Hybrid microcapsules (H-MCs) are being developed for the column separation of Cs from high-level radioactive liquid waste (HLLW). In this paper, adsorption behavior of H-MCs has been evaluated by a batch method in single-element solution and a spent fuel solution prepared from irradiated MOX fuel. The spent fuel solution contain FPs and minor actinide (MAs), not containing U and Pu. Distribution coefficients ( K d ) of various metal ion including Cs were determined for three types of H-MCs (AMP-SG (silica gel enclosing ammonium molybdophosphate), AMP-ALG (calcium alginate gel enclosing ammonium molybdophosphate) and AWP-ALG (calcium alginate gel enclosing ammonium tungstophosphate)) in the spent fuel solution. The three types of H-MCs exhibited higher K d s for Cs than those for the other elements in spent fuel solution. The difference of K d for the specific element (Cs) and the other elements was larger than one order of magnitude. Therefore, chromatographic separation of Cs in the spent fuel solution using a column packed with H-MCs will be achieved. It was the similar tendency between the spent fuel solution and the single-element solution that the K d value for Cs of AWP-ALG was the largest among those of three gels. Thus, the mechanism of adsorption of Cs onto these H-MCs would not be changed in the presence of FPs and MAs. Therefore, these types of H-MCs can be effective for separation of Cs in the spent solutions.

For novel selective separation and recovery of uranium which is necessary for utilization of atomic energy, research development was systematically carried out for monoamide resins aiming to selectively separate uranium(VI) species from acidic nitric acid solutions. Some synthetic resins were found to selectively separate U(VI) from other metal ions. It was also found that two kinds of adsorption sites contribute to the adsorption of monoamide resins to U(VI). For stability, resistance against heating of cyclic monoamide resins was found negligible for normal use. In addition, it was clarified that the route for radiolitic degradation by γ -ray is pronouncedly different between chain-type resins and cyclic-type ones.

The author has studied on solvent extraction separation of metal ions, focusing on development and separation ability analysis of various polydentate ligands as extractants, and functional analysis of ionic liquids (ILs) as novel extraction solvents. This paper presents an outline of the authors’ fruits of research on separation ability of pendant-arm-type polydentate ligands and sulfonamide-type polydentate ligands, evaluation of charge of extracted species in IL chelate extraction, development of IL triphasic extraction system, and possible use of hydrophilic ILs as salting-out phase separation agent.

Many kinfs of chemical operations are required in the nuclear engineering field, regardless fission or fusion engineerings. The chemical filed supported in this nuclear engineering is called as the nuclear energy chemistry. The nuclide separation and isotope separation are ones of the most important and most necessary techniques for the nuclear fuel cycle engineering, the reactor chemical engineering, etc. among the nuclear engineering field. I have been studing the application of ion exchange to the nuclide separation and the isotope separation in the nuclear energy chemisty. In the present paper, this application is introduced.
