In this paper we describe an architecture for a multi-client, multi-channel video streaming server targeted at the security market. To obtain scalability in bit-rate, multiple compressed video streams are available for each video channel. For transmission to the user, one stream has to be selected for each video channel. Parameters and cost functions to derive the optimal set of streams are defined and heuristic algorithms to find the best combination of video streams are introduced.

The low bit-rate profiles of the MPEG-4 standard enable video-streaming for mobile Consumer Electronics (CE) and computing devices. Prediction of the system behavior is a critical issue for the implementation of such applications on a resource-limited (e.g. mobile) platform. The high complexity of the MPEG-4 standard (e.g. the shape-texture decoding) and the resulting dynamic allocation of resources are conflicting with resource limitations. For implementation, we explore a multiprocessor architecture, because it enables an efficient mapping combined with low power consumption. In this paper, we focus on a detailed analysis of the dynamic behavior and bandwidth, using an earlier proposed linear parametrical computation model (1). The analysis reveals that the actual average bandwidth requirements are about 2.5 times lower than the worst-case estimation. As a consequence of the resulting bandwidth, an additional video stream may be decoded on the average with the same target platform, though control may be needed for worst-case situations 1 .

Parallel sequence spread spectrrim PSSS pro1ides a physical layer for RF data communication. It is based on an overlap of cyclically shified binary spreading sequences modulated with Mary PAM. QAM and PSK. Coding, modulation and channel equa1ization can be integrated and allow a flexiable tradeoff hetween data rate, energy efficiency and multipath fading resistonce at a low electronic complexity. This paper describes the principles of the transmission procedure including the spreading, overlap and modulation. Some results are shown from AWGN-channels with different modulation procedurers.

Blocking artifacts may appear in block based digital image and video coding systems like JPEG and MPEG, especially when compression is done at a low bit-rate. The blocking artifacts can degrade the perceived image quality. In this paper, a method for reducing the blocking artifacts in the decoded image using adaptive filters is proposed. The selection of the proper filter is based on the local image pattern and/or the relative pixel position in the coding block. The results show a significant image quality improvement. To evaluate the methods, both Mean Square Error (MSE) scores and Block-edge Impairment Metric (BIM) are given for objective comparison. Screen shots are also shown to demonstrate the subjective quality.
