In Kenya there are an increasing number of applied theatre and peacebuilding projects taking place. Currently, the perspectives and experiences of those undertaking this work, on the ground, are not adequately re fl ected in academic discourse or in the processes of setting up projects or establishing modes of support and collaboration. In this article we address this by outlining fi ndings from a series of two-day workshops with theatre practitioners. In doing so, we map the challenges practitioners face, the skills and knowledges they feel they already have, those they lack, and the future support and opportunities they would value.

ABSTRACT This article considers the value of growing up stories among theatre practitioners in Singapore as a resource for learning theatre in multicultural contexts. It engages with the lived experiences of five Singapore theatre practitioners, Alfian Sa’at, Alvin Tan, Haresh Sharma, Kok Heng Leun and Ong Keng Sen, whose contributions to discourses on multiplicity and performance are significant in the city–state and internationally. Concepts of ‘Open Culture’ (Kuo. 1998. “Contemplating an Open Culture: Transcending Multiracialism.” In Singapore: Re-Engineering Success, edited by Arun Mahiznan, and Lee Tsao Yuan, 55–60. Singapore: Oxford University Press), ‘postcolonial conviviality’ (Gilroy. 2005. Postcolonial Melancholia. New York: Columbia University Press) and ‘critical multiculturalism’ (Goh. 2009. “Conclusion: Toward a Critical Multiculturalism.” In Race and Multiculturalism in Malaysia and Singapore, edited by Daniel P.S. Goh, 213–218. London: Routledge) are proposed as useful frames for understanding theatre in multicultural contexts, and from which the idea of a ‘bricoleur imagination’ is derived.

Spaces for ambiguities: playing with hair in community theatre for teenage girls

ABSTRACT This article concerns how the normative matter of body hair is playfully encountered within a theatre practice for teenage girls. By working with Deleuzian-inspired theories, playfulness is understood as embodied doings, interwoven with the local context. The article explores how playfulness is enacted in relation to the everyday, in particular body hair removal. The analysis shows how playfulness is an ambiguous feature enacted together with bodies, affects and materialities. Moreover, playfulness became both a restricting and a transformative force reproducing the already known while also opening up a critical approach of playing with the violent aspects of hair removal.

Humour, drama education, and drama curriculum in Ireland
Pub Date : 2023-03-22 DOI: 10.1080/13569783.2023.2190014

ABSTRACT Humour is discussed in this article in relation to drama education in Ireland. Humour is identified as a potentially important feature of children’s engagement in drama, and this is explained by an exploration of humour theory. Examples of how humour positively affects the experience of drama participation are also considered. The discussion is in the context of drama curriculum review in the Republic of Ireland and the article identifies an over emphasis on teacher-centric, talk based conventions which has emerged in practice. A more artistic experience which enables children to communicate naturally, and thus humorously, is proposed.

Participatory drama: bridging cultural understanding and Tang poetry teaching

ABSTRACT This article adopts Geertz's view of cultural analysis and embodiment theory, creating a theoretical lens to explore how participatory drama can support students in their understanding of the culture connoted in Tang poetry – a significant cultural heritage of China. A case study was conducted on fourth-grade (10–11 years old) primary school students in Shanghai. The findings show that participatory drama can help students perceive poetic images with their physical senses, awaken the cultural experience connoted by the body to locate meaning, and reflect on the poet's spiritual world through their bodily experience.

Navigating the tension between openness and quality artistic encounters in intermedial experience: a teaching artist’s account
Pub Date : 2023-02-16 DOI: 10.1080/13569783.2023.2176215

ABSTRACT In this article, a teaching artist shares their understandings about designing a large-scale interactive intermedial arts experience for children aged five to eight years, and articulates findings about the conditions that promote quality experiences of this kind. When designing interactive arts experiences, a tension exists between providing openness and structure that derives from motivations to inspire creativity, but this does not need to be the case. Fears of constricting and stifling participants’ creativity are voiced frequently. Enabling constraints are presented here as a method of promoting openness, creativity, and acts of imagination in interactive arts experiences.
