In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate simultaneous format and wavelength conversion of multiple fragmented signals suitable for gridless and multi-granular networks. Conversion of NRZ and large-RZ to short-RZ-OOK by means of a single commercial Quad SOA-MZI is demonstrated for grooming 85.4 Gb/s frame. The output RZ-OOK signal is suitable for further tributary multiplexing onto a 170.8 Gb/s OTDM stream. The resultant OTDM channel is transmitted over a 110-km dark fiber link.

Routing and Spectrum Allocation policies for time-varying traffic in flexible optical networks 柔性光网络时变流量的路由和频谱分配策略

We consider the problem of serving dynamic traffic in a spectrum flexible optical network, where the spectrum allocated to an end-to-end connection varies dynamically with time so as to follow the required source transmission rate. In the proposed framework, each connection is assigned a route and is allocated a reference frequency over that route, using an appropriate Routing and Spectrum Allocation (RSA) algorithm, but the spectrum it utilizes around the reference frequency is allowed to expand and contract to match the source rate fluctuations. To perform this function, we propose two spectrum expansion/ contraction (SEC) policies and we develop models for calculating the network blocking probability for these policies. We then present an iterative RSA algorithm that takes into account the developed blocking models and identifies the routes and the reference frequency for the connections so as to minimize the average blocking of the network.

Applications of sub-wavelength optical networks 亚波长光网络的应用

This paper firstly provides an overview and definition of what sub-wavelength optical networks are, by introducing the concept of shared wavelengths. A qualitative description is then given on what the value of such a network is, particularly in terms of network simplification. Like any other network approach, sub-wavelength optical networks will have application sweet spots. The remainder of the paper discusses a variety of applications and summarises the type of applications that sub-wavelength optical networks are most suitable for. Finally, it is proposed that these type of networks could become mainstream in the future given the ongoing conversion of traditional carrier networks into large computer networks that form database and data warehouse structures normally seen inside a data centre. These will be used for digital media content and next generation cloud applications.

Getting routers out of the core: Building an all-optical network with “multipaths” 使路由器脱离核心:构建具有“多路径”的全光网络

We propose an all-optical networking solution for an Internet core network based on the notion of multipoint-to-multipoint lightpaths that, for short, we call multipaths. The multipath MAC protocol concentrates the traffic of a cluster of source nodes on a wavelength channel and multicasts this traffic to a cluster of destination nodes. The proposed network can be built using existing components and is shown to bring significant energy savings compared to classical, router-based core networks. A flow-aware DBA algorithm is proposed and shown to have excellent performance.

PID strategies for the dynamic allocation of resources in LR-Ethernet Passive Optical Networks LR-Ethernet无源光网络资源动态分配的PID策略

In this article an efficient method to allocate bandwidth in high coverage Passive Optical Networks (PONs) based on Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) strategies is proposed. The novelty of this proposal relies on the fact that this is the first one which applies PID policies to control a network parameter, such as the bandwidth in these networks. Contrary to other proposed algorithms, the bandwidth assignation made with PID controllers provide a more stable and quicker response than the one achieved by other proposals. As these strategies take into consideration present, past and future errors in the bandwidth adjustment, this self-adapting technique leads to a very robust process. Simulations results exhibit that not only are they faster and more stable than other algorithms, but also they auto-adapt very efficiently the resources when facing changes in the bandwidth conditions. Another great strength of these techniques is that they can be easily extended to control other critical network parameters such as the delay or packet losses and they can be directly applied in PONs with different end-to-end distances.

Current scientific data applications require advanced network provisioning systems to support the transport of large volumes of data. Due to the availability of diverse computing and Grid clusters, these applications can benefit from anycasting capabilities. In contrast to unicasting, anycast routing allows the selection of a node from a group of candidate destinations. This new means of communication allows for greater routing flexibility and better network resource consumption. However, current provisioning systems do not provide fully compliant anycast implementations. In this paper, we extend ESnet's OSCARS virtual circuit provisioning system with anycast routing capabilities to support destination-agnostic applications on single- and multi-domain network scenarios. The proposed implementation significantly improves provisioning success over the native unicast implementation in compliance with the existing OSCARS framework.

In the current IP/optical multi-layer networks, the control approaches for IP and optical domains are separated, which is inconvenient for the end-to-end service provisioning. Therefore, the investigation of a unified control plane for multi-layer networks is a very important issue for network carriers, since it can simplify the network manageability, improve the network agility and reduce the operational expenditure (OPEX) and capital expenditure (CAPEX). The OpenFlow protocol, which has been proposed recently, provides a potential solution to address such an issue. On the other hand, the multi-layer optical burst switching (OBS)/wavelength switched optical network (WSON) has been proposed as one of the promising paradigms for future optical Internet, and the respective control plane for OBS and WSON layers under an overlay model has been intensively investigated in our previous works. In light of this, in this paper, we experimentally present an OpenFlow-based unified control plane for OBS/WSON multi-layer optical switched networks. The protocol extensions and design details of the OpenFlow-controlled OBS/WSON are discussed. By using two different signaling approaches (with and without confirmation mechanism during the lightpath provisioning period), we successfully demonstrate the overall feasibility of a unified control plane for OBS/WSON networks, and the performance of two signaling solutions is quantitatively evaluated in terms of end-to-end signaling latency and packet loss rate.

Evolution of dynamic optical networks 动态光网络的发展

In this paper, we show the recent progress of physical layer technologies for the dynamic optical networks. There is much activity in the design of post-Internet or future networks. These are based on new design concepts that look beyond the next generation network (NGN) and the Internet. The future network will maintain the sustainability of our prosperous civilization and help resolve various social issues and problems by the use of information and communication technologies (ICT). In order to realize the future network, many novel technologies in the physical layer are required, in addition to technologies in the network control layer. In the physical layer, it is very important that especially technology to support real dynamic network operation, such as grid free, format free, and burst mode in both time and spectrum domain. An optical packet and circuit integrated network system is demonstrated as an examples of cutting-edge network system including many new physical layer technologies for the dynamic operation. Other related activities of dynamic optical networks will be also shown in the presentation.
