Introduction. The aim of the study was to analyze the tibial tunnel position after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Material and Methods. The study included 830 patients who underwent this operative procedure. There were four times more male than female patients. The tibial tunnel placement was analyzed on frontal and lateral radiograph images of the knee joint. Results. The average frontal tibial index was 55% (35 - 68%), the average frontal tibial angle was 75 degrees (58 - 90), the sagittal tibial index was 30% (15 - 52%) and the sagittal tibial angle was 68 degrees (50 - 89). Conclusion. A significant deviation from these values may potentially lead to failure of the anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Introduction. The growing population of the elderly people and a proportional increase in the number of the elderly with different types of disabilities, necessitates a multidisciplinary approach to the assessment of their oral health and dental treatment. The ultimate aim is to retain a pain-free functional dentition and decrease the risk of future disease. Material and Methods. A PubMed search was performed and the authors contributed their experience in implementing preventive and therapeutic measures. Oral health problems of the elderly with disabilities. Two main factors influence the oral health: multimorbidity and polypharmacy. Oral health problems expected in this population are teeth abrasion, teeth fractures, root caries, periodontitis and problems with wearing dentures due to stomatitis caused by Candida albicans. Oral health assessment and treatment guidelines. This article provides guidelines for assessment and treatment planning, taking into consideration multimorbidity, polypharmacy, dementia and capacity of caregivers. Preventive measures. Preventive measures are crucial for long-term oral health of this population, and this paper provides guidelines for preventive treatment depending on the degree of functional dependence. Prosthetic treatment. Although some elderly with disabilities are suitable for conventional prosthetic treatment, often there are contraindications and specific considerations that must be taken into account. Conclusion. Oral health needs of the elderly people with disabilities should not be neglected and the success of treatment depends on the education of dental professionals and cooperation with other health professionals of the medical team.

Introduction. Alexia without agraphia is an impairment of reading ability. Speech, auditory comprehension, repetition and writing are relatively intact. Due to a damage of the splenium of corpus callosum, alexia without agraphia is considered to be an interhemispheric disconnection syndrome. Case Report. We presented a 71-year-old male, with chronic hypertension, diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia. The magnetic resonance imaging showed a lesion in the left medial temporal region, including the equilateral thalamus, posterior cingulate gyrus, splenium of corpus callosum, lingual occipital gyrus, and the tail of the hippocampus. Lacunar ischemia was found on the right side of cerebellum. The neuro-linguistic diagnostic protocol included the Mini Mental State Examination, Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination, Boston Naming Test and phonemic and category fluency tests. We have also designed a clinical protocol for color recognition assessment. The results showed a mild cognitive impairment related to the time and space orientation, delayed memory and reading. On the speech and language levels, a severe acquired alexia without agraphia was registered which was not associated with other language modalities. Conclusion. The neuro-linguistic tests and clinical techniques provide a rather reliable diagnostic criteria, which is the basis for neuro-rehabilitation. The rehabilitation protocol refers to training techniques: tactile-kinesthetic recognition of graphemes and application of various reading techniques, such as letter-by-letter reading, Multiple Oral Re-reading, melodic intonation therapy and oral reading technique in order to facilitate rehabilitation of reading.

Introduction. Malignant melanoma accounts for 3% of all cancers in Europe. Malignant melanoma of the genitourinary tract is very rare, accounting for 1% of all cases. In addition, primary malignant melanoma of the urethra accounts for 0.2% of all melanomas and 4% of all urethral cancers. The abnormal migration of melanocytes during the embryonic development may explain their occurrence in the urethra. Also, vulva contains a relatively high concentration of melanocytes, so it may be the reason for higher incidence of malignant melanomas in females than in males, especially located at the meatus or in the distal urethra. Case Report. A 60-year-old woman presented with a solid tumor protruding through the vaginal introitus. Computerized tomography revealed a 5 cm large tumor of the urethra, infiltrating the bladder neck and the anterior vaginal wall. In addition, a bilateral pelvic lymphadenopathy was observed. The patient underwent anterior pelvic exenteration with urethrectomy, bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy and bilateral ureterocutaneostomy, followed by immunochemotherapy. Nonetheless, the patient died 10 months after the surgery. Conclusion. Urethral melanoma is a tumor with a very poor prognosis and high recurrence rate (71%), even after wide surgical resection, adjuvant radiotherapy, chemo and immunotherapy.

Introduction. Smoking is the leading preventable cause of mortality in the world. The World Health Organization estimates that annually more than seven million lives are lost worldwide due to smoking-related diseases. The aim of the study was to examine lifetime use of tobacco and electronic cigarettes, using patterns in the last 30 days, and to determine cigarette availability among the first grade high school students in Novi Sad. Material and Methods. The cross-sectional study was conducted among the first grade public high school students in Novi Sad. The study sample included 1.067 participants (587 girls and 480 boys), born in 2002. The survey used the questionnaire of the European School Project on Alcohol and other Drugs. Results. Of the examined sample, a total of 40.1% of high school students in Novi Sad have at least tried smoking cigarettes during their lifetime, girls significantly more often (p=0.001). With no gender difference, 20% of students smoked at least one cigarette in the month preceding the survey. Every seventh student (13.9%) tried their first cigarette at the age of 13 or younger, girls significantly more often (p=0.001). A little less than one fifth of the examinees (18.4%) tried electronic cigarettes. In the month preceding the survey, every twelfth examinee used electronic cigarettes (8.1%). Conclusion. Monitoring the prevalence of tobacco use in young people, especially new tobacco products, indicates the need for continuous and intensive activities in the field of health promotion with implementation of effective tobacco control measures.

Introduction. Several studies have reported reduction in the serum concentration of systemic inflammatory markers upon completion of periodontal therapy. However, no studies have been conducted on the effects of periodontal therapy on systemic inflammation in human immunodeficiency virus-positive patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of periodontal therapy on the serum levels of systemic inflammatory biomarkers and CD4T-lymphocyte cell count in human immunodeficiency virus-positive patients. Material and Methods. The study included 34 human immunodeficiency viruspositive patients with chronic periodontitis receiving antiretroviral therapy. Periodontal parameters (plaque index, gingival index, papilla bleeding index, probing depth and clinical attachment level) and serum samples, assessed for the levels of interleukin-1 β, tumor necrosis factor-α, and C-reactive protein, were evaluated at baseline, 1- and 3-months upon completion of the non-surgical periodontal therapy. The CD4T-lymphocyte count was measured at baseline and three months after treatment completion. Results. Significant reduction in the values of plaque index, gingival index, papilla bleeding index, and probing depth was noted (p < 0.001), whereas the reduction in the median clinical attachment level value did not reach a statistically significant level (F = 1.321; p = 0.261). Local inflammation reduction was accompanied by a significant decrease in serum C-reactive protein (F = 5.765; p = 0.014) and a CD4Tlymphocyte count increase (t = 2.321; p = 0.027). Serum interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor-α did not change significantly as a result of periodontal treatment. Conclusion. Periodontal therapy contributes to the reduction of C-reactive protein and improvement of general health in human immunodeficiency virus-positive patients receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy.

Introduction. Horehound (Marrubium vulgare, Lamiaceae) is a widely used plant in traditional medicine used for prevention and treatment of various diseases. High content of phenolic compounds makes it a significant source of natural antioxidants. The aim of this research was to examine in vitro antioxidant properties and anticholinesterase activity of horehound water-alcoholic extract, followed by preliminary chemical characterization of horehound. Material and Methods. The in vitro antioxidant potentials of horehound water-alcoholic extract were assessed using several antioxidant test-systems (neutralization of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, hydroxyl, and nitroso radical, determination of ferric reducing potential, as well as inhibition of lipid peroxidation). Preliminary chemical profiling of the extract included estimation of total phenolic and flavonoid contents, while anticholinesterase potential of the examined extract was evaluated by spectrophotometry. Results. The amounts of total phenolics and total flavonoids in the obtained extract were 59.87 ± 7.31 mg gallic acid equivalents/g of dry extract and 14.47 ± 0.54 mg quercetin equivalents/g of dry extract respectively. Furthermore, significant antioxidant potential was noticed in the ferric reducing potential assay (64.07 ± 2.68 mg ascorbic acid equivalents/g of dry extract), while concentrations needed for neutralization of 50% (IC50) of generated 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, nitroso and hydroxyl were 13.41 μg/mL, 64.86 μg/mL and 63.99 μg/mL, respectively. The potential of the extract to inhibit lipid peroxidation process was modest (IC50 = 823.82 μg/mL), while in the case of anticholinesterase potential, the recorded IC50 value was 2821.15 μg/mL. Conclusion. Horehound represents a significant natural antioxidant, mostly as a result of high levels of phenolic compounds. In addition, the examined ethanol extract has a certain anticholinesterase activity.

Introduction. The aim of this study was to investigate the appearance of the trochlear groove in infants and to present the possible causes for the development of trochlear dysplasia as one of the most severe pathologic findings in patients with patellar instability. Material and Methods. Knee ultrasonography was per-formed in 200 infants, 3 to 6 months of age. The measurements were made at 30 and 60 degrees of knee flexion, in order to measure the trochlear bone and cartilaginous sulcus angle on the patellar surface of the femur and to determine the degree of trochlear dysplasia. A 7-megahertz probe was used for measurements, which was tangentially placed with the reference to the posterior femoral joint. Results. A completely flat trochlear bony sulcus angle was registered in all infants aged 3 to 6 months. The mean cartilaginous sulcus angle was between 149 ± 5.4° and 19 infants had a sulcus angle over 159°. Eleven infants with trochlear dysplasia were in breech presentation at birth. Conclusion. Our study showed that the cartilaginous part of the trochlear groove was already well developed at birth. Breech presentation of the fetus could be a predisposing factor for dysplasia of the cartilaginous part of the trochlear groove. The bony part of the trochlear groove is dysplastic in infants and it gradually gets deeper, later getting a shape of the overlying articular cartilage. The influence of the Delpech law, with lower pressure in the trochlear groove, could be the possible mechanical theory explaining the development of the trochlear dysplasia in the later stage of the childhood.

Introduction. Groove for the vertebral artery and the suboccipital nerve, is located on the superior surface of the posterior arch of the first cervical vertebra (the atlas). Presence of bony variations may transform the groove into incomplete/complete canal, causing compression of its structures and consequently symptoms of vertebro-basilar insufficiency. The aim of the present study was to determine the incidence and extent of morphological variations of the posterior arch of the atlas vertebra. Material and Methods. The investigation was conducted on 41 atlas vertebrae, part of the Osteological Collection of the Department of Anatomy of the Faculty of Medicine in Novi Sad and the Faculty of Medicine in Nis. According to the shape of the posterior arch, the atlas vertebrae were classified into three classes. The measurements of maximum width and height diameters of the incomplete/complete canal for the vertebral artery were performed. All the measurements were done using open source software for image analysis, Image J. Results. The results of the study showed that in our sample of atlases the most common class was class I (78.05%), and class III the least frequent (7.32%). There was no statistically significant difference in the observed measurements of the atlas anatomical variations between the right and left side. Conclusion. Morphometric analysis of the superior surface of the posterior arch of the atlas vertebra has shown the existence of variations and their importance has been discussed.

Introduction. Chronic otitis media is defined as a persistent inflammation of the middle ear with signs of an infection lasting for three months or longer. Chronic otitis media may occur either with or without cholesteatoma. For both types of conditions, surgical treatment with closed canal wall-up or open canal wall-down techniques of tympanoplasty are considered. Our aim was to evaluate functional outcomes in two groups of patients (chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma and chronic otitis media without cholesteatoma) treated with various tympanoplasty techniques. Material and Methods. This retrospective study included 100 patients who underwent canal wall-down and canal wall-up tympanoplasty for the treatment of chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma and chronic otitis media without cholesteatoma from 2015 to 2016. All study patients underwent routine clinical and audiometric examinations. The study evaluated preoperative and postoperative functional results (evaluation of pure-tone audiogram screening). Results. A statistically significant lower incidence (p < 0.05) of postoperative air-bone gap < 20 decibels was established in patients with chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma, but there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups. There was a statistically lower incidence (p < 0.05) of patients with postoperative pure tone audiometry < 40 decibels in patients with chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma, but the difference between the two groups was not statistically significant. When analyzing the mean postoperative pure tone audiometry and air-bone gap in the study patients, canal wall-up tympanoplasty was found to be statistically more effective (p < 0.05). Conclusion. Various pathomorphological and pathophysiological changes in the middle ear, presence of extensively different forms of cholesteatomas, the choice of surgical procedures and poor preoperative hearing are in direct correlation with postoperative hearing.
