Owl monkeys (Aotus spp.) are the only nocturnal simian primates, and as such, they are very different from other nonhuman primate species. Despite owl monkeys being used as an animal model to study malaria for over 50 years, there is not much information about their requirements in captivity compared to other primate species commonly used in biomedical research. Adaptation to a nocturnal life implies changes in the biology of the species, changes that are not seen in diurnal nonhuman primates. Here we briefly review the physiology, immunology, reproduction, and environmental requirements of the owl monkey in hopes it will provide guidance to animal care personnel and investigators when designing housing and managing this invaluable species in captivity.

Pitted keratolysis, a dermatologic condition in humans, was diagnosed in an olive baboon (Papio anubis) via biopsy and responded well to topical treatment. In humans, pitted keratolysis is caused by the overgrowth of keratinolytic bacteria within the stratum corneum. This represents the first reported case in a nonhuman primate.

Brazil harbors the greatest diversity of primates, and among them, the genus Callithrix is notable for its adaptation to urban environments. Despite being endemic to southern Bahia and northeastern Minas Gerais, the Wied's marmoset (Callithrix kuhlii) remains understudied, highlighting the need for baseline health data. This study aimed to characterize the hematological and biochemical profiles of C. kuhlii in urban and peri-urban areas within its distribution range. A total of 106 wild marmosets were captured, and blood samples were collected from the femoral plexus of the individuals. Hematological parameters showed no significant differences between sexes. However, sex-based variations were observed in serum biochemistry, with males showing higher triglycerides and urea levels, possibly influenced by dietary factors and testosterone. This pioneering study establishes essential baseline data on the hematology and biochemistry parameters of C. kuhlii in the wild, supporting future research on its ecology and conservation within the Atlantic Forest.

Leontopithecus chrysomelas is a neotropical primate in danger of extinction and its ex-situ maintenance is one of the species' conservation and preservation strategies. Knowledge of biological standards of normality, such as hematological and biochemical analytes, provides valuable information on the animals' state of health and aids in the diagnosis of diseases.

Methods

Blood samples from 65 individuals of the species L. chrysomelas were collected and analyzed for complete blood count analytes and biochemical analytes. Each variable was statistically analyzed according to the ASVCP guidelines and compared between the sexes.

Results

This study provides hematological and biochemical reference values for L. chrysomelas under humane care. Statistical differences were observed between the sexes in hematological and biochemical analytes. Differences were observed in hemoglobinometry and mean corpuscular volume (MCV), in which males showed higher values (p < 0.05). Considering the biochemical analytes, the males of L. chrysomelas showed higher alkaline phosphatase values compared to the females (p < 0.05).

Conclusions

Our study provides the first reports of hematological and biochemical reference values for L. chrysomelas ex-situ. The normal ranges described can be used for the management, diagnosis, monitoring, and disease prevention of animals in similar conditions.

Different studies have indicated that there is a high prevalence of neoplasms in nonhuman primates; however, in Platyrrhini species, and especially in South American species, the available information is very scarce. The black howler monkey (Alouatta caraya) is the most widely distributed species in northeastern Argentina. In this contribution, we report an adult male individual of A. caraya with an important maxillofacial lesion whose morphological and radiographic characteristics allow us to diagnose it as the first record of a desmoplastic ameloblastoma in this species. The occurrence of this benign neoplasm raises the need to increase population monitoring, as well as the postmortem analysis of the different carcasses recovered from the different regions inhabited by this species.

Introduction

Gastric cancer (GC) remains among the top five global health problems. Therefore, comprehending the tumor energetic behavior is critical to understanding its progression. This study aimed to investigate mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) alterations in GC cancer cell lines in an animal model.

Material and Methods

Four mitochondrial genes (COI, ATP8, ND1, and ND3) were analyzed in GC (AGP01, ACP02, ACP03, and PG100) and control (Walker 256 carcinosarcoma) cell lines inoculated in Sapajus apella, exposed and not exposed to N-methyl-N-nitrosourea.

Results

Two synonymous alterations were identified in ND1. In ND3, a non-synonymous alteration (A10398G ➔ Thr114Ala) may decrease the respiratory chain Complex I efficiency, enhancing cellular reactive oxygen species and contributing to mtDNA damage. As alterations in ND1 and ND3 were observed in highly aggressive cell lines, our results suggest these genes may play crucial roles in energetic efficiency and gastric carcinogenesis.

Common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) are a New World nonhuman primate (NHP) whose popularity as a research model continues to expand. Marmosets were identified as the predominant NHP species that is susceptible to spontaneous Pseudomonas infections based on a 27-year survey in a primate colony, encompassing several NHP species. 26 common marmosets were retrospectively identified and evaluated for spontaneous Pseudomonas spp. infections. Clinical symptoms included lethargy, weight loss, gastrointestinal issues (diarrhea, bloating, vomiting, poor appetite), increased respiratory effort, and difficulty urinating. Affected organs (larynx, lungs, liver, gallbladder, intestines, colon, uterus, and urinary bladder) appeared discolored, distended, or enlarged. Microscopic findings included inflammatory infiltrates, edema, necrosis, hemorrhage, and pseudomembranous lesions. Only animals with clinical symptoms or gross evidence of bacterial infection were cultured; therefore, the actual incidence of Pseudomonas spp. infections is unknown. We present the common and uncommon lesions associated with Pseudomonas infections in the common marmoset.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a malignant form of urogenital cancer that arises from renal tubular epithelial cells. Here, we describe a case of renal cell carcinoma in a common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus). Immunohistochemistry demonstrated positive reactivity for PAX8 and CD10 in the renal neoplasm. We review 115 cases of spontaneous renal tumors in nonhuman primates (NHP) reported in the literature and from the Southwest National Primate Research Center records. Across all NHPs, malignant renal neoplasms were more frequent than benign. There appears to be a male sex predilection for renal tumors in baboons. This is the first reported case of renal cell carcinoma in a marmoset.
