A three-level wye shunt active power filter based on a predictive current controller and line voltage space vector modulation is presented and analyzed. This control scheme treats the non-ideal load as a pure resistive load and compensates the reactive power and harmonics under both ideal and non- ideal conditions, thus the power quality at point of common couplings is improved. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach, and also reveal the limitation of wye structure APF.

Potential and strength of surface electric field distribution have strongly influence on breakdown voltage and reliability of power semiconductor devices. Potential distribution can be determined by different field-limiting ring and field plate design which can be described by solving Poisson's equation in one dimension briefly. In this paper, the influence of design factors such as spacing between main junction and ring, ring width, and field plate width on potential and strength of surface electric field distribution are analyzed. From the simulation results, the relationship between those factors and potential and strength of surface electric field distribution can be found. Understanding the effect of design factors upon the junction termination edge, multi field-limiting rings and field plates of high breakdown power devices can be designed.

In order to extend the speed range of a brushless DC motor drive, it is common to control the phase current to lead the phase back EMF by an "advance angle". It is based on the "phase advance approach", which was proposed for brushless DC motor drive in 1995. This paper completes the "phase advance approach" theory in several aspects: a) the stator resistance is taken into account in the analysis and calculation of phase reference current; b) the situation where the back EMF is smaller than the applied voltage is also taken into consideration; and c) an analytical equation to calculate the advance angle is also derived. The obtained equation are therefore more general than those in the prior art. Extended simulation results demonstrate the validity of the approach.

The structure and operation principle of a novel hybrid excitation claw-pole synchronous machine (HECSM) are introduced. The field-control capability based on the equivalent magnetic circuit method is analyzed. A 3D finite element analysis (FEA) is used to analyze no-load magnetic field distributions, air-gap flux, phase flux linkage and back EMF variation for different field currents. Furthermore, torque characteristics of the HECSM for different field currents are explored. A 2 kW prototype is manufactured, and the experiment for field-control capability is carried out. Experimental results coincide well with those of FEA. The experimental and FEA results indicate that the flux of the HECSM can be adjusted in a wide range with a relatively low field current.

A novel auxiliary diagnosis method for state-of-health (SOH) of a lead-acid battery unit is proposed in this paper. This method is based on the concept that the discharging curve for a health battery unit is smooth, however, the degradation of battery unit caused by the internal cell shorts, shorted cells open or the cell reversal will distort the discharging curve. Some experimental results are carried out to verify the proposed SOH diagnosis method. The experimental results show that the proposed method has the expected performance.

The papers presents methodologies for the analysis of 4th-order LCLC resonant power converters operating at 2.63 MHz as fluorescent lamp ballasts, where high frequency operation facilitates capacitive discharge into the tube, with near resonance operation at high load quality factor enabling high efficiency. State-variable dynamic descriptions of the converter are employed to rapidly determine the steady-state cyclic behaviour of the ballast during nominal operation. Simulation and experimental measurements from a prototype ballast circuit driving a 60 cm, 8W T5 fluorescent lamp are also included.

This article presents for the first time the differential equations of the complete loading characteristics of three phase axial flux permanent magnet synchronous machine (AFPMSM) with broad air-gap. It shows that this characteristic leads to algebraic differential equations (ADE), which we know recently, the properties and integrated numerical means. These equations are governed by a multidistributed value problem (MDVP) which makes this problem a difficult numerical one, non accessible by traditional solvers. This article shows thanks to the properties of Ck spline functions that we can integrated such problems by judicious choices of the initial vectors and simulated annealing methods. The first results of simulations will be given.

This paper presents the automated design of resonant controllers for current control of three phase shunt active filters. The design methods employs a Genetic Algorithm (GA) based routine. The resonant control compensator is introduced in order to improve the control accuracy and performance for AC input signals. An accurate harmonic current control for shunt active filters can be achieved using resonant compensators. In this paper, the current control system is designed to operate with a single dq reference frame, synchronous with the 50 Hz supply voltage, for the compensation of all main harmonic currents, 5th, 7th, 11th and 13th. The design procedure and the principle of the proposed control method are presented. Experimental results confirm the accuracy and effectiveness of the GA-designed compensators, showing excellent harmonic current tracking performance.

In applications with high torque requirements an outer-rotor design has several advantages compared to an inner- rotor one. A feasibility study of both designs for an in-wheel direct drive application is presented. The torque density depending on slot area, fill factor and air gap radius is analyzed. The influence of cooling on the torque capability of the inner- and outer-rotor machine is shown. A comparison of the thermal behavior will show if the cooling of the outer-rotor machine is adequate for high torque applications. Finite element simulations, linked with analytical software are used to calculate and compare the torque of the machines.

This paper will develop a color measurement system that can describe the relation between device-dependent color space and device-independent color space. From the color theory, the relation might have some nonlinear phenomena. The nonlinear relation can be described by using the neural network with learning process. The back propagation algorithm is used for the learning process. The output of the neural network will provide color coordinate transformation. Therefore, the color chromaticity of the LCD can then be determined.
