The construction of a simple detector enabling the Stereoscan Mk II to be operated as a scanning transmission electron microscope is described. Using the microscope in this transmissive mode, sections of biological materials have been satisfactorily studied at resolving powers of 9 nm and better.

The construction is described of a simple device by which the fluorescence of very thin liquid layers can be measured. The effect of finite absorbance on the fluorescence yield of the layer is calculated, and compared with experimental values obtained by varying the thickness of a layer containing both fluorescent and absorbing components.

A thermoluminescent dosemeter reader is described which incorporates autoranging facilities, automatic tray vibration and fixed period nitrogen-flushing. The print-out is automatic and thus the reader is suitable for use by semi-skilled personnel.

A computer-linked microdensitometer has been constructed by fitting a stage with cross-slides driven by impulse motors to a commercial projection microscope. Its accuracy and speed are compared with those of a cathode-ray-tube microdensitometer. The procedure and requirements for analysing x-ray photographs from biological fibres are described.

A pump which delivers from 0?01 to 0?65 ml fluid per beat at a frequency of 10-80 beats per min is described. Consecutive discharges agree within 1?5% of the average. Pumping is achieved by rhythmically compressing an elastic tube which has one-way valves at either end. Compression is achieved by oil pressure and controlled by an electronic regulator. This pump surpasses other micropumps with regard to precision, lack of hemolysis and versatility of capacity, frequency and pressure profile.

An electromagnetic modification of the Zimm-Crothers rotating inner cylinder viscometer is described. This modification replaces the motor-driven permanent magnets with the stator section of an a.c. induction motor. This means that the operating shear stress, and hence shear rate, may be varied simply by altering the magnitude of the alternating current flowing through the induction motor stator. This modified apparatus is ideal for the study of non-Newtonian behaviour in polymers at very low shear rates. At extremely low shear rates the expected thixotropic build up of structure in solutions of high molecular weight calf thymus and bacteriophage DNA can be detected, but this structure rapidly breaks down as the shear rate is increased.
