This paper focuses on a new framework for an Intelligent Environment to respond intelligently to persons being in a ubiquitous computing environment. The framework contains 1. context notations to have a three-key-predicate relations (location, activity and response awareness), 2. taxonomy of the context aware computing in responding to user activity and 3. context aware application design to respond intelligently based on the sensor management and context representation. The framework can be used as a basis development of large-scale optimizations for the handling growth of sensor data and for providing intelligent response in the intelligent computing environment. The paper also provides a proof of concept of how environment response can be delivered to the user.

Broadband wireless access network based on the IEEE 802.16e is one of the most promising solutions to provide broadband services. This paper proposes an efficient bandwidth request scheme for non real-time polling service and best effort service. In order to reduce the delay for bandwidth request, the proposed scheme makes BR code indicate the UIUC and the number of subchannels required by mobile station. Accordingly, it can omit the transmission procedure of bandwidth request message. We perform the mathematical analysis. The results show that the proposed scheme can reduce the delay and the signaling overhead compared to the IEEE 802.16e scheme.

In this paper, we present different IEEE 802.16e uplink channel access mechanisms that can be used to activate extended real-time polling service (ertPS) voice over IP (VoIP) connections after a silence period. The performance, especially uplink delay, of different resumption mechanisms is compared with each other using simulations. In addition to uplink VoIP delay, we study the uplink resource usage with different mechanisms. In our studies, we have found that using the fast feedback channel or multicast polling are the most promising approaches for efficient ertPS VoIP resumption.

The indisputable dominance of mobile and pervasive computing devices and their typical characteristics require services offered to be rethought and sometimes redesigned in order to better assist users. Considering the importance of data mining services to provide intelligence locally on devices on these environments, we propose a data mining service that adapts the embedded data mining algorithm according to situation. Resource-awareness and context-awareness are the essential features that the proposed service will have to provide. Consequently we present a model in which data mining configuration is determined based on context and resources. We separate control and functionality in order to provide more flexibility and comply with existing data mining standards. An adaptable design is attained through definition of situations and strategies. The mechanism used in definition of strategies is an important factor affecting the performance of the control part which determines the configuration of data mining algorithm. Anticipating the importance of the mechanism selection, the paper also presents comparison with three different mechanisms. We designed a situation-aware data mining service favoring adaptability and efficiency as the important features and assessed the alternative representations of its components.

In this paper we present BlueS, a framework for information-service discovery and data exchange in mobile adhoc scenarios. Therefore, its necessary to develop intelligent efficient indexing strategies for knowledge addressing and exchange in dynamic ensembles. Especially in scenarios like MuSAMA, a project dealing with Smart-Rooms, data access, query evaluation on mobile devices and retrieval techniques face problems such as resource constraints, power limitations and time delays in information exchange.

With the growing number of mobile devices connected to the network, demand for appropriate services according to the situational contexts of users is increasing. However, building such context-aware applications is costly because both the environments of users in the real world and available services on the network are dynamically changing. In this paper, we propose a Context Sharing Message Broker Architecture which supports applications in changeable environments which cooperate with each other. The message broker provides a common context model which applications can share. A context model works not only as a common interface to the real world context, but also as a common interface to the applications which share the context model. Applications only access the context model, and they do not directly communicate with each other. This approach has three advantages; this architecture reduces the complexity of distributed context-aware systems; the architecture keeps applications independent from each other; applications can maintain their common context model cooperatively. These advantages enable applications to cooperate, and yet keep applications independent from each other.

A common occurrence in any nursing home for the elderly is a medical emergency such as a cardiac arrest, a fall or a diabetic seizure. Our goal was to provide an effective and supportive graphical user interface for nursing personnel and care-givers who are first responders to such an emergency situation. A prototype called Portable Medical Monitoring Computer (PMMC) was developed to provide a possible solution to the growing demand for effective, appropriate and efficient elderly care, especially in emergency situations. It is classified as a touchable Medical e-Nursing Information System to support registered nurses in nursing homes with vital sign parameters and other medical information about residents who are suffering a medical emergency. The application was designed around the concept of a portable computer with a touch screen, which allows users to access information next to the casualty at the point-of-treatment. The main goal of this project was to design a usable interface for this emergency deployment scenario. This front-end application receives a variety of information, including vital sign information from the existing wireless sensor network called ReMoteCare. This application prototype has the potential to significantly help serve the future needs of caregivers during an emergency situation through its easy to use, straight forward interface that allows quick and accurate access to vital sign and medical data. The paper reports on the advantages and improvements related to the mobile touch screen GUI.

Building automation is a domain where interoperability between equipment made by different manufacturers is rare. In addition to competing standards, completely proprietary solutions are also common. This is a great challenge for implementing ‘ubiquitously smart buildings’, where building automation systems, user interfaces and services can interact seamlessly. The paper describes how a Semantic Information Broker (SIB) can be used as an enabler of interoperability, where an ecosystem of supplementary services is created through manufacturer-agnostic agents.

This article describes middleware by adopting a horizontal and a vertical layer views. Middleware are enabling technologies for application development and execution in ubiquitous environments. In the horizontal view, we find most types of middleware developed so far, such as MOM, ORB, databases middleware and more recently SOA. Two new concepts emerged in this category, the ``middleware of sensors" and the ``middleware of middlewares". The vertical layer distinguishes two essential properties that characterize nowadays middleware and define what is called to be the ubiquitous middleware and the self-* middleware. This article briefly explains all these key words and exposes the directions in which these new areas of research could proceed. It than introduces the spontaneous middleware as a new property for ubiquity in the vertical layer and highlights what spontaneity brings to the different types of middleware.

This paper proposes PosPush, a highly accurate location based information delivery system, which utilizes the high resolution 3D locations obtained from ultrasonic positioning devices to efficiently deliver the location based information to users. This system is designed especially for applications where a 3D space is partitioned into a set of closely neighboring small zones, and as a user moves into one of the zones, the corresponding information will be timely transferred to the user. Although a lot of prior work has been focused on Location based Information Delivery (LIDS), most of them are based on very coarse location data to provide proximity-based information delivery. They cannot be exploited for the above-mentioned applications due to the lack of mechanisms to identify the precise zone and to determine the appropriate delivery time. In order to identify precise zones, PosPush defines a zone model by a set of key location points extracted by a location clustering algorithm, and the zone model is used for online zone identification based on hierarchical searching. In order to determine the appropriate delivery time, an Adaptive Window Change Detection (AWCD) method is proposed to detect the fast change along the location stream. Finally, we describe a prototypical application which deliveries information of commodities on a shelf based on PosPush, and verify the feasibility and effectiveness of our proposed system.
