The first studies which introduced the category of masculinity into German literary science in the context of contemporary interdisciplinary gender research, perceiving it as a social and cultural construct, were published shortly after the turn of the century. The paper lays out the basic theoretical approaches to masculinity in literary texts presented in relevant German literary works of the second decade of the 21st century. In contemporary literary analyses, it is not only a question of revealing masculine power structures in literary texts, but also of criticising one-sided and stereotypical constructs of male identity. Attention is focused on the combination of masculinity and emotionality, but also on the relationship between masculinity and fatherhood or on the literary reflections of the changes in the conventional status of man as a breadwinner, public actor and creative intellectual. Literary masculinities are understood as products of literary narratives.

According to the theories of Wolf Schmid, Wolfgang Iser and Roman Ingarden, the presented paper follows the ways in which the reader is forced to reveal the logic of the story's selectivity in the reception process. Interest is mainly placed on different narrative gaps, the so-called places of indeterminacy, which trigger literary communication. Various theories of narrative gaps and text negations are demonstrated in Julian Barnes’s novel The Sense of an Ending (2011) depicting the story of four young men – old high-school friends – who have to deal with the death of their close one. The author chooses an interesting form of story composition and represents the literary text as a fraction which the reader concretizes and defines. This way the reader is able to decipher even those event components that are not explicitly present in the text and they call for different acts of reception.

In addition to information about the glorious exploits of Achilles during the Trojan War, the tradition has preserved numerous sources telling about peculiarities of his growing up. Educational programs, which were developed for the young Achilles by his mentors Chiron and Phoenix, form the basis for the formation of the Homeric hero, not alien to the ancient Greek pedagogy of the VI-V century B.C. Plots about the peculiarities of training and education of Achilles, present on ceramics from the VI-V centuries B.C. are considered to be visual markers of the history of ancient Greek education. Achilles is an idealized image of the hero, which captures the features of the pedagogical tradition of Homeric time. The two mentors of Achilles make it possible to trace the phenomenon of educational continuity in the ancient pedagogical tradition.

Krčméry's Winter Legend is an expression of his relationship to the nation, to life (also to his own), to history and, above all, to literary history. The uncon-ventionality of the genre form (i.e. biographical prose - sketch) does not contradict the thought and empirical content. Although the author's approach to the fate of historical figures is realized mainly due to aesthetic contact with the reader, he also elevated this communication to a non-aggressive opposition to "revolt against historicism" among young artists, whose goal was the "negation of national existence". With the help of imagination, knowledge, contemporary knowledge, and the typical "it was said", it offers alive images of famous men (e.g. Svätopluk, King Matiáš, J. Silván, D. Krman, M. Bel, J. Hollý , J. Kollár, Ľ. Štúr, P.J. Šafárik, A. Sládkovič) and events (e.g. Prešov slaughterhouses from the second half of the 17th century, the Battle of Poltava, Slavonic Congress).
Štúr, P.J. Šafárik, A. Sládkovič)和事件(例如Prešov 17世纪下半叶的屠宰场,波尔塔瓦战役,斯拉夫会议)。

The author of the present study investigates the character of Leopold in the new novel by Michal Viewegh in the net of the characters of his preceding novels. In this novel, the writer does not discuss politics, the problem of men and women, husbands and wives, and the sexual promiscuity, but, above all, unstoppable aging and permanent support of the gradually waning sexuality. Leopold is a metaphor of anatomy and physiology of a Central European man who, in his own manner, has always aimed at searching new ways, at the beginning of new epochs, at the anticipation of new ideas and at the formation of new humans under the changed conditions. Viewegh – already in his quasipostmodernist poetics, and due to his extreme opinions and language and style inventions – belongs, covertly or openly, to the mighty stream of unclear, vague, ambivalent Central European literature.

The article is devoted to antinomy in gender plan of a man and phenomenological aspect of all that relates to embodiment of the Yang in a language. Contrasting the “real man” concept with the phenomenon of real men, cognitive nature of identity law and phenomenological essence of authenticity principle are revealed. Negative (unmanifested) essence and atomicity of a person’s life world and principle of awareness attributed to it are postulated.

The article examines the image of Lokonov, a character in Konstantin Vaginov's novel Garpagoniana. The author proves that masculinity is inextricably linked to the character's desire to regain his youth, which is understood as subjectivity. Having been turned by the regime into a thing, a butterfly impaled on a pin, Lokonov struggles to regain the ability to think and feel independently, without the tutelage of the state machine. However, all his attempts are unsuccessful due to the "mechanistic" consciousness of the hero.

The article defines the features of military virtue, which is given to the heroes from the Kalmyk version of the heroic Epic of Jangar. The main hero of the Epic is the hero Jangar, who rallied the heroes around himself and created the country of Bumba. All the songs of the Epic are associated with Jangar. The hero Jangar personifies a wise ruler and a brave warrior, who instructs his heroes and inspires them to exploits. Jangar and his heroes are not just brave warriors, but also bearers of unique characters and skills. Their individuality is emphasized in the descriptions of their actions, weapons and war horses. In the epic there are also young heroes, who following the example of the heroes, defend the country of Bumba from enemies. Since the Kalmyk “Jangar” is a composite work, the article compares songs belonging to the repertoires of different jangarchis: twelve songs translated by S. Lipkin (which includes ten songs from the repertoire of Eelyan Ovla), six songs from the repertoire of Mukeben Basangov translated by N. Bitkeev and three songs of the Maloderbetovsky version translated by A. Kichikov.

The article examines the main groups of male characters in the poetic texts of Jacques Prévert. In the process of analysis, three hypostases are distinguished: a father, a man in love / a beloved man, and a non-human being endowed with masculine features. For each of these categories, we consider the main linguistic means of their representation, first of all, at the level of stylistics and grammar.
