This paper describes a new approach to a hybrid ARQ based MAC protocol scheme to be integrated in a MAC (medium access control) LSI, which is devised for a dedicated wireless AV transmission system over the IEEE802.11b physical layer (PHY). This system is now commercially available with the name of "Smartlink".

This paper presents a blind data hiding technique in still images. The cover image is de-correlated by using the key. The error control channel coding is introduced into the data hiding scheme. The message encrypted is encoded with a turbo coder. The one-way hash function is used in the embedding process. The algorithm for hiding bit selection is proposed and an experimental implementation of the algorithm is presented.

We propose a new communication technique, which is named the brain model hyper communication mechanism for groupware. The mechanism mimics brain processing. The sending mechanism sends almost all kinds of data of the environment. The receiving mechanism integrates and processes the data selectively and hierarchically. We developed a prototype based on the mechanism and applied it to a collaboration game. The prototype has video, voice, and touch of sense communication channels. The results of an experiment were evaluated and showed comparatively high value when we used the touch of sense detection system.

In this paper, a new control network protocol, HNCP (home network control protocol), is proposed for controlling and monitoring home appliances. HNCP is a four-layered protocol and the standard message set is specified to guarantee interoperability between different home appliances and vendors. HNCP also specifies a detailed device-modem interface structure that guarantees the flexibility of modems.

This paper presents a systematic method of probing channel characteristics and communication reliabilities of home power line communication network applied to the Internet accessed control of home appliances. The effects of the three performance deteriorating factors, i.e., additive noise, channel attenuation, and intersymbol interference, can be systematically measured by applying the channel probing waveform in the frequency range from 100 kHz to 450 kHz. Probability of bit error is derived with the probed channel parameters of the signal attenuation, noise and signal-to-interference ratio read in the frequency domain. The agreement between the derived probability of bit error and the measured probability of bit error supports the validity of the proposed approach of probing home power line channel characteristics. The experimental results performed with the constructed testbed applying the proposed channel probing method also support the feasibility of commercially deploying the PLC modem installed home appliances and their services for the Internet accessed home automation.

Car navigation systems have been evolving since the first type GPS navigation system was launched. The increasing amount of map data and related information have been stored on CD-ROM disks and DVD-ROM disks. In the latest HDD navigation system, the map data is stored on HDD, so the driver can operate navigation and the passenger in the rear seats can enjoy watching DVD-video at the same time. We describe the basic technologies of the HDD car navigation system that has many functions for operating as a navigation and music server. The functions provided by the system include a three-dimensional map using a geometry engine on a graphic display controller (GDC), route guidance, voice recognition of the navigation commands and encoding and decoding of music stored on the HDD.

Non-integrating CMOS image sensors have a higher dynamic range than alternative designs, making them more suitable for automotive applications. Unfortunately, gain and offset non-uniformities in the photosensors and active elements on the focal plane generate fixed-pattern noise in the received image, limiting the resolution and sensitivity of the vision system. We present a solution based on an adaptive algorithm for online correction of spatial non-uniformity. Furthermore, we demonstrate on-chip intensity histogram equalization by using the same adaptive algorithm and we achieve high bandwidth without compromising the gain output by using a native transistor. In order to prove our concept, a VLSI prototype has been realized using 0.35 /spl mu/m CMOS technology.

This paper provides an overview of DOCSIS 2.0, the main objective of which is to achieve a significant increase in upstream bandwidth, while providing more robustness against channel impairments. This has been achieved through inclusion of an enhanced physical layer that supports higher order modulations with increased forward error correction capabilities.

This paper describes a multi-channel G.723.1 Annex A (G.723.1A) implementation focused on code optimization using a general purpose digital signal processor (DSP), TMS320C62x (C62x). To implement a multi-channel G.723.1A, complexity of the ITU-T C-code was analyzed. Then we sorted and optimized C functions in complexity order. In parallel with optimization, we verified the bit-exactness of the optimized code using the ITU-T test vectors. Using only internal memory, the optimized code can perform full-duplex 16 channel processing. In addition, we further increased the number of available channels per DSP using fast algorithms, referred to as bit-compatible optimization.
