The preceding chapters examined fundraising volunteers' roles from a large-scale perspective. This chapter refines the view to a smaller, more localized level by addressing one subset of organizations—the small liberal arts college. College and university fundraising is an area familiar to nearly all professionals in our field, and the use of educational fundraising as an example helps apply previously outlined concepts.

The Everybody Wins! Foundation (EW!) was at a crossroads in 2000. Through a million-dollar grant, the U.S. Department of Education was funding a nationwide replication of EW!'s successful literacy and mentoring program. As a result, EW!'s founder separated from the original operation to lead the nationwide expansion of Everybody Wins! USA, and an executive director was hired to spearhead the prototype program, now called Everybody Wins! Metro New York.
