THE OZONE LAYER IN SIBERIA FROM INFRARED-BAND SATELLITE IMAGERY 西伯利亚的臭氧层从红外波段卫星图像

Maps of isarithms and of the total ozone content surface were plotted using data from the HIRS radiometer carried on board the NOAA-12 satellite. An optimal kriging procedure was used in scaling from an irregular to a regular grid. Satellite and surface data were compared for Krasnoyarsk, and the influence of large forest fires on surface data is noted. The minimum ozone content of 287 D.u. according to satellite data was observed on 14 August in southwestern Siberia.

This article is devoted to the problem of developing a glaciological geographic information system. MAPPING THE THICKNESS OF ARCTIC SEA ICE FROM INFRARED SATELLITE IMAGERY 利用红外卫星图像绘制北极海冰厚度图

A theoretical model of the correlation between (1) the three-dimensional surface representing the variation in temperature of the sea ice cover and (2) the surface representing the variation in ice thickness is presented. This model is used to develop a method for automated determination and mapping of the thickness of sea ice based on relative temperature measurements on IR satellite images. Comparisons of the results are made with data obtained from synchronous measurements of ice thickness from icebreakers and at onshore meteorological stations.

The first results of an experimental terrain study of arid volcanic regions using radar imagery in the S band by a synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) on board the Almaz-I satellite are presented. A reference plot, for which precise topographic and geological data were available, was selected to assess the possibility of using SAR imagery for this purpose. These data were used to test the geometric and radiometric reliability of imagery recorded by a spaceborne SAR. The modeling of an SAR image of the reference plot and its comparison with a real image made it possible to develop a method for assessing the physical parameters of the underlying surface using data from an SAR operating in the S range.

An experimental study was made of the indices of refraction and absorption of sand and bentonite in the decimeter wavelength range as a function of water content and temperature. The influence of salinity on the behavior of their dielectric properties at negative temperatures and upon a transition through 0°C was studied. The results indicated that it is possible to carry out radiometric remote sensing of soil salinity during the winter.

The results of a joint analysis of data recorded quasisynchronously in the Gulf Stream frontal zone by a radar with a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) carried aboard the Almaz-I spacecraft and the Akademik Vernadskiy research ship (contact measurements) are presented. It is shown that the dark linear structures visible on SAR images are radar images of zones of current convergence, in which surfactants are accumulated, suppressing cm-length ripples. In the case of wave propagation in the same direction as the current, the effects of refraction and reflection of surface waves, leading to the formation of regions of concentration of waves at the current boundaries and in the wave “shadow” region, are detected and investigated.

The possibility of simultaneous measurement of wind speed, temperature, and concentration of H2O molecules within the mesopause during its active sensing at submillimeter wavelengths using two satellites is verified. Expressions are derived that in explicit form relate the characteristics of the medium to the optical depths of the sensing path at the harmonic frequencies of an amplitude-modulated signal, whose carrier frequency coincides with the center of the water vapor resonance line.

The potential utility of the Harrington “desirability” function is examined in the assessment of changes in soil humus content using spectrophotometric data. The influence of external factors, such as sun angle, soil moisture content, and degree of soil cultivation, on spectral brightness coefficients is analyzed. The applicability of this method when there is only a small volume of experimental data is noted.
