ABSTRACTThe present work deals with the synthesis of environment friendly Gum tragacanth, acrylic acid and methacrylic acid based interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) using potassium persulfate-ascorbic acid as an initiator and glutaraldehyde as cross-linker. The structure and morphology of the synthesized IPN was confirmed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM of synthesizeation of IPN showed morphological variations from the backbone due to grafting of poly(acrylic acid) chains and interpenetrating of poly(methacrylic acid) chain onto Gum tragacanth. The nature of synthesized IPN was determined through X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. Synthesized IPN was used for the controlled release of potassium chloride, potassium nitrate and urea in the soil. The results showed that synthesized IPN released 1096.45 ppm potassium chloride, 757.11 ppm potassium nitrate and 816.86 ppm urea after 40 hours; this showed slow release of fertilizer for prolonged time, wh...

ABSTRACTWith the development of modern industry, heavy metal pollution is increasingly becoming the focus of government and citizen concern around the globe. Some heavy metals such as Pb, Hg, As, Cr and Cd are highly toxic and hazardous to the human health due to their non-biodegradable nature even at lower levels of exposure. Therefore, it is extremely important and necessary to develop effective and accurate techniques for the detection of heavy metal ions. In this review, various electrochemical sensors for the determination of heavy metal ions are introduced, including electrochemical enzyme sensor, electrochemical immunosensor, electrochemical nucleic acid sensor, the electrochemical whole cell biosensor, imprinted sensor and novel nanomaterial modified electrochemical sensors. The advancements in the techniques of detecting heavy metals and the future development trends of these methods are discussed.

ABSTRACTThe need to develop a foundry sand binder that will be less expensive and also not toxic has received great attention in recent times. Sand, which is the principal moulding material in the foundry shop, is usually prepared with binders in the production of moulds and cores. Most of the binders presently used in the foundry industry in Nigeria are imported, very expensive, though generally effective. These binders which include furan, urea and phenol formaldehyde resins are not ecofriendly and usually emit toxic air pollutants.
