We have implemented a remote control system based on mobile agents on embedded MPU also used in mobile telephones. Agents can move around appliances and autonomously continue inter-appliance operations without the remote controller.

This paper discusses a photodiode/preamplifier IC designed for optical data storage systems. The IC consists of eight photodiodes with programmable gain stages. With the chosen topology high signal bandwidth is achieved in combination with the capability to handle large dynamic signal ranges. The PDIC is made in a standard available IC process.

We present a new scalable three-stage motion estimation technique that allows scaling of the computational effort and memory bandwidth usage by a factor of 14. At full processing, our technique slightly outperforms a 128 /spl times/ 128 full search motion estimation.

In this paper we present a hard disk drive embedded digital satellite receiver with scene change detection for video indexing. This receiver can store, retrieve and classify the broadcast data by implementing an interface between the conventional digital satellite receiver and digital storage media. Using this system, a user can obtain more information for efficient video retrieval.

In this paper we incorporate multiple ROI coding and data embedded functionalities into the SPIHT codec with the reversible two-ten integer wavelet transform, and propose two improvement schemes of the SPIHT algorithm and utilize a context-based adaptive arithmetic coder to further enhance coding efficiency. Each ROI has individual ellipse or rectangle shape model and possesses its own priority (reconstruction speed). The priority decides the order of processing for the coefficients at encoder and decoder In addition, we propose a method called Odd and Even Number Attachment (OENA) to embed data. The data can be a meaningful image or useful text for some special applications such as digital cameras and digital libraries. We implement a remote monitor system to integrate all techniques. In this system, the luminance is compressed by an improved SPIHT codec, and the chrominance is embedded into the bitstream by OENA. The guarder can decide to use ROI or not, and the bit-rates to transmit to network.

The performance of a wireless applications protocol (WAP) network configuration supporting end-to-end security is evaluated under varying wireless and Internet conditions. A baseline configuration that does not support end-to-end security is also evaluated for comparisons. Based on the results, recommendations are made for choosing a particular configuration for providing WAP services.

As more and more multimedia content is delivered and stored in the MPEG compressed format, there is an increasing need for compressed domain manipulation techniques. We introduce an efficient method to perform spatial domain scaling of MPEG video. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme is faster than the current compressed domain processes while having a comparable subjective quality.

An image mosaicing algorithm for video indexing is presented with efficient and robust automatic scene segmentation. Phase correlation and motion compensation are used for image mosaicing and scene segmentation. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is fast, robust and efficient for scene-based video indexing.
