Agriculture is the second most important industry in Florida having a market value of over $7.35 billion. In the United States, only 1.3% of the population works in agriculture and the average age of a farmer is 57.5 yr old, which supports a need for youth to pursue careers in agricultural fields. Despite the importance of this industry, there is a growing disconnect between the public and agriculture as demonstrated by low agricultural literacy levels. An outreach program and pre- and postsurveys were used to gain a better understanding of the need for agricultural literacy educational programs in Florida. Outreach curricula were designed on four topics related to agricultural literacy; ‘Plant Biosecurity: Local and Global Perspectives’, ‘Invasive Species that Affect Plants’, ‘Introduction to Entomology’, and ‘Florida Agriculture: Current Issues and Potential Careers’. Over 2 yr, interactive outreach events were held in 80 classrooms around Florida reaching a total of 2,326 students. Based on survey results, the current agricultural literacy levels in Florida are low. The designed outreach program significantly improved student knowledge levels and increased student interest in agricultural careers/fields.

Changes in grain trading between Russian Far Eastern ports and North America in the late 1980s and early 1990s led to introductions of Lymantria dispar asiatica (Vnukovskij), formerly called the Asian gypsy moth (AGM), and the recognition of a new pathway for its transport. Unlike the pathways commonly used and regulated for commodities and for packaging material containing pest organisms, this presented a unique pathway for AGM. Vessels departing from the Russia Far East transiting to ports on the west coast of the United States (US) and Canada (CA) were infested with life stages of AGM and related species. Upon arrival in North America, eggs oviposited on the surfaces of the ships and its cargo hatched with larvae ballooning to vegetation surrounding port areas leading to the potential establishment of AGM populations. A multi layered monitoring and inspection program was developed to mitigate this risk of introduction, initially for Russian Far Eastern ports, and eventually to include specified areas of other Asian countries. In this article, we summarize and review the integral parts of this mitigation program, which include: risk assessments, AGM monitoring in foreign and domestic ports, vessel cleaning and certification by a government Plant Protection Organization (PPO) or its proxy, AGM surveillance, and eradication of introduced AGM in ports and other areas within the United States and Canada. The uniqueness of this program is characterized by its complexity, which involves coordinated efforts of PPOs, the use of various inspection organizations, and the support of ocean transportation industries.

The distribution of lepidopteran pests in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) is a current knowledge gap limiting accurate prioritization of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) research. Regional characterizations of lepidopteran distribution in soybean are now more than 25 yr old. The goal of this study was to generate a contemporary assessment of the distribution and population persistence of lepidopteran soybean pests. To understand which species are currently infesting soybean and their persistence, we conducted a survey of soybean entomologists with responsibility for approximately 33.6 million hectares of production in 31 U.S. states. Soybean entomologists were asked questions about presence of lepidopteran pests and their persistence in their state. We focused this survey on five lepidopteran pests: corn earworm (Helicoverpa zea Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), green cloverworm (Hypena scabra Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Erebidae), painted lady (Vanessa cardui L.) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), soybean looper (Chrysodeixis includens Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and velvetbean caterpillar (Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Erebidae). Soybean entomologists also provided insight into regionally relevant or sporadic lepidopteran soybean pests. Participants were also questioned about common scouting practices in each state. Results of this survey highlight dissimilar geographic distribution and relative persistence of lepidopteran pests in soybean. Clear differences in occurrence and abundance among species provide important contemporary distributions and persistence estimates. Assessments of scouting practices demonstrate a need to improve IPM adoption in some states. Results of this study and its complementary pest profile (concurrently published in JIPM) provide a contemporary foundation for studies of lepidopteran soybean pests.

The rice stink bug, Oebalus pugnax (Fabricius), is the most important late-season insect pest of rice in the southern United States. Nymphs and adults feed on rice grains, resulting in losses in yield and grain quality. Aspects of the biology, ecology, life history, and chemical ecology have been investigated in southern rice producing states but several outstanding questions remain. Standard economic threshold levels (ETLs) based on sweep net sampling for rice stink bug have been established depending on grain development stage and geographic location. However, recent studies on the relationship between rice stink bug densities, feeding damage, and its economic impacts suggests that changes to ETLs for rice stink bug may be needed. The primary management tactic for controlling rice stink bug infestations is the application of chemical insecticides, but alternative management tactics are needed because of the potential for development of insecticide resistance and impacts on non-target organisms. Biological control appears to be a promising strategy, even though it has remained largely untapped. Future research should focus on the biology, behavior, host plant preference, and chemical ecology of the rice stink bug, knowledge of which will aid in the development of integrated pest management strategies. This review article covers the biology, feeding behavior, sampling techniques, ETLs, management, knowledge gaps, and potential management tactics of rice stink bug.

First Recorded Asian Longhorned Beetle (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) Infestation in the Southern United States

The Asian longhorned beetle [Anoplophora glabripennis (Motschulsky), ALB] was found in Hollywood, SC, in May 2020. This infestation is at least 7-yr old and represents the southernmost infestation in North America. A federally regulated invasive forest and tree pest, ALB primarily attacks maples but is known to attack and reproduce in trees in at least 12 different genera. Damage observed in South Carolina is typical of that seen in other ALB infestations, including oviposition sites, splitting bark around larval feeding sites, and round holes made by emerging adults. Copious weeping from oviposition sites was commonly observed in the summer of 2020, and characteristic frass and wood shavings were commonly exuded from attacked trees. Federal and state regulatory officials established a 152 km2 (58.6 mi2) regulated area in October—which the state increased to 188.0 km2 (72.6 mi2) in January—and to date >4,000 trees (98% Acer spp.) infested with ALB have been identified. Several uncertainties regarding ALB’s biology and ecology exist due to this area’s subtropical climate, including impacts to the beetle’s life cycle. Questions also surround potential biological control agents in this area and whether new host trees would be utilized. While the standard eradication strategy of tree removal and chipping is being performed, there are several forested wetlands and areas otherwise inaccessible to typical removal equipment where alternate eradication strategies may need to be developed and deployed. Because this ALB infestation is located within a novel environment, it provides an opportunity to research new strategies that will help improve future detection and eradication efforts.

This infestation is at least 7-yr old and represents the southernmost infestation in North America. A federally regulated invasive forest and tree pest, ALB primarily attacks maples but is known to attack and reproduce in trees in at least 12 different genera. Damage observed in South Carolina is typical of that seen in other ALB infestations, including oviposition sites, splitting bark around larval feeding sites, and round holes made by emerging adults. Copious weeping from oviposition sites was commonly observed in the summer of 2020, and characteristic frass and wood shavings were commonly exuded from attacked trees. Federal and state regulatory officials established a 152 km2 (58.6 mi2) regulated area in October—which the state increased to 188.0 km2 (72.6 mi2) in January—and to date >4,000 trees (98% Acer spp.) infested with ALB have been identified. Several uncertainties regarding ALB’s biology and ecology exist due to this area’s subtropical climate, including impacts to the beetle’s life cycle. Questions also surround potential biological control agents in this area and whether new host trees would be utilized. While the standard eradication strategy of tree removal and chipping is being performed, there are several forested wetlands and areas otherwise inaccessible to typical removal equipment where alternate eradication strategies may need to be developed and deployed. Because this ALB infestation is located within a novel environment, it provides an opportunity to research new strategies that will help improve future detection and eradication efforts.","PeriodicalId":16119,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Integrated Pest Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.8,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43205071","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
