The evolution of the present Colour Index is discussed with reference to nineteenth and early twentieth century English, German and French classifications, as well as to previous editions of the Index. Details of the first, second and third editions are described and comments made on future developments. Based on lectures given at meetings of the Bradford Student Section, the West Riding Region jointly with the Leeds Student Section, the Manchester Student Section, and the Midlands Region of the Society of Dyers and Colourists.

The testing of light fastness of dyeings against standards such as those originated by the Society is considered. It is shown that in practice certain anomalies are found, since the sample and dyeing do not necessarily follow the same course of fading. The discrepancies are examined on the basis of simple theory, and certain recommendations are made in respect of the practice of light–fastness testing. The influence of quality of light, atmosphere, and mixture of dyes is discussed.

The aramid fabrics Technora and Conex, dyed with CI Disperse Yellow 54, CI Disperse Red 60 and CI Disperse Blue 56, were treated with sputter etching and argon low-temperature plasma. The colour depth of Technora was considerably increased by sputter etching, whereas that of Conex was not. Changes in colour were investigated by the L*, C*, h colour system. The increase in colour depth due to sputter etching was greatly dependent on the decrease of metric lightness L* and the increase of metric chroma C*.
