This paper deals with reconstruction filters and appropriate prefiltering techniques in the volume rendering. Sampling, resampling and reconstruction of continuous functions are used in many different fields. To satisfy conditions of Shannon's theorem, prefiltering of images or data volumes is usually required before sampling. The usual approach is to use a Gaussian prefilter, where the cutoff frequency is determined by the sampling rate, and one of the different reconstruction schemes is then applied. The problem is to determine a prefilter so that the reconstruction will reproduce the original object as accurately as possible. If the combination of prefiltering and reconstruction in the volumetric space is not adequate, aliasing artifacts will appear. Aliasing artifacts project from the three-dimensional space onto the projection plane and superpose to the artifacts caused by sampling and reconstruction in two dimensions. We present a methodology for designing filters based on optimization of combined operation of prefiltering and reconstruction postfiltering. This methodology offers a framework for comparing different reconstruction schemes in equal circumstances. The correct choice of reconstruction will also influence the derivative reconstruction which is used for shading. We demonstrate our results on examples in two- and three-dimensional space.

This paper presents a method for detailed representation of substations in power system state estimation. The conventional weighted least squares state estimator is extended by incorporating the active and reactive power flows of circuit breakers as state variables. Power system observability and state estimates are determined based on a reduced model. The method is illustrated with a 12 bus system.

A thermosyphon solar water heater consisting of two flat plate collectors of total aperture area of 2.7 m/sup 2/ and 150-lt storage tank is modelled using TRNSYS. Simple experiments were conducted in order to validate the model. During the experiments, the weather conditions were measured every 10 minutes and integrated over an hour. The temperature of the water in the storage tank is also measured at the beginning and end of the day. The storage tank temperature rise was used to validate the model by using the actual weather data as input to the program. Validation tests were performed for 25 days spread over 6 months and the mean deviation between the predicted and the actual values of water temperature rise is 4.7% which is very satisfactory.

An important aspect of nuclear energy is safety. One of the most severe accidents in nuclear power generation is the loss of coolant, where the recirculating coolant of the pressurized water reactor may flash into steam. Under such two-phase flow conditions, the reactor cooling pumps become unable to generate the same head as that of the single-phase flow case. In this work, high-speed video (HSV) observations were conducted on a nuclear reactor cooling pump. The HSV identified the bubbles motion into the impeller passages and assisted in the development of a mathematical model based on the control volume method for rotating machines.

This paper deals with the study of the mechanism of medium access in the reverse link within a third generation UTRA system. The voice service is beamed off through a dedicated channel whereas a common channel is used for a very widespread service like Web traffic. The results reveal that there are great differences between the voice only system and the data only system. We can conclude that the maximum number of users within the system will depend only on the required quality of service in the case of the voice system (admission control), but in the case of the data system it depends on the available resources in the access channel.

The work presented in this paper concerns the application of a computer model for the economical assessment of investments in the wind energy field, in order that the PUBLIC POWER CORPORATION of Greece can evaluate the potential private investments, during the negotiations for the Power Purchase Agreement. All technical and economic elements of the investment are taken into account, as well as the Greek legislation (affecting available grants, tariffs, grid conditions, etc.). The model calculates the cash flows of the entire investment and of the equity and some basic indices for the economic assessment such as the net present value, the internal rate of return, the discounted payback period and the benefit-to-cost ratio of the cash flows above.

The computer tool named CAMIA (Computer-Aided Medical Image Analyzer) for quantitative and qualitative analysis of different medical images is described The system CAMIA can handle different standard image formats such as: BMP, GIF, RAW, JPEG, Biorad PIC, and DICOM. After preprocessing steps the main procedure applied in the system CAMIA is segmentation which is based on the watershed algorithm; the simplified mathematical model of the human visual system. In this way very good subjective quality of the primary segmented image is obtained. By using the interactive semiautomatic method of region growing and selection the medical doctor is able to select easily and extract objects of interest for further diagnosis. This procedure permits high reproducibility of results and robustness in object area determination as prerequisites for precise and objective quantification of detected objects. The embedded modules for statistical and quantitative analysis of objects enables the application of CAMIA in diagnostic practices such as cytology, patho-hystology, radiology (MR, CT, etc.). The system is derived and tested in cooperation with doctor-specialists in the Military Medical Academy in Belgrade.

This paper presents the ORHIDEA project, which provides intelligent integration of information using mediation technology. ORHIDEA (an Internet-based version of GinisNT) is used for the integration of spatial data from geographic information system (GIS) databases with alphanumerical data from relational database management systems (RDBMSs) and other data sources.

Each year as line and system loadings increase due to the energy request and more operating companies superimpose higher voltage transmission systems on existing facilities, the ultra high voltage power systems are coming more to the fore. Since the metal oxide surge arresters have an important role in the insulation coordination of the whole power system, in this paper the present development state and the different design criteria of the metal oxide surge arresters are taken into account for the ultra high voltage transmission lines of 1000 kV.
