Purpose - The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of logistics efficiency and Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) on trade between South Korea and G-20 countries, and derive policy implications based on the analysis results. Design/Methodology/Approach - In this study, we analyze the impact of logistics efficiency and FTAs on trade using the gravity model, which is a model that explains the ‘normal’ size of trade between nations. This study adopts varying coefficient models, such as the random effects model and fixed effects model in order to more effectively analyze unobservable factors in the panel data. The results of the Hausman test suggest that a fixed effects model is appropriate. Findings - The estimated coefficient for the FTA variable is 0.124, and it is statistically significant at the 1% significance level. The estimated coefficient for the logistics efficiency variable is positive (+) and statistically significant. South Korea’s estimated logistics efficiency coefficient is 1.191, which is significant at the 10% significance level, and the estimated coefficient for the trading partner’s logistics efficiency is 0.619, which is also significant at the 10% significance level. Research Implications - In order to increase a country’s trade volume, it is necessary not only to improve its own logistics efficiency but also to enhance the logistics systems of its trading partners. Furthermore, since the implementation of FTAs is expected to have a positive impact on trade expansion, there is a need to be more proactive in pursuing FTA agreements with non-signatory countries.

Purpose - This study empirically analyzes the impact of intimacy, passion, and commitment on information sharing and logistics performance within inter-company relationships in the supply chain. Design/Methodology/Approach - We adopted the triangular theory of love and established a research model on the assumption that these elements of human relationships—intimacy, passion, and commitment—lead to information sharing and improved logistics performance. To examine their correlations, a survey was administered among professionals in supply chain-related departments in South Korea. Subsequently, we tested hypotheses through structural equation modeling using SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0. Findings - We found that all the components of the triangular theory of love—intimacy, passion, and commitment—significantly positively impacted information sharing. Moreover, we confirmed that information sharing significantly positively impacts logistics performance, which can represent supply chain performance. Research Implications - Based on these results, the following conclusions can be drawn: To form new business relationships and measure performance, fundamental human relationships between supply chain participants are crucial, as is the development of tools to quantitatively measure these relationships. For quantitative performance, information sharing based on human relationships is necessary. Therefore, as qualitative relationships and quantitative performance are increasing proportionally, supply chain participants must recognize their importance.

Purpose - This study reviews the corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities of Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) companies involved in scandals. Additionally, we study Chaebol companies’ CSR activities of involved in the scandal and analyzes how much Chaebol companies with scandals spend on charitable donations. Design/Methodology/Approach - We exploit 11,975 firm-years listed on the Korea Exchange from 2001 to 2021, using the KOSPI firms as samples. We estimate the multiple regression model to test hypotheses. Also, we construct a one-to-one matching sample using the propensity score matching method to overcome endogeneity problems and to check the robustness. Findings - The analysis finds that companies with scandals donate more than those without. In addition, among these companies, Chaebol companies with scandals tend to spend less on donations. Research Implications - When corporate scandals occur, listed companies in Korea Exchange try to improve their image by actively engaging in CSR activities. However, Chaebol companies are not likely to engage in vigorous CSR activities even during scandals. The ethical level of a company can be inferred through its donation activities, depending on the situation.

Purpose - This research aimed to delve into the intricate relationship between government ownership and the corporate sustainability of firms operating within emerging economies, with a particular focus on several key firm-level characteristics such as international experience, the foreign backgrounds of top management teams, and capacity in research and development (R&D). By examining these attributes, the research sought to provide insights into the pivotal role that ownership type plays in shaping the sustainable performance of firms in emerging markets. Design/Methodology/Approach - This study empirically investigated Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance and firm-level characteristics of Chinese listed manufacturing firms from 2010 to 2018. Findings - The empirical results showed that government ownership had a significant positive impact on the ESG performance of emerging-market firms, and that the international experience of the firms as well as top manager overseas experience further strengthened this relationship, whereas their inputs in R&D showed no significant influence. Research Implications - This paper examined the impact of government ownership identity on firm sustainability outcomes. Our findings reveal significant distinctions in ESG performance between state-owned and privately-owned firms. This study contributes to corporate sustainability literature by investigating the influence of organizational ownership identity and firm-specific heterogeneity on ESG outcome within the emerging economy context.

Purpose - This study investigated the Energy-Environmental Kuznets Curve (EEKC) hypothesis with a focus on energy security. The main purpose of this study is to verify the validity of EEKC and emphasize the importance of the relationship between energy security and sustainability. Design/Methodology/Approach - In this study, panel data analysis was conducted on 40 countries (22 OECD countries and 18 non-OECD countries) from 2000 to 2019. In particular, ridge regression analysis was applied to address multi-collinearity among explanatory variables. Findings - First, this study emphasized that the level of income and the type of energy consumption by country are important factors in the validity of the EEKC hypothesis. Second, for OECD countries, there was a U-shaped relationship between total energy consumption and petroleum consumption with economic growth, while for non-OECD countries, a U-shaped relationship was observed in natural gas and electricity consumption. Third, the improvement of the energy security index for both total and non-OECD countries resulted in a decrease in energy consumption, whereas for OECD countries, the positive effects of the energy security index were limited to total energy consumption and petroleum consumption. Research Implications - While regulations and policies for controlling CO2 emissions are important, more proactive policies for energy consumption, which can be considered a more fundamental cause of environmental pollution, are needed. In addition, harmonious policies for energy security and sustainable development should be supported.

Purpose - This study aims to analyze the application of domestic economic norms beyond national boundaries from the perspective of international trade law, with a focus on the United States' extension of its domestic economic norms to other countries, particularly considering the expanding use of economic sanctions under pretexts such as security and environmental concerns. Design/Methodology/Approach - The research adopts a legal analysis approach, evaluating the issue of the extraterritorial application of domestic laws concerning economic norms within the framework of international trade law. The study considers recent instances where the United States has employed economic sanctions justified by security and environmental concerns against other nations, and assesses the legal mechanisms that facilitate this extension, aiming to evaluate associated risks and propose strategic responses. Findings - The study finds that the United States has increasingly applied its domestic economic norms beyond its borders, using justifications such as security and environmental concerns. This has led to the establishment of new trade barriers and a growing atmosphere of protectionism on the international stage. Research Implications - The study emphasizes the need for urgent evaluation and strategic planning by nations, including Korea, to tackle the implications of applying domestic economic laws beyond borders. It calls for in-depth analyses, especially in international trade law, to understand the growing reach of these applications and the impact on global trade dynamics. Additionally, proactive approaches and thorough legal assessments are recommended to navigate and respond effectively to this changing legal landscape.

Purpose - An exchange market pressure index (EMP) exhibits not only exchange-rate fluctuations but also the changes of government tools to manage exchange rates. Therefore, it is useful to estimate hidden pressures that exist in foreign exchange markets. This study suggests a new EMP that might have more information on foreign exchange markets than other indices. Design/Methodology/Approach - We include a capital-flow management (CFM) measure as another component in our new EMP to consider the role of CFMs for managing exchange rates. This new index is then applied to the four Asian countries of South Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, and Japan to analyze their foreign exchange markets. Findings - We found that the new EMP sends stronger signals before and during the currency crises than existing indices. Moreover, the volatility of emerging market EMP is stronger than that of advanced countries because the former group changes CFM policies more frequently than the latter . These findings suggest that the new EMP might describe exchange rates and pressures in foreign exchange markets better than other indices. Research Implications - To our best knowledge, this study is one of few attempts to incorporate CFM measures into an EMP to consider the effectiveness of CFMs in managing exchange rates.

Purpose - This study aims to estimate the effects of the Association of South-East Asian Nations Free Trade Area (AFTA) on international trade in Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) Design/Methodology/Approach - This study empirically analyzes the effects of AFTA on Lao PDR’s intra-regional trade with ASEAN countries using a gravity model by employing panel data from ten ASEAN countries from 1990 to 2017.
Findings - This paper finds that joining AFTA positively affects aggregate trade volume and exports of Lao PDR. However, joining AFTA does not positively impact Lao PDR’s imports.
Research Implications - With a very limited number of studies on the effect of AFTA on Lao PDR, most previous studies examine the effect on Lao PDR using a subset of ASEAN countries. This paper contributes to the literature by being the first to empirically analyze the effect of AFTA on intra-regional trade in Lao PDR with all ten ASEAN member countries. The findings of the study suggest that further extending FTA networks with other countries will promote Lao PDR’s trade and its access to the international market.

Design/Methodology/Approach - In this study, data were collected through a questionnaire based on previous studies. Descriptive statistical analysis, reliability analysis, validity analysis, correlation, and other statistical analysis were performed on the sample data collected from the questionnaire using SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 26.0.
Findings - It was empirically analyzed that the quality of logistics service of delivery agencies have a significant effect on customer satisfaction. Perceived value was empirically analyzed to play a mediating role in the influence relationship between the logistics services of delivery agencies and customer satisfaction.
Research Implications - The tick size reduction was consistent and supports previous research from different countries. The bid-ask spread, ask depth, and bid depth significantly decreased, the trading volume had a tendency to increase as well, although it was not significant. For IDX and Bapepam, additional information related to changes that occurred as a result of the implementation of the new policy in stock trading was noted. Investors can use the information from this study to make investment decisions. This study was able to obtain 169 samples during 90 day observation period. Furthermore, this study used multiple statistic methods that give robust results to accept or reject the hypotheses.
