State estimation is nowadays considered the fundamental element of modern electrical power network control centers. In this paper we develop a theoretically robust and computationally efficient state estimator algorithm, to solve the weighted least squares (WLS) problem by using parallel processing. The computational aspects of the parallel processing, was analyzed and tested using the IEEE 14, 57 and 118 bus systems. Computational experiments are compared with standard WLS methods, in the integral and distributed version. An evaluation of the degree of natural decoupling in the state estimation problem is also performed. The results indicate that a distributed processing for state estimation, is the better way to adopt parallel computing in power systems energy.

World Wide Web (WWW) caches, such as the Harvest cache, its successor Squid, and a cache proposed by Malpani, Lorch, and Berger (1996) from the University of California, Berkeley (referred to hereafter as the Berkeley cache) implement proxy to proxy communication. This communication mechanism unifies the communicating proxy caches and makes them perform as a single cache that is distributed over multiple proxy machines. In this paper, we investigate how the size of the distributed cache affects its performance. We compare the performance results for two different distributed caches: Squid and Berkeley. We show how to choose the number of proxy machines in a distributed cache in order to avoid network congestion and prevent overloading of the proxy machines.

This paper investigates the linearity of a GaAs MESFET amplifier. A two-stage low noise amplifier is analyzed by PSPICE. The large-signal S parameters are determined for different load conditions, i.e. a resistive load, an active self-biased load and a cascode configuration. Additionally, the linearity is described in terms of two-tone intermodulation products of the 3/sup rd/ and 5/sup th/ order, as well as the 3/sup rd/ order intercept point (IP/sub 3/).

A statistical methodology is presented for the extraction of equivalent circuit arameters (ECP's) of high electron mobility transistors (HEMT). This methodology, based upon the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) combined with the Monte Carlo method, can be successfully employed for evaluating HEMT's reliability and their technological dispersion effects, too. Furthermore the method provides an efficient system to derive ECP's values when the measured ones are not available. Thanks to this procedure the device designer can gain a noticeable aid during the design.

Face detection is no longer necessarily correlated with face recognition. Instead it has been established as an important tool in the framework of many multimedia applications like indexing, scene classification and news summarization. Many face detection algorithms based on skin color characteristics have appeared in the literature. Most of them face generalization problems due to the skin color model they use. Moreover, their verification stage exclusively depends on simple shape features limiting the reliability of detection. In this work we present a Gaussian model of the skin color distribution whose parameters are re-estimated based on the current image I frame. In this way the generalization problem is limited. Furthermore the verification stage, applied in the detected skin segments, is based on a template matching variation providing a robust detection.

Efficient management will be a key factor for the future open competitive communications systems. The separation of service providers and connectivity providers requires the optimum usage of network resources. This separation of roles allows service providers to offer services with different QoS and to charge their services according to the QoS they require. In this presentation a solution for the resource reservation depending on users' requests is given.

The work explores the use of Hopfield neural network for a load dispatch problem in a power system. It is a constrained economic dispatch problem with prohibited operating zones. Yalcinoz and Short (1997) discussed a special methodology to improve the performance of Hopfield networks for solving the unconstrained economic dispatch problem. In this paper the improved Hopfield network is applied to the constrained economic dispatch problem. A new mapping process has been used and a computational method for obtaining the weights and biases is described using a slack variable technique for handling inequality constraints. Applying the proposed approach is demonstrated by a 15 unit system with 4 units having prohibited zones.

This paper considers the problem of radial middle-voltage distribution network calculation. The influence of different load types on voltage, load flow and power loss calculation results has been especially researched. Also, AVR influence on network condition has been examined. Calculation results are illustrated on a IEEE test network.

The power companies as well as the public are becoming increasingly interested in the possible link between exposure to power frequency magnetic fields and human health. Therefore, special attention is given to measurements of the magnetic field level and their comparison to the established or recommended limits according to national standards in working and residential environments.

A mathematical technique for detecting fault section(s) and affected area(s) on radial distribution networks is proposed in this paper. Minimum voltage sensors are installed at various locations at the customer ends. The novel method uses messages obtained from operated voltage sensors and topological information of distribution networks to detect accurately fault section(s) and fault affected area(s) due to single as well as multiple faults. A mathematics algorithm using C++ is developed which suggests that the technique is efficient and effective.
