A comparative analysis is made of materials from four groups of researchers—Russian, British, Norwegian, and Finnish—who have used space imagery to study industrial impacts on northern vegetation in the vicinity of Monchegorsk. The problems encountered by the groups included variable survey weather conditions, the strong influence of seasonal changes, differences in the physiognomy of the vegetation, and the inapplicability of impact indicators used in one region to another.

Using the city of Irkutsk, East Siberia, Russia as an example, the authors outline a program for assessing the health effects of urban pollution. More specifically, the purpose of the research was to establish a correlation between the distribution of overall pollution, determined from remote sensing data, and the health of the population, determined from ground-based investigation of various indicators of public health in different sectors of the city. A “pollution/sickness” regression coefficient is calculated that shows by how much the incidence of disease increased in various areas of the city as a result of an increase in pollution of a given magnitude. Translated by Edward Torrey, Alexandria, Virginia, from: Geografiya i prirodnyye resursy, 1999, No. 1, pp. 115-122.

Cartographic approaches to studying the spatial distribution of the biological efficiency of Moldova's climate are presented and investigated. In particular, a Climate Biological Efficiency Index (CBEI) was calculated from data gathered from 17 meteorological stations in the republic for the period 1961–1992. The CBEI for this period is compared with one characterizing a “normal” climate (up to 1980) and the period of “global warming” (after 1980) to determine the extent to which recent trends have altered the republic's climate in terms of its suitability for agriculture. Translated by Edward Torrey, Alexandria, Virginia from: Izvestiya Akademii Nauk, seriya geograficheskaya, 1999, No 3, pp. 86-92.

Algorithms are written for discriminating shorelines on satellite images using halftone (edge) and boundary (contour)-point information, this being the first stage in the process of identifying lakes, rivers, etc. Areas of distinctive morphometry are first discriminated on the image and this image is then broken down into regions corresponding to the features present on the image. The physical information present on satellite images also is used to select the initial points used in the performance of such a procedure.

The author explores general issues in the mapping of environmental parameters and land uses in cities, before describing in detail a project for compiling a map of landscapes of the water management zones of rivers and water bodies of Minsk, Belarus at a scale of 1:10,000. The paper discusses how several methodological problems were addressed, including the selection of taxonomic categories for mapping and generalization of landscape-unit boundaries at different scales. Translated by Edward Torrey, Alexandria, Virginia from: Geografiya i prirodnyye resursy, 1999, No. 2, pp. 127-131.

The author outlines a method for detecting change in mountain-basin geosystems based on identification of graphic images. The determination and interpretation of the quantitative indices of morphological elements of mountain basins makes it possible to define basic trends in the development of slope drainage basins. The potential of utilizing a basin approach to analysis of the resistance of various soil/ground materials to endogenous-exogenous processes is analyzed. Translated by Edward Torrey, Alexandria, Virginia from: Izvestiya Akademii Nauk, seriya geograficheskaya, 1999, No. 2, pp. 91-98.

An international team of cartographers describes the initial concept and methodological principles underlying an IGU-sponsored project to compile a map of the state of the world's environments on the basis of a unified approach and guidelines. The project, which is to involve cartographers and Earth scientists throughout the world, is to provide a comprehensive characterization of the condition of marine and terrestrial ecosystems at a scale of 1:15,000,000 and is to be made available in both digital and paper formats. Translated by Edward Torrey, Alexandria, VA from: Izvestiya Akademii Nauk, seriya geograficheskaya, 1999, No. 1, pp. 108-113.

A Russian geographer summarizes the results of a comprehensive study of modern landscapes and the mapping of diverse ecological situations. The procedure involves the development of a system of criteria and indices for the assessment of the properties of the environment, which provide a sound basis for comprehensive ecological mapping. The importance of an ecological assessment in the mapping of environmental problems and situations in support of the stable and balanced development of regions is demonstrated.
