterpe edulis Martius) in the development of a tinting shampoo (0.3% (w/v) anthocyanin extract) and an exfoliating beauty cream integrating granules from the seeds of the fruit (1%, w/v). The dry extract was characterized via determination of the content of anthocyanins by the differential pH method, antioxidant activity by the phospho-molybdenum complex methodology, and antimicrobial activity by the disc-diffusion method. The extraction yield was 2.3% (w/w) (2.25 g dry extract/100 g fruit), with an antioxidant activity of 139.0 ± 5.5% relative to that of ascorbic acid, indicating a high antioxidant capacity. The anthocyanin extract did not exhibit antimicrobial activity. The physico-chemical stability characteristics of both the tinting shampoo and the exfoliating cream were evaluated via accelerated stability studies at 0, 30, 60 and 90 days of storage at 40 ± 2 °C and 75 ± 5% relative humidity. The cosmetic products prepared were stable in relation to the physico-chemical characteristics under the conditions studied.

The Nutrition and Food Sciences section includes two sequential papers regarding the anthropometric evaluation of pre-school and school age children from the Canarian Islands (Biomed & Biopharm Research, 2019;(16) 2; 154-164 DOI:10.19277/bbr.16.2.207) and from Azores (Biomed & Biopharm Research, 2019;(16) 2; 165-175 DOI:10.19277/bbr.16.2.208). These two cross-sectional studies focus the prevalence of normal weight, overweight, and obesity in those age groups, completing similar information published in the last issue of our journal in reference to the Madeiran Islands. A complete characterization of this condition is now achieved and described for the entire European Macaronesian islands, underlining the originality and interest of these papers.

Many current models of beauty in developed countries represent extreme thinness in women and a muscular body in men. The body image perception will condition the search for ideal beauty through different behaviors and can be transformed into eating disorders. The university students, with the changes typical of youth and university transition, are a vulnerable group. The purpose of this analysis was to evaluate the concerns about body shape in university students from the Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias. The study included 163 students, of whom 100 were women, with a mean age of 21.71 (SD=3.80) years. 81% of men presented no body shape concerns, 17.50% showed mild, 1.60% moderate and 0% intense preoccupation. In comparison, 59% of women presented no level of body shape concerns, 27% showed a mild, 10% moderate, and 4% intense body shape preoccupation. The odds ratio of presenting concerns about body shape were significantly related to being of female gender. There were more cases of preoccupation about body shape in women, regardless of age, academic course, or adherence to the Mediterranean diet.

The present study had as its main objective the evaluation of the consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), omegas 3 (n-3) and 6 (n-6). The sample consisted of six women over 40 years old, living in Lisbon. A cross-sectional analysis of the consumption of omega-3 and 6 was made through the application of a 3-day food diary (2 weekdays and 1 weekend day), and later analysis of the data by the FoodProcessor program. The results showed that there was an inadequate intake of n-3 and n-6 PUFAs. Further analysis showed that n-6 intake was high (84%) in comparison to n-3 intake (16%), and the ratio of n-6 and n-3 intake was not in line with recommendations. The results of this study suggest that the sample presents an inadequate intake of n-3 and n-6 PUFA, and it is necessary to emphasize the importance of nutritional programs in order to reduce the probability of occurrence of certain pathologies associated with imbalance of n-6 / n-3 intake.

In order to evaluate the nutritional status of Câmara dos Lobos Municipality students, all pre-primary and primary public schools located in the municipality were contacted. The assessment of height and body weight, used to calculate body mass index as a method of diagnosing low weight, overweight, or obesity, was performed in 1405 students aged 3 to 9 years. The cut-off points of the BMI adopted by the IOTF were used to calculate the prevalence of underweight, overweight and obesity. The prevalence of underweight, overweight and obesity was 2.5%, 36.9% and 13.1%, respectively. In children between the ages of 3 and 5 the prevalence of overweight (including obesity) is 6.9-12.8% in boys and 6.99.8% in girls. Six-year-olds had a higher prevalence of overweight when compared to other children. Students from the schools of the Estreito community in Câmara de Lobos presented the highest prevalence of low weight (3.5%). Students from the community of Curral das Freiras presented a higher prevalence of overweight (42.0%), and the prevalence of obesity was 21.0%. In order to prevent childhood obesity the municipality of Câmara de Lobos might consider these results for appropriate action.

Sedentary habits are in the origin of microcirculation dysfunctions however simple tasks might act as active preventers. This study aims to evaluate potential changes in microcirculation by using subsurface polarisation light spectroscopy in human foot, while march in place. Eleven healthy volunteers (25.6 ± 5.4 years) of both sexes, normal ankle-brachial index (1.08 ± 0.15) participated in this study. The protocol consists of one minute in standing position (Phase 1); one minute of march in place (Phase 2), and one minute of recovery (Phase 3). The local CRBC was assessed by the Tissue Viability Imaging® System probe, detecting changes between Phase 1 and Phase 2 (p=0.016) but not for Phase 3 (p=0.113). Photoplethysmography (PPG) was also used, revealing significant changes in Phase 3 both for wave amplitude (p=0.016) and pulse rate (p=0.005). These findings can be explained as a physiological response to movement. Gender differences were found in Phases 2 and 3 (p=0.011 and p=0.006), with higher CRBC values in men. Simultaneously the gastrocnemius was evaluated using surface electromyography (sEMG) with significant increases observed in Phase 2 (p=0.003). Nevertheless, additional studies are needed to understand the behaviour of the microcirculation during physical activity.
