Examples of zygotene chromosomal configurations in Allium senescens subsp. montanum are presented. Bivalents do not dominate in a zygotene stadium. Some bivalent segments show deletions. Also, tri- and tetravalents segments are observed. The conjugation of SAT-chromosome shows that a translocation has occurred in the SAT segment. In addition, univalents indicate that meiotic behaviour of the species is unstable.

Inter- and intra-antipodal variation is presented for a free-nucleolar developmental stadium in the Avena sativa endosperm. Antipodals of common oat are uni- or multinuclear. Multinuclear antipodals, in a single cell, show nuclei of the same mitotic stage, but this is different for various antipodals. Examples of DNA amplification and anomalies occurring during mitosis are provided.

Composite starch granules, the main product of assimilation in oat endosperm, were analyzed in the accessions of both wild and cultivated diploid species of the genus Avena. Simple starch granules are mostly synthesized in the outer parts of the endosperm tissue. The size of sub-grains in a composite granule does not depend on a wild or cultivated status of the species. Inter-specific variation in the size differences of composite granules is large. Also, a broad variation has been detected for granules analyzed in a Lugol’s solution or polarizing light. This analysis revealed a difference between the synthesis of amylopectin versus amylose in a granule. Examples of occurrences of low levels of amylopectin synthesis are provided.

The growth of winter wheat ear was studied under optimal and deficit support of main mineral nutrition elements – nitrogen, phosphor and potassium. It is shown that mineral nutrition deficit caused the completing of ear growth prematurely and reduced ear length in cultivars ‘Mironіvska 808’ and ‘Favoritka’. Nutrition deficit decreased ear mass of main and side stem, mass of big and middle grains, grain mass in ear. It is detected reducing of lower spikelets in wheat cultivars ‘Mironіvska 808’ and ‘Favoritka’ under nutrition deficit that caused decreasing quantity of spikelets and grains in ear. Period of ear growth in both investigated cultivars was equal in optimal conditions that was determined by the same duration of ontogenesis phasis. Deficit of mineral nutrition accelerated the plant germination but decreased the grain fullness in cultivar ‘Mironіvska 808’. Mature grains in cultivar ‘Favoritka’ were fulfilled even under mineral nutrition deficit conditions.

Teucrium pruinosum var. aksarayense M. Dinc & S. DoAÂu (Lamiaceae), a new variety from Aksaray in Central Anatolia, is described and illustrated. The new variety is similar to the typical one in its calyx teeth uncinate at tip and subequal to the tube with conspicious midvein. It is readily distinguished from var. pruinosum by its general appearance, indumentum, and floral organ pigmentation. The map showing the distributions of the varieties was given.

The results of electron-cytochemical study of the localization of Mg2+-activated ÐÂ+-ÐÂТPase in Zea mays cortex cells of distal elongation zone (DEZ) of roots of 21-days old plants (cv. ‘Perejaslavsky’ and cv. ‘Dostatok’) grown under different soil moisture (70% and 20%) are presented. The participation of H+-ATPase in processes of maize adaptation to the conditions of reduced soil moisture was confirmed by electron-cytochemical method. The redistribution of H+-ATPase activity location in the cell membranes of DEZ cells of roots are revealed under influence of lowered soil humidity (to 20%). We proposed that the detected differences in reducing of products area of cytochemical reaction on plasma membrane and increasing of their area on tonoplast of vacuoles in the cells of DEZ of roots under conditions of drought obviously enhance turgor cells for optimize their growth and optimal physiological state and also for plant adaptation to reduce moisture in the soil.

The surface ultrastructure of seeds coat of the subgenus Xyridion of the genus Iris L. from Ukrainian flora was examined. The studied seeds are characterized by both common and distinct features. The common features are: the shape and position of hilum (roundish, small, by position – basal); the shape and limits of cells of the test (polygonal, their boundaries are almost not visible); the character of thickening and tortuosity degree of anticlinal cell walls (uniformly thickened, straight). These features, as we suggest, could be additional diagnostic at the genera level. The distinct characteristics are: the type of cuticle; the type of seeds shape, the shape and the size of seeds. We suppose these characteristics as additional diagnostic at the species level. The seeds ultrastructure of I. pontica and I. sintenisii subsp. brandzae has been studied for the first time.

Peculiarities of growth, evolution and morphology of Serratula coronata L. were determined under introduction in conditions of Botanical Garden of Zhytomyr National Agroecological University that belongs to Polissya region of Ukraine. The results of investigation of S. coronata ex situ are presented for the next periods of ontogenesis: latent, pregenerative and partly generative. The features of the 6 age states of individuals are specified: achen dormant, sprouts, juvenile, immature, young generative, middle-aged generative. During the first year of life the seeds of S. coronata were passing the pregenerative period of ontogenesis. In the second year the plants got into generative period achieving middle-aged generative state in the third year of growth. Plants of S. coronata formed vegetative and generative organs, as well as viable seeds and that confirms sufficient species adaptation in conditions of the described region.

The taxonomic status of Holostemma R.Br (Apocynaceae (formerly Asclepiadaceae), Asclepiadoideae) has recently (2014) been revised, allowing for biotechnology on this genus to assume a new and focused direction. This mini-review aims to cover what is known thus far about the tissue culture of Holostemma species, which includes medicinal species with ornamental potential. A post-publication peer review of the literature is provided, a critical assessment is made of the faults and weaknesses of the literature, and advice is offered as to how better to improve the research objectives to benefit researchers of Holostemma species.
