Pub Date : 2022-02-27 DOI: 10.37745/bjel.2013/vol10no1pp.1-11
Plagiarism is a critical concern at all academic institutions nowadays. When someone uses the words/texts of another person without acknowledging them, it is wrong. He can be accused of plagiarism if he does not acknowledge the source of information. This article begins with an overview of plagiarism, examples of different types of plagiarism, penalties for plagiarists, and sheds light on how to avoid it by different strategies. Finally, it discusses the citation (in-text and references) style (APA) elaborately that is most widely used by universities /ISI/refereed journals.

Although it is believed and even proved that students’ anxiety in foreign language learning is usually negatively associated with their performance in this field, this paper presents that higher level of such anxiety correlates with higher level of motivation, which is linked to better achievement in classroom settings for second language (L2) learning. This study explores how a combination of learner-internal factors (anxiety and motivation) may have positive impact on the performance of a group of Chinese graduate students, based on a repeated two-way ANOVA of the data collected before and after a mock business negotiation in English. The results suggest that negative psychological factors may work positively in a result-oriented project, which may in turn alleviate negative emotions and facilitate L2 learning in the long run.

The Performative Aspect of Spontaneous Prayers in Cameroon: A Study in Evasive Media in Interactions
Pub Date : 2022-02-15 DOI: 10.37745/bjel.2013/vol10n2pp115
Sala Bonaventure M.
Studies on prayers have focussed mainly on their vertical interactive dimension between the faithful and the deity. As a result, notably with spontaneous prayers, prayers have hardly been seen as a form of horizontal communication, or as ‘evasively’ having a communicative value with the faithful, who constitute their immediate audience. This study therefore considers the horizontal effect spontaneous prayers have on the audience that listens to, or overhears, them. Our analyses show that spontaneous prayers, which turn out to be a medium of communication in its own right, can facilitate complex conversational events as they can be used for self-endearment; for control of the behaviour of the audience; as a pre-emptive measure to ward off blame; as a mild way of being insolent; to dish out criticisms or disapprove of someone’s behaviour with little retort; to give praise and advice without sounding suspicious. Given that spontaneous prayers enable speakers to better communicate sensitive information, we classify them as a medium of tact and a diplomatic weapon that helps in repairing Face Threatening Acts (FTAs) in conversation

A Review of Conversational Impliciture
Pub Date : 2022-02-15 DOI: 10.37745/bjel.2013/vol10n2pp1629

Within the field of pragmatics, there has been an ongoing discussion about the language meaning. The thought of scholars from the Gricean, neo-Gricean, and post-Gricean schools disagreed on how to define a common language phenomenon, a kind of pragmatically enriched meaning imparted but not literally and clearly articulated by the utterance. Meanwhile, three cognitive processing models for impliciture have been proposed: the Default Model, the Standardization Model, and the Context-driven Model. The present study provides a detailed review of the researches on the impliciture and pays attention to a possible aspect of further study on impliciture.

Discourse Analysis in Selected Articles of Saudi Women’s Empowerment
Pub Date : 2022-02-15 DOI: 10.37745/bjel.2013/vol10n2pp3950

In Saudi Arabia, women receive genuine appreciation for their inherent high qualities, thus being instrumental in bringing change in the way women behave in the eyes of the public. The data collections are selected articles about agreeing Saudi women to be members of the Shoura Council for the first time on January 11, 2013. The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah, delivered a momentous decree to give the opportunity for Saudi women to exercise their talents as effectively as their male counterparts and to go out of their comfort zones, away from the luxuries of their homes, trying to earn a living and carve their names in their respective careers. Cohesive devices of lexical cohesion and beyond cohesion of Salkie’s (1995) are used for the data analysis. The findings show that by using lexical and beyond cohesion, Saudi women’s empowerment is served to transform their lives for the better and elevate them to a higher status to showcase their great potential.
