Despite the increasing interest for canine neonatology many aspects of canine neonatology are still not completely studied and perinatal mortality rates are high. The identification of newborn puppies at high risk at birth/hospitalization is the main goal in advancing veterinary neonatology, as well as the improvement of newborn assessment protocols. The identification of at risk puppies should rely on objective indicators of severity, allowing a differentiated clinical assistance according to neonatal conditions and allowing canine perinatal mortality reduce. This paper presents and discuss the neonatal severity indicators presently useful in the dog, as demonstrated by the specific scientific literature. Among them, some can be used only at birth, others only during the subsequent neonatal period and some useful at both times. Despite the availability of some useful severity indicators, the development of severity score systems are considered necessary also in dogs as in humans. keywords: dog, newborn, severity indicators, outcome

At mating or artificial insemination, sperm begin their movement towards the site of fertilization. However, most sperm are lost due to retrograde flow and very few ultimately reach the upper oviduct where fertilization occurs. The complex structure of the oviduct functions to store sperm, to increase their lifespan, and to release and move sperm towards the oocytes in the ampulla. To accomplish this feat, the oviduct has complex folds that provide direction to sperm, waves of fluid that carry sperm and also provide sperm direction, adhesive glycans that retain sperm in the isthmus, and a signaling sperm to promote sperm release from the isthmus for fertilization. A better understanding of how the oviduct accomplishes these goals will likely lead to improved sperm storage and release and enhanced fertility.

In the feline species, progestins, GnRH agonist implants and melatonin implants are the three main non-surgical contraceptive approaches that are important to discuss today. When available, those can actually come handy in many clinical situations when surgery cannot be performed or should be avoided. To date though, those only offer short to medium term options. Research using gene therapy is however on its way, with encouraging preliminary results. A long term alternative using this technology might become available in the future, changing how we approach contraception in cats in our veterinary clinics.
